North Texas Progressive End-of-Year Fundraiser: events this week and how YOU can help!

North Texas Progressive

There are a couple of events this week- see column on right below.

End of year fundraiser !

Help this great newsletter with a much needed donation at the end of the year!

With the tough economy of these past couple of years, we've had very low $ fundraisers but we've soldiered on keeping folks informed about events and news especially for progressive North Texans.

NO ONE does what we do !

Sure you can get on a Democratic club email list or Facebook but that will only tell you about events happening in that one designated area, we will tell you about ALL local events - happy hour events happening near work or events happening by friends and family on the weekends, that you are welcome to attend. Do you want to have to subscribe to 10 email lists and read every one of them ? Just let us aggregate it all for you!

We also DO NOT limit news to only Democrats-- we use "Progressive " and we mean it. We bring you news from many independent groups, as well as news of all important protests or actions that may not be connected to electoral politics but are of great social, environmental and/or economic good.

Many of our members date back to original email / online communities that were connected to Progressive radio of the past - both of the 2 past local radio station attempts and Air America Radio.

This group's origins lie in promoting alternative news sources and we've seen great changes since 2004 when Air America first signed on the air but the need is still great for alternatives to the crappy mainstream news !

Yes --we will celebrate our 10th anniversary  in 2014!  Amazing!

There are still few ways to get out progressive news and information and we do everything we can to include all local events in the free weekly e-newsletter and then we try to follow up on events with some pictures or report on how the events went.

We are always happy to help promote local events on Facebook and Twitter .

This year will be big for our country and Texas and we will be very busy fighting for Wendy Davis running against all odds to become the next Texas Governor and to get folks elected that will help turn this state around!

The mid-term national elections will decide what real progress President Obama can make with the Democrats in Congress in advancing his agenda in his last 2 years of his presidency.

Just a few things we need to work on in 2014:

Voter suppression

Women's health and reproductive freedom

LGBT rights and marriage equality

Expanding ACA/ Obamacare - public option!

Environment and global climate change

This newsletter will be out there every single week doing everything we can for North Texas Democrats & Progressives to get them ready, get them informed, get them mobilized and get them inspired !

All we need is your help!

Please donate to the newsletter ( for every $20 you donate) you will earn a chance at our next fundraiser to win wonderful raffle prizes. GO HERE click on donate : http://www.northtexasprogressive.org/

Dallas Gas Drilling Task Force

We need as many fracking opponents in the audience as possible.  If you wish to speak on record, you can certainly do that, too, but you are not required.  The more folks there and the more new attendees added to the usual suspects, the stronger we will be.

The proposed ordinance is the City Plan Commission's modifications to the one proposed by the Gas Drilling Task Force - yes, you should be confused.  We have fought many layers of battles at City Hall to get an ordinance that protects the health and safety of the people of Dallas.  The current version is far from ideal, but we do like the 1500 foot setbacks between drilling area and protected properties.  We want to stop the industry-favoring members of the Council in their efforts to reduce those setbacks by an amendment.  We do want the Council to amend this ordinance to return to the ban on drilling in floodplains and parklands.

They are scheduled to begin receiving public comments at 1:00 on both dates.  Bodies in the seats are key to our ability to pressure the Council.  If you can only attend one of the meetings, December 11th is the most important.

Date:  Wednesday, December 11th
Time:  1:00 - 4:00 pm
Place:  Dallas City Hall, Council Chambers
Parking:  available at metered spots at the rear of City Hall, and at several privately owned parking lots in the vicinity

The Punishment Cure

By PAUL KRUGMAN

Six years have passed since the United States economy entered the Great Recession, four and a half since it officially began to recover, but long-term unemployment remains disastrously high. And Republicans have a theory about why this is happening. Their theory is, as it happens, completely wrong. But they're sticking to it - and as a result, 1.3 million American workers, many of them in desperate financial straits, are set to lose unemployment benefits at the end of December.

Refusing to Expand Medicaid Will Cost Texas $9 Billion

A new study by the Commonwealth Fund, "How States Stand to Gain or Lose Federal Funds by Opting In or Out of the Medicaid Expansion," shows that Texas clearly stands to lose the most of any state. Because of Rick Perry's refusal to expand Medicaid, Texas will forego over $9 billion in federal funds while Perry holds out for a Medicaid block grant that he'll never get.
