Planned Parenthood seeks support for women's health care in Tarrant County

In response to a growing need for access to affordable, essential reproductive healthcare in Tarrant County, Planned Parenthood has engaged in a collaborative effort with a wide range of local leaders and donors to establish a new state-of-the-art health center and headquarters in Fort Worth.

We are pleased to announce that this health center is now under construction and is expected to open in 2013, expanding access to essential healthcare services for so many in need! Click here to make a contribution today to support our efforts to provide high quality, low cost preventive healthcare to women and men in Tarrant County.

Planned Parenthood has been a trusted part of the healthcare safety net in North Texas for more than 75 years, and our new health center will provide a base for local administrative staff while providing educational programs, HIV prevention case management, as well as a full range of reproductive healthcare services.

The health center is funded in full by private donations from our supporters in Tarrant County and across North Texas. In the wake of major state budget cuts for reproductive healthcare services, supporters like you have been incredibly generous in supporting Planned Parenthood's efforts to expand access to high quality healthcare facilities for families in need.

Will you make a contribution today to stand with Planned Parenthood in providing preventive healthcare and education to the women, men and teens who rely on us every day?

"War is the Enemy of the Poor": Cornel West and Tavis Smiley on Poverty, MLK, Election 2012

In part two of our interview with Tavis Smiley and Prof. Cornel West, they discuss growing up in working-class households. Looking at current events, Smiley and West cite Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s comment that "war is the enemy of the poor." They compare the amount of money spent on the war in Iraq, and the 2012 presidential campaign, to funding for programs that assist the one in two Americans who are now poor. Watch/Listen/Read

U.S. Nuns Face Vatican Rebuke for "Radical Feminism" in Stances on Church Teachings, Social Justice

The Vatican has reprimanded the largest group of Catholic nuns in the United States, saying they have focused too heavily on issues of social justice, while failing to speak out enough on "issues of crucial importance," such as abortion and same-sex marriage. In a report issued last week, church leaders accused the nuns of promoting "radical feminist" ideas and challenging key teachings on homosexuality and male-only priesthood. We speak with Sister Simone Campbell, head of the Catholic social justice group NETWORK, which was harshly criticized in last week's report. Watch/Listen/Read

Election Judges, Alternate Judges, & Clerks Still Needed for Precinct Polling Locations needed in Collin County

The Democratic Party of Collin County needs Collin County Democrats to be election officials!

The County Party is responsible for running the May 29th Democratic Primary in Collin County, and we are in the process of recruiting presiding election judges, alternate judges, and election clerks. No prior experience is necessary, and mandatory training will be provided.  These are official positions as election workers, and you will be paid $8.00 per hour for your service.

This year, we will again have a large number of Democratic Primary Election Day polling locations in Collin County, but we need your help to provide the necessary people power for the process to work properly and provide voters with an efficient voting experience.

We have a special need for election officials that can speak at least some Spanish to assist Spanish-speaking citizens exercising their right to vote.

If you want to be a part of this, please email both Tonya Morman, our Democratic Primary Administrator, and Patricia McDade, our Deputy Primary Administrator, by sending a single email to elections@collindems.us   with your name, address (with street, city and zip code), and your phone number. You must be a registered voter in Collin County to serve as an election official in the county.

We will send you an official letter with your polling location address in May, and we will do our best to make sure that you will work in or near your precinct.

If you are interested in working for only a specified period of time or in a particular location outside of your immediate area, please let us know.  Please call us at 972.578.1483 if you have any questions.

Thank you for your interest in the success of the Democratic Party of Collin County!

Wasting our minds
Paul Krugman NY Times

In Spain, the unemployment rate among workers under 25 is more than 50 percent. In Ireland almost a third of the young are unemployed. Here in America, youth unemployment is "only" 16.5 percent, which is still terrible - but things could be worse.

And sure enough, many politicians are doing all they can to guarantee that things will, in fact, get worse. We've been hearing a lot about the war on women, which is real enough. But there's also a war on the young, which is just as real even if it's better disguised. And it's doing immense harm, not just to the young, but to the nation's future.

The Revisionaries documentary about Texas Board of Education and creationism

Clearly, our campaign against textbook censorship and for strong public schools is reaching a wider audience than ever before. And this comes in a year when all 15 seats on the state board are up for election. So take advantage of a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change the State Board of Education and get politics out of our public schools:

  • Sign TFN's pledge to change the SBOE.
  • Forward this email to friends and family and ask them to join our campaign.
  • Support our work by donating to the Texas Freedom Network today.

And if you need even more reason to take action, look no further than the appearance by Don McLeroy, the arch-creationist and former SBOE chairman also featured in "The Revisionaries," on Comedy Central's Colbert Report last night. Click here to see how host Stephen Colbert sums up efforts by McLeroy and other extremists on the SBOE to politicize public school classrooms: "reality by majority vote."

Help us ensure that public education in Texas is no longer the butt of national jokes and the subject of alarming documentaries.

You can find out more about the "The Revisionaries" here.
