West Memphis Three Freed From Jail 18 Years After Being Convicted Amid "Wave of Satanic Hysteria"

A trio of men convicted of brutally murdering three young boys in Arkansas in 1993 were released from prison Friday. Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, Jr. - otherwise known as the West Memphis Three - entered a rare plea deal in which they maintained their innocence, but plead guilty to murder, with the state of Arkansas recognizing them as child-killers safe enough to be set free. The men were convicted of the killings after an investigation largely fueled by unsubstantiated rumors of a Satanic ritual. In 2007, new forensic tests of evidence at the crime scene turned up no genetic material belonging to any of the men. We speak to filmmaker Joe Berlinger, co-director of the documentary covering the case, "Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills." The film sparked an international movement to "Free the West Memphis Three."

MLK Joins Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson and FDR on the National Wall

It's not very often (1885, 1922, 1943, 1997) that a memorial dedicated to an individual American opens on the National Mall in Washington. Today is one of those rare days, and the person it honors could not be more deserving, as far as we're concerned: Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Now, I say to you today my friends, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

Nestled next to the Tidal Basin and situated directly between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the MLK National Memorial was first proposed in 1984, and in 1996 President Clinton signed Congressional legislation---back when Congress was still functional---giving it the green light.

You can take a virtual tour of the MLK Memorial here. The official dedication is Sunday August 28th , the 48th anniversary of King's "I Have Dream" speech, and among the speakers will be the president. (Dedication FAQs are here.)

A Debate: Should the U.S. Approve TransCanada's Massive Keystone XL Tar Sands Oil Pipeline?

Thousands of environmental activists from across the continent plan to gather in Washington, D.C., tomorrow to launch a two-week protest against the proposed Keystone XL pipeline that would carry tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada, to U.S. oil refineries in the Gulf of Mexico. As the Obama administration faces industry pressure on one side and sustained grassroots protest on the other, we host a debate between Cindy Schild, the refining issues manager at the American Petroleum Institute, and Jane Kleeb, executive director of Bold Nebraska, a group taking part in the Washington protests. Hacktivism's Global Reach, From Targeting Scientology to Backing WikiLeaks and the Arab Spring

In recent years, online hackers who identified as being part of Anonymous and other groups have carried out dozens of high-profile online operations. When MasterCard and Visa suspended payments to WikiLeaks last December, hackers with Anonymous briefly took down the websites of both credit card giants. We take an inside look at how online hacker activist groups operate with three guests: Peter Fein, an activist who works with the group Telecomix, a volunteer organization that has supported free speech and an open internet in the Middle East; Gabriella Coleman, an assistant professor of media, culture and communication at New York University whose first book, "Coding Freedom: The Aesthetics and the Ethics of Hacking," is forthcoming; and a member of the hacktivist group Anonymous, going by the pseudonym "X." The film, a collection of true stories about love and marriage, will be shown at Cinemark West Plano, 3800 Dallas Parkway, Plano Texas 75093.   Tickets are just $10.00 and available in advance at www.EqualityTexas.org, Event Calendar.

The film's director and producer, Drew Emery, launched the Hearts + Minds Campaign as a way of making his film available to communities everywhere. "The film succeeds so well in a variety of community settings - largely because it was made on the community level, features true stories from ordinary people and, rather than preaching a particular point of view, speaks to the heart through very direct storytelling."

10 Faux Progressive Companies ... With Some Dirty Secrets

Many of these companies have earned credibility among progressives, despite having a poor track record with the environment, sexism, union busting, monopolizing, and more.

What makes a company "progressive"? A CEO's lefty politics? A dedication to people over profits? A solid environmental track record?

Many companies have earned credibility among progressives by marketing themselves as "different" (Apple), "green" (Seventh Generation), or "anti-sweatshop" (American Apparel), despite having a poor track record with the environment, sexism, union busting, monopolizing, and more. These companies are boosting revenues by tapping into the growing demand for socially-conscious products and businesses, especially among the wealthy, well-educated sub-set of progressive consumers.

I rounded up information on ten of the best-known companies that should be a disappointment to progressive consumers:

Economic Myths: We Separate Fact From Fiction

With the recent Iowa straw poll and President Obama's bus tour, Americans are hearing a cacophony of arguments about the wobbly economy. The federal stimulus package passed in 2009 was either a deficit-busting failure full of wasteful projects or an unparalleled rescue that would have been more successful if it had only been bigger. Taxes are either stifling or the lowest they've ever been. America needs to invest in infrastructure, or "infrastructure" is merely a euphemism for more government spending. So, here's our guide to the most prevalent economic myths.

1. Taxes have been going up and are high compared to levels in other countries.

Progressive Social Media

The White House Twitter 'Office Hours' Brings In 3,100 New Followers Per Day

Since Launching (AllTwitter)

It looks like holding office hours is good for both teacher and student. AllTwitter: What do the news outlets you follow on Twitter say about you? That's what the folks at SocialFlow, the social media optimization platform, wanted to know, so they did a rigorous study of the audience of several of the most prominent news sources on Twitter, including The New York Times, The Economist, the BBC, and Al Jazeera.

 here

BreakingNews Joins Tumblr, Will Aggregate Breaking News

BreakingNews, the MSNBC.com-run operation that's best-known for the @BreakingNews Twitter feed, has officially joined another social network: Tumblr.

http://breakingnews.tumblr.com/

The White House Joins Foursquare

The White House is now on Foursquare, keeping followers up-to-date on where President Obama has gone and what he did while he was there. Followers can also check in to things like town hall events with the President. Constitutional question: Can Obama be both a mayor and the President? (I'm sure we'll be the only ones to come up with that one.)

