PCCDD Meeting North Texas Food Bank Nov 2nd

Did you know that the North Texas Food Bank provides approximately 175,000 meals per day while 300,000 meals per day are needed?

In the middle of such desperate need, the Cruz-designed federal government shutdown denied the North Texas Food Bank 10 truckloads of food in one week.

At our next meeting, come learn about the dimensions of hunger in North Texas and the vital food and services the North Texas Food Bank provides. Sandra Lewis, the Director of Development for the NTFB, will educate us on this issue.

Also, in light of the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President Kennedy, we will have our club treasurer, Gene Soslow, share with us his eyewitness experiences from that day in Dallas.

Date: Saturday, November 2nd

Time: 10:30 am to 12:00 pm

Place: Oak Lawn Branch Library - Cedar Springs Road at Knight Street

All Democratic candidates for the 2014 primary election are welcome to arrive early to mingle with attendees and to give a 30-second "elevator speech" to the audience at the beginning of the meeting.

Saturday, November 2, 2013  11:00am in CDT

It's time to strike at the root of our problems!

The March Against Corruption is an international campaign to raise awareness about the corrupting influence of money and special interests in governance and public policy making; to provide a forum for people to organize and speak out against corruption; and to educate the public about the consequences of corruption. The March Against Corruption is not about right versus left, it's about right versus wrong.http://marchagainstcorruption.com/who-we-are/

It's None of Your Business Disconnect Stops Sites from Secretly Tracking You

Yesterday, we told you how you can record everything you do. Today, we're making sure others can't do the same. Why?Because you are being watched.

No, we're not talking some shadowy government agency. We're talking about the innumerable sites across the Internet that track your every move without the decency to even say "please."

The big boot for that nasty bug is Disconnect, a browser plug-in compatible with Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Opera that helps you visualize and block the trackers. Just install the plug-in to immediately embargo over 2,000 trackers.

That blockage has myriad benefits. Gone are those creepy "targeted" ads. Plus, disconnected pages use 17% less bandwidth and load 27% faster.

Disconnect's iOS app does the same for your phone and tablet, and there's a special plug-in for search engine privacy, too. About that last feature: Disconnect was created by some ex-Googlers and does a great job of stymieing even their best targeting. Who's watching whom now?  Texas Voter ID Law Discriminates Against Women, Students and Minorities

Texas's new voter ID law got off to a rocky start this week as early voting began for state constitutional amendments. The law was previously blocked as discriminatory by the federal courts under the Voting Rights Act in 2012, until the Supreme Court invalidated Section 4 of the VRA in June. (The Department of Justice has filed suit against the law under Section 2 of the VRA.) Now we are seeing the disastrous ramifications of the Supreme Court's decision.

Based on Texas' own data, 600,000 to 800,000 registered voters don't have the government-issued ID needed to cast a ballot, with Hispanics 46 to 120 percent more likely than whites to lack an ID. But a much larger segment of the electorate, particularly women, will be impacted by the requirement that a voter's ID be "substantially similar" to their name on the voter registration rolls. According to a 2006 study by the Brennan Center for Justice, a third of all women have citizenship documents that do not match their current legal name.

The Big Kludge
by Paul Krugman NY Times

The good news about HealthCare.gov, the portal to Obamacare's health exchange, is that the administration is no longer minimizing its problems. That's the first step toward fixing the mess - and it will get fixed, although it's anyone's guess whether the new promise of a smoothly functioning system by the end of November will be met. We know, after all, that Obamacare is workable, since many states that chose to run their own exchanges are doing quite well.
