Bill White : Host a debate watch party October 19th

From Bill White : Host a debate watch party

On Tuesday, October 19th, Bill White will be participating in a debate in Austin with Libertarian Party candidate Kathie Glass and Green Party candidate Deb Shafto. Rick Perry, continuing his practice of avoiding accountability, has refused to attend. With only 17 days left until Election Day and early voting starting this Monday, the debate provides a great opportunity to continue to build momentum through November 2nd.
We would like to encourage all of our supporters to host debate watch parties and make calls with our online call tool. Invite you friends and family over to see for themselves the leadership Bill White will bring to Texas.
Click here to host a debate party and make online calls for Bill White. Let Texans know that there is a candidate who is in it for Texas. We will also be hosting debate watch parties at our 19 regional volunteer offices. To find an office near you, click here.

Exclusive: British Novelist John le Carré on the Iraq War, Corporate Power, the Exploitation of Africa and His New Novel, "Our Kind of Traitor"

Today, we spend the hour, in a national broadcast exclusive, with world-renowned British novelist John le Carré, the pen name of David Cornwell. Le Carré's writing career spans half a century, during which he has established himself as a master spy writer. His latest novel, his twenty-second, is out this week, entitled Our Kind of Traitor. David Cornwell worked in the British Secret Services from the late 1950s until the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War. His third novel, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, became an international bestseller. As the Cold War ended, le Carré continued to write prolifically, shifting focus to the inequities of globalization, unchecked multinational corporate power, and the role national spy services play in protecting corporate interests. "The things that are done in the name of the shareholder are, to me, as terrifying as the things that are done-dare I say it-in the name of God," le Carré tells Democracy Now! Perhaps best known among his many post-Cold War novels is The Constant Gardener, depicting a pharmaceutical company's exploitation of unwitting Kenyans for dangerous, sometimes fatal, drug tests. In this rare US interview le Carre also discusses Tony Blair's role in the Iraq war, US policy toward Iran, and international money laundering.

Environmental Groups Confront Oil Industry-Backed Attempt to Repeal California's Landmark Emissions Law in Prop 23

We turn to Proposition 23, a ballot initiative that would effectively repeal California's landmark global warming emissions law. Two Texas oil companies with refineries in California, the Valero and Tesoro corporations, launched a campaign to suspend implementation of the law until state unemployment falls to 5.5 percent for at least one year. We speak to the leaders of two environmental organizations opposed to Proposition 23: Michael Brune of Sierra Club and Rebecca Tarbotton of Rainforest Action Network.

THE PEOPLE'S RESPONSE to the George W. Bush Library & Policy Institute November 16th !

A peaceful, nonviolent march and rally will coincide with and protest the George W. Bush Presidential Center groundbreaking in Dallas on November 16, 2010.   Join us for a series of events that will move us toward accountability for the past and democracy for the future!

Accountability is the hallmark of a mature democracy:  no one is above the law!  Remind past, present and future administrations that the truth cannot  be buried or changed, and warn the public that the same ideologues who crafted the Bush policies of the last decade will be writing a script for our future.  Will this think-tank develop the same kinds of policies that brought us pre-emptive war, economic crisis, environmental disaster, unprecedented presidential power, and diminished civil and human rights? Act now!  History is already repeating itself!
Events are planned in Dallas for November 14 -17, 2010, with the march and rally on the 16th. Join us!
Speakers will include: Col. Ann Wright, Dr. Robert Jensen, Ray McGovern, Rev. Dr. William McElvaney, Hadi Jawad, Representative Lon Burnam,  Diane Wilson, Marjorie Cohn, Kathy Kelly, David Swanson, and Medea Benjamin.

'538 Ways to Live, Work and Play Like a Liberal' by Justin Krebs co- founder of Drinking Liberally here in North Texas Friday, October 22th

Subject: "538 Ways to Live, Work and Play Like a Liberal"
538 is the number of elected officials to Congress and the number of ideas on how to live, work and play liberally, catalogued in a new book by Justin Krebs, co-founder of the Drinking Liberally.

