Stand with women : Hands off Birth Control Dallas rally 3/24

WHAT? Rally, march, & demonstrate with the North TX Light Brigade!

WHEN? 6:30 - 8:30pm, Monday, March 24, 2014

WHERE? Klyde Warren Park; meet on the sidewalk adjacent to the NE-bound Woodall Rogers access road, between Olive and Pearl Streets

WHY? On March 25th, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments concerning whether employers can eliminate birth control from the health plans of women employees to which they are otherwise entitled by federal law, simply based on religious views. This goes even if the purpose for which women are using it is non-contraceptive (as 1 in 3 women who use birth control report) such as to deal with cramps or migraines during menstruation, or acne, or endometriosis.

The case was brought by Hobby Lobby, a chain of over 500 craft stores with over 20,000 employees, and joined by others. The law already provides an exemption for religious organizations seeking one, such as the Little Sisters for the Poor Home for the Aged (run by nuns).

If successful, not only will women lose access to affordable medication but it could lead to a slippery slope where employers cite the Court ruling and their own personal religious views as justification for denying coverage for blood transfusions, vaccinations, etc. And given the cost and reliance many women have on birth control, it's not fair to say to middle or low-income workers, just buy your own.

So our message is: WOMEN'S HEALTH DECISIONS SHOULD BE LEFT UP TO WOMEN, NOT THEIR BOSSES!

*Wear pink and/or orange and bring your voice! On-message signs are welcome...and we have several banners and signs you can borrow if you don't have the time or inclination to make your own. RSVP/info on Facebook: http://tinyurl.com/lwcgmlx  or contact jharris866@aol.com.

The use of the Arabic word for wind created a tornado amongst bigots on Facebook, but for every Negative Nancy there were 10 Tolerant Toms, which is something to be proud of as America continues the fight against racisim.

That Old-Time Whistle

That Old-Time Whistle

by

 Paul Krugman

There are many negative things you can say about Paul Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee and the G.O.P.'s de facto intellectual leader. But you have to admit that he's a very articulate guy, an expert at sounding as if he knows what he's talking about.

So it's comical, in a way, to see Mr. Ryan trying to explain away some recent remarks in which he attributed persistent poverty to a "culture, in our inner cities in particular, of men not working and just generations of men not even thinking about working." He was, he says, simply being "inarticulate." How could anyone suggest that it was a racial dog-whistle? Why, he even cited the work of serious scholars - people like Charles Murray, most famous for arguing that blacks are genetically inferior to whites. Oh, wait.

http://www.meetup.com/randomacts/

I will be parked near the front of the parking lot near 7-11 for donations --- also I am willing to meet up afterward in Richardson if that works for some of you!

I just got a note from one of the workers at Mosaic's Women's & Children's Shelter that they are desperately needing toys.

I was recently at the shelter and notice that many of the toys and games the children had were broken and worn out.

     1. outdoor toys (jumpropes, soccer balls, basket balls, etc.)

   2. blocks/legos (something for ages 3-7)

   3. board games (durable, plastic parts, the games with cards and fake money get torn and lost easily; example checkers, connect four, guesswho, etc.)

Please, if you are able to contribute this is a great organization to donate to.   Thank you!!!
