"At a time when the legitimate aspirations of people in many regions of the world for greater freedom, dignity and a better life are too often met with violence and repression, I urge States to respect the fundamental rights of all people. Torture and other forms of cruel, degrading and inhuman treatment and punishment, wherever they occur and whatever the circumstances, can never be justified." ---United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, 2011.

In observance of this National Week of Action Against Torture, North Texas peace and justice activists will march and rally in downtown Dallas dressed as prisoners in orange jumpsuits and black hoods. The purpose of the demonstration is:

--to call for an end to unlawful detentions at Guantanamo - close Guantanamo!

--to remind the public that people are still in prison without a trial,

--to remind the public that torture is illegal under international law,

--to ensure accountability for torture: investigate, prosecute and provide remedy for victims

--repeal indefinite detention provisions in the NDAA

--to make public the Senate Intelligence Committee's report on CIA torture

This peaceful, nonviolent demonstration is co-sponsored by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-DFW), Amnesty International Group 205, CODEPINK Greater Dallas, Bill of Rights Defense Committee (BORDC) Dallas, Dallas Peace Center, Pax Christi Dallas, North Texas Veterans for Peace, and Occupy Dallas.

Ralph Nader: 30 Million Workers Would Benefit from Raising Minimum Wage to 1968 Level

In 2008, Barack Obama pledged to raise the minimum wage every year once elected, but the hourly rate of $7.25 hasn't increased since 2007. Low-wage workers now make far less than they did four decades ago. Last week Illinois Democratic Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. introduced the Catching Up to 1968 Act of 2012. It draws its name from the idea that the federal minimum wage would be $10.55 an hour now if it had kept up with inflation over the past 40 years. While the bill has about 20 co-sponsors so far, President Obama has yet to endorse it. We speak to longtime consumer advocate and former presidential candidate Ralph Nader. Watch/Listen/Read

Military Suicide Epidemic: More U.S. Soldiers Have Killed Themselves Than Died on Battlefield in 2012

More U.S. soldiers have died this year by taking their own lives than on the battlefield. The Pentagon says there have been at least 154 suicides among active-duty troops in 2012, a rate of nearly one each day. We're joined by three guests: Kevin Hines, who survived a jump off the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and now counsels suicidal soldiers; Bonnie Carroll, co-chair of the Pentagon's Task Force on the Prevention of Suicide in the Armed Forces and president of the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors; and journalist Aaron Glantz, author of the book The War Comes Home: Washington's Battle Against America's Veterans

Lappe grew up in Fort Worth, and her parents, John and Ina Moore, founded the First Unitarian Church in Fort Worth.  The Price of Inequality: How Today's Divided Society Endangers Our Future

By Joseph E. Stiglitz

The top 1 percent of Americans control 40 percent of the nation's wealth. And, as Joseph E. Stiglitz explains, while those at the top enjoy the best health care, education, and benefits of wealth, they fail to realize that "their fate is bound up with how the other 99 percent live."

Stiglitz draws on his deep understanding of economics to show that growing inequality is not inevitable: moneyed interests compound their wealth by stifling true, dynamic capitalism. They have made America the most unequal advanced industrial country while crippling growth, trampling on the rule of law, and undermining democracy. The result: a divided society that cannot tackle its most pressing problems. With characteristic insight, Stiglitz examines our current state, then teases out its implications for democracy, for monetary and budgetary policy, and for globalization. He closes with a plan for a more just and prosperous future.

Joseph Stiglitz: The Price of Inequality
Noble Prize winning, and highly influential, economist Joseph Stiglitz explains why our economic system is failing most Americans.READ MORE

Frank Rich: Nuke 'Em

Why negative advertisements are powerful, essential, and sometimes (see "Daisy") even artistic.

