Last 10 years Dallas Cop Shooting Database Is Sobering, Fascinating

In late October, Dallas police chief David Brown promised the public that his department would make data from the last 12 years of Dallas police officers shooting people readily available.

On Tuesday, just as everyone was checking out for Thanksgiving, Brown made good on his promise.

Democrats Against Reform

Paul Krugman

It's easy to understand why Republicans wish health reform had never happened, and are now hoping that the Supreme Court will abandon its principles and undermine the law. But it's more puzzling - and disturbing - when Democrats like Charles Schumer, senator from New York, declare that the Obama administration's signature achievement was a mistake.

Why Texas Is Shutting Prison

Texas isn't exactly known as a bastion of social progressivism. The state goes consistently bright red in elections, has mounted an escalating war on choice and women's rights, and famously gifted the nation with George W. Bush. Yet, something remarkable is happening in the Texan criminal justice system: Texan authorities are closing prisons.

In a country that incarcerates 6.3% of its population (the United States accounts for nearly 25% of the global population of incarcerated people), with radical racial inequalities in terms of prison demographics, Texas is instituting a huge move for prison reform, and one that could pave the way for the rest of the nation. If Texas can do it, so can other states; not only can they, but they should. http://t.co/i0zGDPcEtB

Join a Buy Nothing Group

I've long been a fan of Buy Nothing Day, the spunky alterna-holiday that shoots spitballs at Black Friday.

And now, thanks to the Buy Nothing Project, it's easier than ever to buy nothing all year long. I discovered the project when a friend invited me to join a local Buy Nothing Facebook group. (Thanks, Kristen!) The first such group was launched on Bainbridge Island, Wash., in July 2013. It proved so popular that it soon started splintering and spreading. Now there are about 300 such groups around the U.S., Canada, and a handful of other countries, with some 80,000 members. (If there's not one in your neighborhood, you can start one up.)

Stand with Mansfield Residents for a More Protective Gas Drilling Ordinance

Clean Air Activists Unite! You have nothing to lose but another bad gas drilling ordinance..... Mansfield City Council Work Session on a New Gas Drilling Ordinance

6 pm, Wednesday, December 3rd

Mansfield Performing Arts Center workroom

1110 W Debbie Ln, Mansfield, TX 76063

Denton's successful citizens revolt is off the streets for now and in the courts. The next organized front in the battle over urban gas drilling in DFW is the Fort Worth suburb of Mansfield. And this next Wednesday, December 3rd, beginning at 6 pm, hard-pressed residents there need your help in turning the tide.

In response to months of grassroots effort on the ground, and only after the very first presentation by a physician on the medical consequences of fracking, Mansfield's city council has called for a "work session" to "discuss" changing its circa-2009 drilling ordinance for next week.

The New Texas Governor's Cynical Immigration Threat

Greg Abbott, the state's Republican governor-elect, is threatening to sue Obama over the immigration order. Here's why that plan doesn't make any sense.

After a dozen years of serving as Texas attorney general, Greg Abbott prides himself on knowing the law.

But now that the governor-elect of the Lone Star State is threatening to sue President Obama over his executive action to temporarily shield from deportation some categories of illegal immigrants, it's obvious that the Republican is failing other subjects.