The White House is heavy into social media, and even has a LinkedIn page we didn't know about. A Foursquare page does seem superfluous given the way that the media tracks just about every move the President makes. But this administration has made a point of being as digitally savvy as possible, so we'll see how this adds to their existing social media program. They're open to feedback, which you can submit here.

OUR leaders have asked for "shared sacrifice." But when they did the asking, they spared me. I checked with my mega-rich friends to learn what pain they were expecting. They, too, were left untouched.

While the poor and middle class fight for us in Afghanistan, and while most Americans struggle to make ends meet, we mega-rich continue to get our extraordinary tax breaks. Some of us are investment managers who earn billions from our daily labors but are allowed to classify our income as "carried interest," thereby getting a bargain 15 percent tax rate. Others own stock index futures for 10 minutes and have 60 percent of their gain taxed at 15 percent, as if they'd been long-term investors.

"Nickel & Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America": Barbara Ehrenreich on the Job Crisis & Wealth Gap

Standard & Poor's announced Friday it has downgraded the U.S. credit rating for the first time in history, just days after Congress approved a $2.1 trillion deficit-reduction plan. We speak with Barbara Ehrenreich, who has just published the 10th anniversary edition of her book "Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America," in which she tells the story of life in low-wage America and tries to earn a living working as a waitress, hotel maid, nursing home aide and Wal-Mart associate. Burgess wants to impeach Obama and redistricting - what can you do ?

From Tarrant County Dems.....According to yesterday's Star Telegram, Congressman Michael Burgess believes that President Barack Obama should be impeached! He doesn't know what for, and apparently he doesn't care. According to Rep. Burgess "We need to tie things up..." It is hard to decide what is worse, a sitting congressman's admission that using impeachment as a stalling tactic is a good idea, or that an incumbent congressman is so scared of losing his job that he would support such a plan just to appease 100 extremists.

Congressman Burgess was elected to represent all of the people in District 26, not just the most vocal, angry, out-of-touch and extreme elements within it. In response to his absurd remarks, I encourage you to do the following four things. It will take no more than five minutes of your time, and will be an effective message to Congressman Burgess that neither his constituents, nor the people of Texas, approve of his immature nonsense.

1. Contact his office and tell him you are offended by his actions and that you will remember them on November 6, 2012

2. Forward/facebook/tweet about this to let everyone you know, not just Democrats, but all of the voters in Tarrant County, letting them know what kind of person Congressman Burgess is.

3. Sign the following petition to Attorney General Eric Holder, protesting the gerrymandered redistricting maps forced on us by the Republicans - maps which virtually guarantee Republicans like Burgess will stay in power.

The Texas Unmiracle by Paul Krugman NY Times

As expected, Rick Perry, the governor of Texas, has announced that he is running for president. And we already know what his campaign will be about: faith in miracles.

Some of these miracles will involve things that you're liable to read in the Bible. But if he wins the Republican nomination, his campaign will probably center on a more secular theme: the alleged economic miracle in Texas, which, it's often asserted, sailed through the Great Recession almost unscathed thanks to conservative economic policies. And Mr. Perry will claim that he can restore prosperity to America by applying the same policies at a national level.

So what you need to know is that the Texas miracle is a myth, and more broadly that Texan experience offers no useful lessons on how to restore national full employment.

America's Real Job Creators Are Broke

by: Jim Hightower

As narrators used to say in Western movies: "Meanwhile, back at the ranch..."

Our policymakers in Washington have totally lost sight of what's happening at the ranch. John Boehner's GOP-controlled House and Barack Obama's White House have agreed to slash trillions of dollars from the federal budget, as though that's America's most important need.

Bovine excrement! If they'd lift their vision to the countryside, even they could figure out that our great economic urgency is for the creation of good, middle-class jobs to get America moving again - moving upward and moving together.

Bill Maher's New Rule: If The GOP Gets The Tea Party, Liberals Need The 'Donner Party'

In Bill Maher's final New Rule of the night, he suggested that if tea partiers get to control the Republican party and act like hostage negotiators, the Democrats should have their own branch party that would be just as ridiculously partisan as the tea party, because the only thing they haven't tried yet is fighting crazy with crazy.

Reflecting on the past week of debt talks, Maher compared the tea party to that loon you always see in the subway who's rambling on about something or other. He then compared the tea party's influence over the Republican party to a really cheesy action movie where a bank robber is pointing a gun at some woman's head in order to get her cooperation. In these scenarios, as Maher stated, you have the typical police negotiator (played by some random character actor) who can't get anywhere with the psycho holding a gun, so they have to bring in the renegade, a "Mel Gibson" character, who can talk the robber down because they're both operating on the same insane level. Maher concluded that if the Democrats are going to be effective negotiators against tea party Republicans, they're going to need "their own Mel Gibson."
