Secret Archive Gives Grim View of Afghan War

A six-year archive of classified military documents to be made public on Sunday offers an unvarnished, ground-level picture of the war in Afghanistan that is in many respects more grim than the official portrayal.

The secret documents, to be released by an organization called WikiLeaks, are a daily diary of an American-led force often starved for resources and attention as it struggled against an insurgency that grew larger, better coordinated and more deadly each year.
You can check them out here wikileaks.org

Thanks,
Nancy Cunningham

EPA Whistleblower Accuses Agency of Covering Up Effects of Dispersant in BP Oil Spill Cleanup

With BP having poured nearly two million gallons of the dispersant known as Corexit into the Gulf of Mexico, many lawmakers and advocacy groups say the Obama administration is not being candid about the lethal effects of dispersants. We speak with Hugh Kaufman, a senior policy analyst at the EPA's Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response and a leading critic of the decision to use Corexit.

Prosecutors Charge White Man for Racially Motivated Shooting in Post-Katrina New Orleans

Nearly five years after Hurricane Katrina, federal prosecutors have charged a white man with federal hate crimes for his role in the racially motivated shooting of three black men in the aftermath of the storm. The five-count indictment accuses Roland Bourgeois of plotting to defend his Algiers Point neighborhood in New Orleans from "outsiders" including African Americans and shooting and seriously wounding three men who were walking toward a temporary evacuation center.

9500 Liberty Documentary screening

With SB1070, the deplorable and illegal immigration law that has pushed Arizona into the national spot light, about to go into effect on July 29th, let us be reminded that our friends in the Hispanic community need urgent action now. The Republican Party of this State of Texas, in its own party platform, supports the adoption of a law similar to SB 1070 here in Texas.
The public needs to be educated about the effects SB1070 will have on business and law enforcement in Arizona. In this spirit, I am proud to present yet another screening of a nationally acclaimed documentary, 9500 Liberty.  The film tracks the effects a discriminatory and illegal law like SB1070 had on a local community in Virginia. Click here for the trailer.
The film has shown in select theaters across the country and now filmmaker Eric Byler is coming to Fort Worth to present his film at the Rose Marine Theater on the day of SB1070's implementation, July 29th. There is no better venue to present a documentary about a subject that so disproportionally affects the Hispanic community.
In addition to the screening, the event kicks off with a reception at 6pm and concludes with a panel discussion immediately following the film at 8:30pm. Linda Chavez-Thompson, candidate for Lieutenant Governor, will also be on hand to offer words of support. During the May Immigration Mega-Marches, Linda spoke at the march in Austin.
9500 Liberty & Panel Disussion

I'd like to thank each of the following panelists for offering to provide the audience with their unique perspective.

·    Moderator: Mercedes Olivera, Dallas Morning News Columnist
·    Eric Byler, Filmmaker
·    Daniel Segura, Fort Worth Police Department
·    Douglas Interiano, Coalition for Immigration Reform of DFW and North            Texas
·    Jennifer Cortez, University of Texas at Arlington Student

In addition, Linda Chavez-Thompson will make a guest appearance to share words of support.

Thursday, July 29th  /Reception: 6:00pm - 6:40pm
Film: 7:00pm /Panel Discussion: 8:30pm- 9:30pm

To Kill a Mockingbird: 50th Anniversary Edition
By Harper Lee

"To Kill a Mockingbird" at 50

Harper Lee's classic novel, much loved by generations of adolescents, parents, and (many) critics turns 50 today, and fans are meeting up around the country to stage birthday parties, readings, and even mock trials in its honor.
If you haven't read To Kill a Mockingbird, or haven't picked it up in a while, here's a quick refresher: Set in the fictional small town of Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s, it tells the story of Atticus Finch, a Southern lawyer who defends a black man falsely accused of raping a white woman. Despite the noble Finch's efforts, the man, Tom Robinson, is convicted by an all-white jury, whose members' racism is both virulent and unthinking. The tale is told through the adult eyes of Finch's daughter, Scout, who was six at the time of the events, and a parallel strand of the novel relates the fascination of Scout and her brother Jem with a mysterious neighbor, Boo Radley.

Scout, Atticus, and Boo: A Celebration of Fifty Years of To Kill a Mockingbird
By Mary McDonagh Murphy

List Price: $24.99
Price: $16.49 & eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping on orders over $25. BUY HERE
To mark the fiftieth anniversary of To Kill a Mockingbird, Mary McDonagh Murphy reviews its history and examines how the novel has left its mark on a broad range of novelists, historians, journalists, and artists.
In compelling interviews, Anna Quindlen, Tom Brokaw, Oprah Winfrey, James Patterson, James McBride, Scott Turow, Wally Lamb, Andrew Young, Richard Russo, Adriana Trigiani, Rick Bragg, Jon Meacham, Allan Gurganus, Diane McWhorter, Lee Smith, Rosanne Cash, and others reflect on when they first read the novel, what it means to them-then and now-and how it has affected their lives and careers. Scout, Atticus, and Boo: A Celebration of Fifty Years of "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a lively appreciation of the many ways in which the novel has made-and continues to make-a difference to generations of readers.
Harper Lee has not given an interview since 1964, but Murphy's reporting, research, and rare interviews with the author's sister and friends stitch together a brief history of how the novel, as well as the acclaimed 1962 movie, came to be.

There's a Battle Outside and It Is Still Ragin by Frank Rich NYT

THE glittering young blonde in a low-cut gown is sipping champagne in a swank Manhattan restaurant back in the day when things were still swank. She is on a first date with an advertising man as dashing as his name, Don Draper. So you don't really expect her to break the ice by talking about bad news. "The world is so dark right now," she says. "One of the boys killed in Mississippi, Andrew Goodman - he's from here. A girlfriend of mine knew him from summer camp." Her date is too busy studying her décolletage, so she fills in the dead air. "Is that what it takes to change things?" she asks. He ventures no answer.

Progressive Talker , Errington Thompson weighs in on Sherrod coverage on Rachel Maddow show

This may be just a personal thing. It may not translate to others, but I think Rachel Maddow is one of the best television news personalities in the last 20 years. Personally, I love smart women. I especially love smart women who don't mind letting you know that they are smart. Rachel is a geek. She knows she's a geek and she'll happily tell you that she is a geek. She is extremely well-educated in political science. It was her major in college.
On Wednesday night, Rachel Maddow had an extremely thoughtful piece on the Shirley Sherrod ordeal. She connected the right wing propaganda machine to several phony stories, including the ACORN story, the new Black Panther story and the smear campaign on Van Jones. Bill O'Reilly, in his typically bombastic way, could not let some minor, inconsequential journalist point out that Fox News does not really deliver the news. So, he took the time to point out that his ratings are bigger.
