Andrew Bacevich on Afghanistan War: "The President Lacks the Guts to Get Out"

Retired US Army colonel and historian Andrew Bacevich joins us for his first interview about his new book, Washington Rules: America's Path to Permanent War. "The question demands to be asked: Who is more deserving of contempt?" Bacevich asks. "The commander-in-chief who sends young Americans to die for a cause, however misguided, in which he sincerely believes? Or the commander-in-chief who sends young Americans to die for a cause in which he manifestly does not believe and yet refuses to forsake?"

Verizon & Google Enter Reported Deal for Tiered Internet Use, Is Net Neutrality in Jeopardy? *

The internet and telecom giants Verizon and Google have reportedly reached an agreement to impose a tiered system for accessing the internet. The deal would enable Verizon to charge for quicker access to online content over wireless devices, a violation of the concept of net neutrality that calls for equal access to all services. The deal comes amidst closed-door meetings between the Federal Communications Commission and major telecom giants on crafting new regulations.

"I Have No Regret to Anybody in the Military. This Is Clearly a Failure of Our Government"-Iraq War Vet Dan Choi Discharged Under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

"As we mark the end of America's combat mission in Iraq," President Barack Obama said this week, "a grateful America must pay tribute to all who served there." He should have added "unless you're gay," because, despite his rhetoric, weeks earlier the commander-in-chief fired one of those Iraq vets: Lt. Dan Choi. Choi is a West Point graduate, an Arabic linguist and an Iraq war veteran. He was fired under the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. We talk to him about his life, his coming out and his military service.

Environmental Activist Jerry Cope on "The Crime of the Century: What BP and US Government Don't Want You to Know"

Environmental activist Jerry Cope has spent the last few weeks traveling along the Gulf Coast and experiencing firsthand the contamination in the air and water. In an article being published on Huffington Post, Cope argues that instead of celebrating the allegedly vanishing oil, we should be concerned about the disappearance of marine life in the Gulf. He describes the Gulf as a "kill zone" and looks into where the marine animals have gone, given that BP has reported a relatively low number of dead animals from the spill.

Texas leaders threaten lawsuit over federal education fund provisions

Texas leaders threaten lawsuit over federal education fund provisions

In the latest round of the Texas vs. Washington political battle, the state's Republican leaders Thursday blasted a U.S. Senate-passed mandate on education funding in Texas, with Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst threatening legal action against the federal government if the House upholds the measure in a critical vote next week. The provision applies only to Texas and was crafted by Texas Democrats in Congress, who say they want to ensure that more than $800 million in federal education dollars earmarked for the state isn't diverted to other purposes.

Common Nonsense: Glenn Beck and the Triumph of Ignorance
By Alexander Zaitchik

Forget Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, and Sean Hannity-Glenn Beck is the Right's new media darling and the unofficial leader of the conservative grassroots. Lampooned by the Left and Lionized by the far Right, his bluster-and-tears brand of political commentary has commandeered attention on both sides of the aisle.
Glenn Beck has emerged over the last decade as a unique and bizarre conservative icon for the new century. He encourages his listeners to embrace a cynical paranoia that slides easily into a fantasyland filled with enemies that do not exist and solutions that are incoherent, at best. Since the election of President Barack Obama, Beck's bombastic, conspiratorial, and often viciously personal approach to political combat has made him one of the most controversial figures in the history of American broadcasting.
In Common Nonsense, investigative reporter Alexander Zaitchik explores Beck's strange brew of ratings lust, boundless ego, conspiratorial hard-right politics, and gimmicky morning-radio entertainment chops.

Separates the facts from the fiction, following Beck from his troubled childhood to his recent rise to the top of the conservative media heap

Zaitchik's recent three-part series in Salon caused so much buzz, Beck felt the need to attack it on his show

Based on Zaitchik's interviews with former Beck coworkers and review of countless Beck writings and television and radio shows

Explains why Beck is always crying, why he has so many conservative enemies, why he's driven by conspiracy theories, and why he's dangerous to the health of the republic

A contributing writer to Alternet, Zaitchik's reporting has appeared in the New Republic, the Nation, Salon, Wired, Reason, and the Believer

Beck, a perverse and high-impact media spectacle, has emerged as a leader in a conservative protest movement that raises troubling questions about the future of American politics.

COUNTDOWN TO ZERO traces the history of the atomic bomb from its origins to the present state of global affairs: nine nations possessing nuclear weapons capabilities with others racing to join them, with the world held in a delicate balance that could be shattered by an act of terrorism, failed diplomacy, or a simple accident. Written and directed by acclaimed documentarian Lucy Walker (The Devil's Playground, Blindsight), the film features an array of important international statesmen, including President Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, Pervez Musharraf and Tony Blair. It makes a compelling case for worldwide nuclear disarmament, an issue more topical than ever with the Obama administration working to revive this goal today. The film was produced by Academy Award® winner and recent nominee Lawrence Bender (Inglourious Basterds, An Inconvenient Truth) and developed, financed and executive produced by Participant Media, together with World Security Institute. Participant collaborated with Magnolia on last year's Food, Inc., recently nominated for an Academy Award®, and the upcoming CASINO JACK and the United States of Money. Jeff Skoll, Diane Weyermann, Bruce Blair and Matt Brown are the film's executive producers.

