A British Spring? Phone-Hacking Scandal Threatens Murdoch Media Empire and British Government

British Prime Minister David Cameron has announced plans to hold an emergency session of Parliament on Wednesday to discuss the growing phone-hacking scandal that has threatened Rupert Murdoch's media empire and rocked the British government. On Sunday, British detectives arrested Rebekah Brooks, the former head of Murdoch's British newspaper arm, on suspicion of intercepting communications and corruption. Hours later, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Paul Stephenson resigned following criticism of the handling by police of the phone hacking scandal. We speak to Ian Katz, deputy editor of The Guardian, the British newspaper that has broken many of the Murdoch stories, and Sarah Smith, correspondent for Channel 4 News U.K., based in Washington, D.C. Texas Oil Gas Accountability Project

Leslie says ...I just joined the Texas Oil Gas Accountability Project's mailing list. I hope you will too.Once you do, you'll receive about 4 emails a month letting you know when and how you can make your voice heard with the state and local government, and industry officials, that decide how responsibly the drilling industry will operate in Texas.Texas OGAP is comprised of local citizens like you whose goal is to bring about needed oil and gas policy reforms in Texas on the state and local level.

With the new boom in shale gas drilling, Texas has a great opportunity to learn from the mistakes of past development. Unfortunately, without organized citizen action, the oil and gas industry is now running roughshod over the rights of landowners, our communities, natural resources and wildlife, and public health.
Cick the link below to join the Texas OGAP mailing list. Together our voices will speak louder.

Dallas Area Christian Progressive : An Open Letter to Gov. Rick Perry

An Open Letter to Gov. Rick Perry: August 6, "Go A New Way"

Dear Governor Rick Perry:

You have called for August 6 to be a day of gathering "in humility and repentance." The Dallas Area Christian Progressive Alliance joins this call for repentance, a word which means to "go a new way." We call for repentance when we consider the condition of our state, the mandate from God to love our neighbors, and the vision of the future that is the answer to our prayers. We embrace government as one way to follow God's will on earth as it is in heaven. Jesus called the NATIONS to judgment. The prophets he came to fulfill-Amos, Jeremiah, Isaiah in particular-condemned the governments of their day, the kings, for not serving the poor and the oppressed.

Jesus says that the nations who care for the sick are "blessed," while those who do not he says are "accursed" (Matthew 25:31-45) Texas is first among all states in the percentage of citizens who are uninsured, and ranks number 41 in health services. Let us go a new way toward health care and health security and turn from the road that leads to the fate of the accursed.

Greed, Excess and America's Gaping Class Divide

by Matt Taibbi

Courtesy of good friend and Supreme Court of Assholedom justice David Sirota comes this revolting list of Marie Antoinettoid moments from recent years, in an article called "

The New 'Let Them Eat Cake!

Some of the moments on the list are easily recalled - Berkshire Hathaway gazillionaire Charlie Munger's famous "suck it up and cope" quote, coming from a guy whose company was heavily invested in bailed-out banks, was an obvious inclusion - but others are quite shocking.

Texas spending keeps rising under Perry

Texas spending kept rising for years with Perry as governor

Gov. Rick Perry's political stock has soared in recent months as he has traveled the country touting a decade of fiscal restraint in Texas under his leadership. Yet before the budget he signed last month, the Texas budget had consistently grown during Perry's time as governor, with total spending rising faster than inflation and population growth, state data show.

Critics savage Palin film as audiences stay away in droves except in Grapevine !

By David Ferguson

Sunday, July 17th, 2011 -- 1:22 pm

"The Undefeated", a documentary about former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin opened in some theaters across the country this weekend and, if critics

are to be believed, it is truly awful. Politico has a round-up of

reviews, many of which feature the word "bombast" and include sentiments

like this one, expressed by Time magazine's Richard Corliss, "The movie may tempt even the most ardent conservatives to emulate their idol's  tenure as governor and walk out halfway through."

The Atlantic's Conor Friedersdorf caught the Steve Bannon-directed biopic in a deserted theater in solidly Republican Orange County, California. A pair of young women from out of town wandered into the viewing but didn't know that the film was about Sarah Palin when Friedersdorf asked. An usher demanded to know why he wasn't seeing the new "Harry Potter" movie.

"ARC Entertainment Announces Strong Opening for 'The Undefeated,' with multiple sold-out runs and vocal audience support -- Approximately $5,000 per screen through Saturday night ... [T]he film about Gov. Sarah Palin's rise from obscurity to national prominence ... was marketed almost entirely through social media and grass roots efforts, with virtually no traditional media spend. With the strong initial showing, the film is going to a wider release footprint later this month, with details being announced soon.
