Community Radio Poised for a Big Comeback as Activists Free the Airwaves

"After a decade-long grassroots campaign waged by community radio advocates, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is preparing to make room on the airwaves for hundreds of new low-power stations across the country. Avila said the opportunity comes at a crucial time. His community has suffered while living under the watch of rogue Sheriff Joe Arpaio and dealing with the harsh realities of tough anti-immigrant laws recently passed in Arizona."

Whistleblower: The NSA is Lying-U.S. Government Has Copies of Most of Your Emails

National Security Agency whistleblower William Binney reveals he believes domestic surveillance has become more expansive under President Obama than President George W. Bush. He estimates the NSA has assembled 20 trillion "transactions" - phone calls, emails and other forms of data - from Americans. This likely includes copies of almost all of the emails sent and received from most people living in the United States. Binney talks about Section 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act and challenges NSA Director Keith Alexander's assertion that the NSA is not intercepting information about U.S. citizens. Watch/Listen/Read

Tavis Smiley & Cornel West on The Rich and the Rest of Us: A Poverty Manifesto

The latest census data shows nearly one in two Americans, or 150 million people, have fallen into poverty - or could be classified as low income. We're joined by Dr. Cornel West and Tavis Smiley, who continue their efforts to spark a national dialog on the poverty crisis with the new book, The Rich and the Rest of Us: A Poverty Manifesto. Collin County Gay and Lesbian Alliance Participates in Municipal Elections

COLLIN COUNTY, TEXAS - The Collin County Gay & Lesbian Alliance (CCGLA) has sent an online survey to City Council and School Board candidates in Allen and Frisco. (Plano and McKinney will not be holding Municipal elections this year.)

"Our membership has come to rely on our Voters' Guide and Meet and Greet events to be informed about those who would represent us at the local level. These representatives have more impact on our daily lives than elected officials in Austin or Washington," said CCGLA President Bob Shimmin.

Political Chair Sandy Jacobs added, "The cities of Dallas and Ft Worth have ordinances that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and in Austin lawmakers passed legislation that would protect all students against bullying and harassment. We need to elect officials who will advocate for us in Collin County."

CCGLA has been sending Candidate Questionnaires for a number of years. Results of the survey will be posted on the CCGLA website. The purpose of the Meet & Greets is to allow the LGBT community and other fair-minded voters to meet the candidates and discuss issues that are not typically addressed in other forums. The events are informal, non-partisan, and all candidates are invited. Citizens are encouraged to eat, drink and mingle which gives everyone time to get to know the candidates.

The Frisco Meet & Greet will be held on Friday April 27, 6:30-8:30 at a private residence. Details and rsvp at www.ccgla.org.

Truth Or Consequences (Texas Monthly)

Eight years ago, Dan Rather broadcast an explosive report on the Air National Guard service of President George W. Bush. It was supposed to be the legendary newsman's finest hour. Instead, it blew up in his face, tarnishing his career forever and casting a dark cloud of doubt and suspicion over his reporting -- and that of every other journalist on the case. The Atlantic Wire The former CBS News anchor is "optimistic that somebody, somewhere will one day come forward and reveal the truth" about the so-called Killian documents, which were used to underpin his 2004 story claiming that Bush received special treatment to avoid the Vietnam draft and dodged his responsibilities.

The Lone Ranger was a masked man who was out to bring bad guys to justice. Ed Conard is a masked man who is out to bring bad guys to power.

A multimillionaire financier who was a top henchman in Bain Capital, Mitt Romney's old outfit of corporate plunderers, Conard is currently riding with the small but fearsome Citizens United Gang, which has taken over presidential politics in our country.

Unlike the James Gang, the Dalton Boys and other robbers of yore who stole from banks and railroads, these thieves are bankers and high-rolling railroaders. Thanks to the Supreme Court's edict in the infamous Citizens United case, they are now able to use unlimited amounts of their corporate wealth to create Super PACs, which are proving to be devastating weapons against democracy.

The Gavin Newsom Show: California Lieutenant Governor Scores Current TV Gig

It's no secret that California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom been more than a little restless in the role of California's number two executive.

Despite a high-profile focus on promoting job growth in the state, taking a strong stand against UC tuition hikes and calling out government officials who spend their free time killing mountain lions, the ever-ambitious Newsom has seemed stifled by the relatively limited powers and profile of his office.

Sugar Daddies: The old, white, rich men who are buying this election.

   By Frank Rich

If you want to appreciate what Barack Obama is up against in 2012, forget about the front man who is his nominal opponent and look instead at the Republican billionaires buying the ammunition for the battles ahead. A representative example is Harold Simmons, an 80-year-old Texan who dumped some $15 million into the campaign before primary season had ended. Reminiscing about 2008, when he bankrolled an ad blitz to tar the Democrats with the former radical Bill Ayers, Simmons told The Wall Street Journal, "If we had run more ads, we could have killed Obama." It is not a mistake he intends to make a second time. The $15 million Simmons had spent by late February dwarfs the $2.8 million he allotted to the Ayers takedown and the $3 million he contributed to the Swift Boat Veterans demolition of John Kerry four years before that. Imagine the cash that will flow now that the GOP sideshows are over and the president is firmly in Simmons's crosshairs.