How to Lose an Election Without Really Trying- Frank Rich NYT

COULD George W. Bush be a kind of Gipper-in-reverse and win yet one more for the Democrats? Clearly this White House sees him as the gift that will keep on giving. The 2010 campaign against the Bush administration is in full cry, with President Obama leading the charge. The Republicans are "betting on amnesia," he confidently told the claque at a recent fund-raiser. "They don't have a single idea that's different from George Bush's ideas." It's now the incessant party line.
Sounds plausible, but it's Obama who's on the wrong side of that bet, to his own political peril.
Betting on amnesia is almost always a winning, not a losing, wager in America. Angry demonstrators at health care town-hall meetings didn't remember that Medicare is a government program, and fewer and fewer voters of both parties recall that the widely loathed TARP was a Bush administration creation supported by the G.O.P. Congressional leadership. So many Republicans don't know Obama is a natural citizen - 41 percent in a poll last week - that we must (charitably) assume some of them have forgotten that Hawaii was granted statehood. The G.O.P. chairman is sufficiently afflicted with amnesia that he matter-of-factly regaled an audience with the counterfactual observation that the war in Afghanistan, Bush's immediate response to 9/11, began under Obama.

Pilgrimage to New Kansas City Nuclear Bomb Plant

Pilgrimage to New Kansas City Nuclear Bomb Plant
Did you think that President Obama was taking steps to reduce nuclear weapons production? Then why did they just break ground to replace a bomb plant last week?

The fourth trip on the Nuclear Free World Pilgramage will be to the Kansas City Plant, which manufactures non-fissile parts that both Oak Ridge and Los Alamos (plutonium pit production) plants need. The KC Plant supplies 85 percent of each U.S.  nuke, including firing sets, aiming devices, security systems, and casings for the fissile material. The Federal Government, the City of KC and private investors broke ground last week for a new, replacement plant for the KC Plant. The Dallas group will leave early Aug. 14, participate in conference activities that evening and Aug. 15, and in the nonviolent direct action Aug. 16.

When: August 14-17

For more information or to register for the trip. call Mavis at 806-340-9358.

Obama in Dallas - STOP THE WAR in Afghanistan events!

President Obama will be flying into Dallas on Monday afternoon. Let's remind him and the public that elected him that there is no good war and that he and Congress should be working to bring the troops home from Afghanistan!  We cannot remain silent while precious lives and billions of dollars are being squandered!
How can we let Congress send $33 billion dollars to Afghanistan after we've learned that large amounts of US money are being funneled to Afghan warlords and corrupt officials? How can we throw $33 billion at a mistake when millions of Americans are losing their homes, their security?

also two Afghanistan veterans
will speak at a peaceful, nonviolent demonstration to call for the end to
wars in the Middle East.

When: 4:00 p.m., Monday, August 9, 2010

Where: main entrance, Dallas Love Field, Mockingbird Lane at Cedar Springs

The veterans will be in Dallas this week as part of "A Ride Till The End,"
a national bike tour to share their experiences and raise awareness about
the futility of the wars in the Middle East as well as the importance of
alternative transportation methods, including cycling, in preventing future
wars.

"We are going town to town, spreading this message face to face and we are
not stopping until both wars end," says Jacob George, a veteran of three
tours in Afghanistan. Writings by George and his fellow bikers can be found
at their blogsite, "Operation Awareness,"

Jim Hightower: Franken carries on in FDR fashion

Way to go, Al! At last, there's a Democrat in the Senate who's acting like a real Democrat in the FDR mold, unafraid and unabashed to go right at the corporate powers who dominate our economy, environment, media, politics and government.
Al Franken, the new Minnesota senator who won the seat once held by the fighting populist Paul Wellstone, is shaking up the Washington establishment on behalf of regular folks. Instead of going along to get along, Franken is speaking bluntly about the raw judicial activism and corporate obsequiousness of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice John Roberts, a lifelong servant of the corporate agenda.
For years, I've railed about the wimpiness of Democrats who approach every Supreme Court nomination strictly from the viewpoint of such social issues as abortion and gay rights. Of course those are important, but the Democrats have given nominees a free pass on the fundamental issue of steadily rising corporate supremacy. Most Supreme Court cases don't involve hot social issues, but questions of power between moneyed behemoths and the rest of us - things like polluting our water and air, denying basic worker rights, abusing consumers and usurping the people's governing authority.
