The Texas Rally to Unite Against the War on Women

Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 4:00 pm

On the south side of the capitol building

TEXANS UNITE AGAINST THE WAR ON WOMEN

We are shocked and angered to see a radical and well-funded fringe element attempt to roll back the clock, not just a generation, but a century, to a time when family planning was considered outrageous and brave women went to jail to secure the freedom and sanctity of their own bodies.

We, the clear thinking citizens of Texas and the United States of America, believe that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness includes the following:

*The right of every person to make medical decisions independent of legislative whim.

*The right of every worker to have equal access to health insurance coverage,

regardless of an employer's personal beliefs.

*The right to family planning as a completely personal decision.

*The right for doctor patient consultations to be private.

*The right to autonomy of one's own body. Nothing is more basic.

MLK Remembered: John Nichols on Martin Luther King's Commitment to Labor Rights as Human Rights

On the 44th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., we look at his history of activism in Wisconsin, a state that has been central to the history of labor organizing, and beyond. Near the end of his life, King was helping to organize members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), which was founded in Wisconsin in 1932. King argued that labor rights were human rights and civil rights, a message that resonated in Wisconsin during last year's protests against Republican Gov. Scott Walker's effort to eliminate almost all collective bargaining rights for most public workers, as well as slash their pay and benefits. Watch/Listen/Read

We speak with former White House adviser Van Jones about what role the Occupy movement can and should play in re-electing President Obama. In Rebuild the Dream, green economy pioneer Van Jones reflects on his journey from grassroots outsider to White House insider. For the first time, he shares intimate details of his time in government - and reveals why he chose to resign his post as a special advisor to the Obama White House.

Jones puts his hard-won lessons to good use, proposing a powerful game plan to restore hope, fix our democracy and renew the American Dream.

The American Dream means different things to people, but the center of gravity is always the same: an ordinary person-who was not born with great wealth, but who is willing to work hard and play by the rules-should be able to find employment, live in a good community, make progress financially, retire with dignity, and give his or her children a better life.

"Rebuild the Dream": Ex-Obama Adviser Van Jones on Life Inside White House, Right-Wing Smear Attack

Forced out of his job as White House special adviser on green jobs by a right-wing smear campaign, Jones has just become the first former Obama official to release a book. It's called Rebuild the Dream, and its release comes on the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination. Obama appointed Jones as an adviser in 2009, but he resigned his post after he came under an attack spearheaded by then-Fox News host Glenn Beck. He writes about the experience in his new book and describes his unusual history as both a White House insider and an outside agitator for grassroots change. Watch/Listen/Read

What is a humdrum routine for millions of students around the country - riding to and from school on a yellow bus - has become a thing of the past for Aubrey. Faced with a budget shortfall, the Hutto Independent School District stopped providing bus service to him and other students who live within a two-mile walk of a campus. The move saved the district $25,000.

Woman Picking Fruit in Stock Photo Endorses Al Franken

As a political reporter, I spend most of my waking hours deleting emails from various campaigns asking for money. I know that sounds really glamorous, but after opening the nth email with an authentic-sounding subject line (a smattering, from Buzzfeed) only to find a stock-photo-laden pitch, it starts to wear on you.

That is what makes this pitch, from Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.), and featuring a stock photo of a woman picking fruit at a supermarket, stand out:

Hello, I'm Woman Picking Out Fruit In Supermarket. And I'm writing to you today on behalf of Al Franken-a Senator who stands up for real people (including those of us who make a living posing for stock photos).

Exclusive: Low ratings could end cable deal for Gore's Current TV

** please DVR and Tivo -that increases ratings !

(Reuters) - Al Gore's Current TV has bigger problems to deal with than a potential lawsuit from fired news anchor Keith Olbermann - namely not getting kicked off Time Warner Cable for low ratings.

According to three sources with knowledge of the situation, Time Warner Cable Inc's carriage agreement with Current TV stipulates that, if the left-leaning political news network fails to meet a minimum threshold for overall viewers in a given quarter, financial penalties such as Current TV being required to increase marketing and promotion spending on the cable operator's systems are triggered.

If Current TV misses the audience benchmark in two consecutive quarters, another clause is triggered that would allow Time Warner Cable to drop the channel. The condition was built into the most recent distribution pact between the two parties, which was signed in 2010.

"Time Warner Cable has been flirting with the idea of pulling Current off its systems for some time now," said one of the sources, who all spoke on condition of anonymity.

All of the sources interviewed for this story declined to provide the precise threshold for overall viewers.

Olbermann, the feisty host of the politically tinged talk show "Countdown," was fired from Current TV last week and replaced with former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer.

Top 50 Things Accomplished by President Barack Obama

Keep a print out of these to give to people !

A look back at Obama's first term.

1. Passed Health Care Reform: After five presidents over a century failed to create universal health insurance, signed the Affordable Care Act (2010). It will cover 32 million uninsured Americans beginning in 2014 and mandates a suite of experimental measures to cut health care cost growth, the number one cause of America's long-term fiscal problems.

2. Passed the Stimulus: Signed $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2009 to spur economic growth amid greatest recession since the Great Depression. Weeks after stimulus went into effect, unemployment claims began to subside. Twelve months later, the private sector began producing more jobs than it was losing, and it has continued to do so for twenty-three straight months, creating a total of nearly 3.7 million new private-sector jobs.

BREAKING: Kraft Becomes Third Corporation To Drop ALEC

Following Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, tonight Kraft became the third major corporation to announce its departure from the right-wing business front group ALEC.

Yesterday, Kraft told NPR that "it was keeping its membership in ALEC." But by this evening, Kraft reversed its position, announcing it would no longer support ALEC. The company has issued the following statement:

The Gullible Center

By PAUL KRUGMAN NY Times

So, can we talk about the Paul Ryan phenomenon?

And yes, I mean the phenomenon, not the man. Mr. Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee and the principal author of the last two Congressional Republican budget proposals, isn't especially interesting. He's a garden-variety modern G.O.P. extremist, an Ayn Rand devotee who believes that the answer to all problems is to cut taxes on the rich and slash benefits for the poor and middle class.

Government Services and Income Tax Forms

Government Services and Income Tax Forms

Most standard tax forms are available free of charge at your post office and all forms are available free of charge on-line.  The Internal Revenue Service also provides free advice for taxpayers on many issues.  The IRS website is the usually best "first stop" for any tax related question.

The Internal Revenue Service Homepage
http://www.irs.gov/

This is the home page of the IRS.  It provides links to a wide array of governmental resources and materials.

IRS Tax Forms

Taxpayers can find a complete list of government pamphlets and tax forms (with full instructions) on this page.

Interactive Tax Assistant

http://www.irs.gov/ita/index.html?portlet=105

The IRS provides a free interactive online tax assistant.  This service provides answers to the most commonly asked questions (e.g., "Do I need to file income taxes?" "Who can I claim as a dependent?" and "Am I eligible for a Child Tax Credit?").  This site answers all of the most commonly asked questions in plain English, which is accessible to people with average reading and math skills (the site is also linked to a Spanish language version of the site).

Your 2011 Federal Taxpayer Receipt

In his 2011 State of the Union Address, President Obama promised that, for the first time ever, American taxpayers would be able to go online and see exactly how their federal tax dollars are spent. The receipt launched that year and, now, we've updated the tool to reflect current spending. Just enter a few pieces of information about your taxes, and the taxpayer receipt will give you a breakdown of how your tax dollars are spent on priorities like education, veterans benefits, or health care.