Barack Obama has made his mistakes as a politician and as a president, but here is one thing he indisputably did right: pummel Mitt Romney with a volley of attack ads once Romney sewed up the Republican nomination. Obama was playing by the rules, honoring historical precedent in both parties, and pursuing the one must-do task before him in an election year (winning). And yet from the blowback that erupted once his Bain ad hit the fan-from his own camp, from the pious arbiters of Beltway manners, and, of course, from his adversaries-you'd think Romney was an innocent civilian under assault by a drone. What was everyone so shocked about? As far back as August 2011, Obama's political hit men were signaling the inevitable to ...

Ohio State University researchers have released a study about "experience-taking," the psychological term for the moment when readers find themselves "feeling the emotions, thoughts, beliefs and internal responses" of a fictional character when reading. One part of the experiment involved 82 undergraduate students who were registered to vote. They read different versions of stories about fictional voters coping with problems as they tried to vote on Election Day--some were written

Joseph Stiglitz on The Price of Inequality: How Today's Divided Society Endangers Our Future

Several months before Occupy Wall Street, the Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz wrote "Of the 1%, by the 1%, for the 1%," an article for Vanity Fair. He returns to the subject in his new book looking at how inequality is now greater in the United States than any other industrialized nation. He notes that the six heirs of the Wal-Mart fortune command wealth equivalent to the entire bottom 30 percent of American society. On Tuesday, Bloomberg News reported that pay for the top CEOs on Wall Street increased by more than 20 percent last year. Meanwhile, census data shows nearly one in two Americans, or 150 million people, have fallen into poverty or could be classified as low-income. Watch/Listen/Read

The new book, Private: Bradley Manning, WikiLeaks, and the Biggest Exposure of Official Secrets in American History, tracks Manning's trajectory from growing up as a gay teen in small-town Oklahoma to joining the U.S. Army, where he found success as an intelligence analyst before being charged with the largest U.S. intelligence breach on record. VIDEO: ProPublica's "Free the Files" Project on Rachel Maddow

** sign up to help locally with this project **
Last night, reporter Justin Elliott was a guest on The Rachel Maddow Show to talk about ProPublica's Free the Files project, a crowdsourcing effort to post political ad data online.

By law, broadcasters are required to keep detailed information on these ads, including when they aired, how much they cost, and who bought them. This treasure trove of data, however, is kept in cumbersome paper files that are only accessible by physically visiting local stations. The FCC has since voted to require broadcasters to upload these documents online, but media companies have been lobbying against this transparency measure. Earlier this week, Elliott reported on Republican efforts to block funding for the FCC to implement this measure and further delay the transition to an online database.

As Maddow highlights in the segment, "the investigative journalism all-stars over at ProPublica have decided that watching and waiting for this to wend its way through the system is kinda boring." Instead, we had readers from across the country help us "free the files" at their local stations and post the data online, and we hope you'll continue to follow our reporting on this important election season issue.

Ben and Jerry's Co-founder: Time to Occupy Dollar Bills

Yahoo! News reports that Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream, is teaming up with Move to Amend to "distribute rubber stamps with anti-corporate election spending messages so that the politically-minded can mark their dollar bills."

Cohen plans to put a giant stamping machine on a national tour in August to encourage "thousands of people to buy rubber stamps and stamp any currency that comes into their possession."

Slogans like "Corporations are not people," "Money is not speech" and "Not to be used for bribing politicians," will now adorn currency in an Occupy cash campaign.

The goal of Move to Amend is to secure a constitutional amendment that says "corporations do not enjoy the same protected rights as individuals and that money is not a form of speech."

Cohen's attorney says that as long as the bills are still legible, it is legal to put the stamps on them.

Some merchandise at Texas Republican Convention is made in China

It's not all politics at the Republican state convention.

Delegates are crowding concession booths to haul off everything from "conservative" children's literature to glittery elephant-shaped brooches and nonpartisan $75 neckties with armadillos and oil-field pump jacks instead of pachyderms.

Despite all the patriotic flag-waving at the gathering, many of the goods were made in communist China. And an "I Palin" T-shirt for women was sewn in Nicaragua -- led by President Daniel Ortega of the socialist Sandinista National Liberation Front, against whom President Ronald Reagan armed the contra force.
