COUNTDOWN TO ZERO -Premier free passes

COUNTDOWN TO ZERO traces the history of the atomic bomb from its origins to the present state of global affairs: nine nations possessing nuclear weapons capabilities with others racing to join them, with the world held in a delicate balance that could be shattered by an act of terrorism, failed diplomacy, or a simple accident. Written and directed by acclaimed documentarian Lucy Walker (The Devil's Playground, Blindsight), the film features an array of important international statesmen, including President Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, Pervez Musharraf and Tony Blair. It makes a compelling case for worldwide nuclear disarmament, an issue more topical than ever with the Obama administration working to revive this goal today.

The film was produced by Academy Award® winner and recent nominee Lawrence Bender (Inglourious Basterds, An Inconvenient Truth) and developed, financed and executive produced by Participant Media, together with World Security Institute. Participant collaborated with Magnolia on last year's Food, Inc., recently nominated for an Academy Award®, and the upcoming CASINO JACK and the United States of Money. Jeff Skoll, Diane Weyermann, Bruce Blair and Matt Brown are the film's executive producers.

Nagasaki 65 Years Later: A Look Back at the Censored Dispatches of Pulitzer Prize-Winning Journalist George Weller

Today, we remember the US bombing of Nagasaki through the story of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist George Weller, the first reporter to enter Nagasaki, defying General MacArthur's ban on the press in southern Japan. Weller worked for the Chicago Daily News and hired a rowboat to get himself to Nagasaki. He wrote a 25,000-word report on the horrors that he encountered. When he submitted his story to the military censors, MacArthur personally ordered that the story be killed, and the manuscript was never returned. Weller later summarized his experience with the government censors, saying, "They won."

"I Fear for My Country": Muslim Leader Daisy Khan on Opposition to Ground Zero Mosque and Others Nationwide

Debate is intensifying over the planned construction of an Islamic center and mosque two blocks from New York's Ground Zero. But it is not just a local issue. Across the country, Muslim groups are facing attacks over plans to build new mosques. We speak to Daisy Khan of the American Society for Muslim Advancement, one of the main organizations behind the mosque project, and the wife of Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf; and Stephan Salisbury, cultural writer for the Philadelphia Inquirer and author of Mohamed's Ghosts: An American Story of Love and Fear in the Homeland.

Starred Review. Kingsolver's ambitious new novel, her first in nine years (after the The Poisonwood Bible), focuses on Harrison William Shepherd, the product of a divorced American father and a Mexican mother. After getting kicked out of his American military academy, Harrison spends his formative years in Mexico in the 1930s in the household of Diego Rivera; his wife, Frida Kahlo; and their houseguest, Leon Trotsky, who is hiding from Soviet assassins. After Trotsky is assassinated, Harrison returns to the U.S., settling down in Asheville, N.C., where he becomes an author of historical potboilers (e.g., Vassals of Majesty) and is later investigated as a possible subversive. Narrated in the form of letters, diary entries and newspaper clippings, the novel takes a while to get going, but once it does, it achieves a rare dramatic power that reaches its emotional peak when Harrison wittily and eloquently defends himself before the House Un-American Activities Committee (on the panel is a young Dick Nixon). Employed by the American imagination, is how one character describes Harrison, a term that could apply equally to Kingsolver as she masterfully resurrects a dark period in American history with the assured hand of a true literary artist.

Michael Moore Profits Up at GM! And You're Still Unemployed and more

So General Motors is back to making billions in profit. And if the past is any guide, we know what that means: time for some layoffs!
Or maybe not. Back in the '80s and '90s, when GM was consistently posting giant profits, they were simultaneously firing tens of thousands of workers in my hometown of Flint and across Michigan. Right now it looks like the only person being canned is CEO Edward Whitacre. (Only last week Whitacre was saying he wasn't planning to leave anytime soon-kind of ironic that the former president of the Boy Scouts of America failed to Be Prepared.)
But if they're not laying people off yet, they're also not hiring.

Preogressive Talk Radio News

Interview: Marc Maron
There aren't many comedians who've had as colourful a past as Marc Maron, but lucky for him he's able to turn those downs into a career. The 45-year-old usually bases his shows on his personal experiences. So has anything dramatic happened to Maron recently? "Well there was a divorce not so long ago, some aggressiveness, dating, new relationships, career changes, the pod-cast..." Anything else, I wonder? "Trying to get out of my head seems to be an everyday occurrence, so that's formed part of my comedy lately".

The American comic and radio show host has been doing a new show at the Soho Theatre, which he says is "filled with the normal themes of a Marc Maron show". What does that include? "Obsession, love, politics, technology. Just a buffet of my recent stand-up work." You wouldn't be wrong in thinking that it doesn't sound like the most cheerful show, but there are many people who appreciate Maron's stories. He reveals that he sometimes has stalkers visit him backstage to express how much they liked his show: "the best thing to do with a stalker is to take them for lunch or a cup of coffee." Yes, that does seem like the most logical and sure-fire way to get rid of a stalker...

By Robert Reich,

The decline of America's middle class can be charted directly. In the three decades after World War II, the median wage (smack in the middle) grew rapidly, right along with productivity gains. Even as late as 1980, the richest 1 percent of Americans received only about 9 percent of the nation's total income.
But starting in the 1980s - and increasingly since then - the economy has made the rich far richer without doing squat for the vast middle. The median hourly wage has barely grown, if you take inflation into account. Indeed, it dropped in the last so-called "recovery" between 2001 and 2007. And health-care and pension benefits have declined; we've gone from defined-benefit pensions to do-it-yourself pensions, while health insurance premiums, deductibles, and co-payments have skyrocketed.

Neil Durrance, candidate for U.S. Congress in Texas District 26, issued this statement

Neil Durrance, candidate for U.S. Congress in Texas District 26, issued this statement today regarding yesterday's stimulus vote from his opponent, Congressman Michael Burgess:

"It is unconsionable, at a time of teacher shortages and educators leaving the profession en masse, that Congressman Burgess    would vote against funding to pay teachers.

This awful vote against the interests of North Texas students is symptomatic of the Tea Party of No culture in which Congressman Burgess wallows in the misguided hope that he can use theatrics and rhetoric to hide from voters his pro-toll road, anti-working families voting record.

There aren't enough Lipton boxes in all of Texas to shield Burgess from the will of voters once he is exposed for what he is: a tool of big pharma, big oil, and corporate fat cats who has voted against North Texans at every opportunity."

If you would like any further information, pictures, or time with our candidate, please reply to this email or contact me at 940.239.0380.

Thanks,

Michael Durrance

Texas Gov. Perry asks Obama for more troops, drones along border

Texas Gov. Perry asks Obama for more troops, drones along border
Defying harsh criticism from Texas Republicans, President Barack Obama said Monday that his 19-month-old presidency has put America "on the right track" and warned against returning to GOP policies that he blamed for the country's economic "mess." Texas Gov. Rick Perry, one of the president's biggest critics in the Lone Star State, met Obama on his arrival at Austin-Bergstrom Airport and presented the president with a four-page letter calling for tougher federal enforcement along the state's violence-ridden border with Mexico.