Krebs will be in Colleyville at Drinking Liberally Mid-Cities' October meeting, Friday, October 22 at 6:30 p.m. at Rio Mambo, to visit chapter members and discuss his new book "538 Ways to Live, Work and Play Like a Liberal".

Organized in a New York City Hell's Kitchen pub in 2003, Krebs and his friends encouraged attendees to share a drink and start a conversation - bringing democratic discourse to a local democratic space.

Covered by the BBC, national and local print and TV, and even lampooned on "The Daily Show", Drinking Liberally has spread across the country with hundreds of chapters and expanded to Reading Liberally book clubs, Screening Liberally film clubs and Eating Liberally cooking and dining clubs.

There is no cover fee for any DL meeting and attendees are encouraged to bring a friend. Rio Mambo in Colleyville is located on the service road between Hall Johnson and Glade Road, on south Hwy. 121 at 5150 Highway 121. Look for our Drinking Liberally table tents near the back.

The Drinking Liberally Mid-Cities chapter celebrated its third year in June 2010. The chapter is co-hosted by Kathleen Thompson and Brad Walker. DL Mid-Cities usually meets on the third Thursday of each month.

The Rage Won't End on Election Day
By FRANK RICH NY Times

CARL Paladino began his New York gubernatorial campaign by bragging he'd "clean out Albany with a baseball bat." When an ally likened his main Albany target, the (Jewish) leader of the State Assembly, to "an antichrist or Hitler," he enthusiastically endorsed the slur. We also learned of Paladino's repertory of gag e-mails - among them a pornographic picture of a woman having sex with a horse and a photo of an African tribal ritual captioned "Obama Inauguration Rehearsal." How blind we were not to recognize that his victory in a Republican primary under the proud Tea Party banner was inevitable.
A week ago New Yorkers were presented with a vivid reminder of how a bat can be used as a weapon. A pack of young thugs was charged with torturing three men in the Bronx for being gay, one of whom, The Times reported, was sodomized with "a small baseball bat."
It's probably safe to assume that no one in this lynching party has heard of Paladino. Presumably he has heard of them, but a man of Tea Party principles will not compromise, no matter what may be happening in the real world. Don't tread on Carl! And so last Sunday, as the city was reeling from both the Bronx bloodbath and the earlier leap of a bullied gay Rutgers freshman off the George Washington Bridge, Paladino visited a fringe Orthodox synagogue in Brooklyn to stand his ground. He attacked gays for supposedly plotting to brainwash children into accepting the validity of homosexuality.

"Coming Out" in America Must be Made Easier

by Todd Hill

Joel Burns, an openly gay city councilman in Fort Worth, took a moment in this week's council meeting to reassure young LGBTQ Texans, and Americans, that "life gets better." In so doing, Burns engaged in a profiles in courage moment by an elected politician we rarely see these days.
Burns story, an emotional and detailed walk through the "coming out" process, was in reaction to the troubling increase of teen suicides and acts of bullying against young men and women who are conflicted about their sexuality. It's a heart wrenching situation to continue to watch unfold, and, unfortunately, an all too familiar one.
My own "coming out" process mirrors Councilman Burns.  I find it fascinating that upon coming out and discovering one's individual identity, and then discovering one's community, how you're not alone anymore when the only feeling you experienced your entire life was in fact loneliness.  There are many parallels to the millions of "coming out" stories that only the LGBTQ community knows.  Our stories are the same.  The process is the same. The emotional stress is the same.  The bullying experience is the same.  The whole process is the same.  Something else is the same too-that it does get better.  We as the LGBTQ community are that safety net for the millions of other Americans, young and old, who have yet to fully experience their own individual liberation from what I can only describe as an internal personal hell. If you find it puzzling as to why anyone would take their own life as a result of such a tormenting process, I challenge you to step into the shoes of a gay friend or loved one.  I lost count by the age of 19 how many times I contemplated and attempted suicide just to relieve my own individual anguish and pain.  As God is my witness, I'm thankful that I didn't because my life only became better.
