Protesters Planning Demonstration at George W. Bush Presidential Center Opening

The George W. Bush Presidential Center, construction of which has clogged up the eastern part of the SMU campus for years now, will be christened at a private ceremony on April 25. The former president will be there, as will wife Laura and an unspecified numbers of alumni from the Bush-Cheney administration.

"With world leaders invited to join President and Mrs. Bush for this historic day," the center's website boasts, "the event is expected to enjoy internationally-televised coverage."

In other words, it's the perfect stage for a protest. That's what a coalition of local human rights-oriented groups are planning to do. They're organizing what they're calling "The People's Response" to speak out against Bush administration policies.

The New Jim Crow

By Michelle Alexander

List Price:

$19.95

Price:

$12.19 & eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping on orders over $25.

Once in a great while a book comes along that changes the way we see the world and helps to fuel a nationwide social movement. The New Jim Crow is such a book. Praised by Harvard Law professor Lani Guinier as "brave and bold," this book directly challenges the notion that the election of Barack Obama signals a new era of colorblindness. With dazzling candor, legal scholar Michelle Alexander argues that "we have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it." By targeting black men through the War on Drugs and decimating communities of color, the U.S. criminal justice system functions as a contemporary system of racial control-relegating millions to a permanent second-class status-even as it formally adheres to the principle of colorblindness. In the words of Benjamin Todd Jealous, president and CEO of the NAACP, this book is a "call to action."

Charts: This Is What Happens When You Defund Planned Parenthood

Dozens of clinics have shut down in Texas, leaving nearly 200,000 women in search of affordable health care.

In the past two years, Texas legislators slashed funds for family planning and passed up $30 million a year in federal Medicaid money, largely to squeeze Planned Parenthood out of the state's women's health programs. Last week, hundreds gathered at the south steps of the Texas State Capitol in Austin to protest the resulting public health mess: Researchers say nearly 200,000 Texas women have lost or could lose access to contraception, cancer screenings, and basic preventive care, especially in low-income, rural parts of the state. I reported from the rally: read on

Texas Rallies to Keep Planned Parenthood Funded

Texas Rallies to Keep Planned Parenthood Funded

Marches of Folly
by Paul Krugman

Ten years ago, America invaded Iraq; somehow, our political class decided that we should respond to a terrorist attack by making war on a regime that, however vile, had nothing to do with that attack.

Some voices warned that we were making a terrible mistake - that the case for war was weak and possibly fraudulent, and that far from yielding the promised easy victory, the venture was all too likely to end in costly grief. And those warnings were, of course, right.

After a Powerful Lobbyist Intervenes, EPA Reverses Stance on Polluting Texas County's Water

When Uranium Energy Corp. sought permission to launch a large-scale mining project in Goliad County, Texas, it seemed as if the Environmental Protection Agency would stand in its way.

To get the ore out of the ground, the company needed a permit to pollute a pristine supply of underground drinking water in an area already parched by drought.

Further, EPA scientists feared that radioactive contaminants would flow from the mining site into water wells used by nearby homes. Uranium Energy said the pollution would remain contained, but resisted doing the advanced scientific testing and modeling the government asked for to prove it.
