Texas Board of Education to be headed by a homeschooler

The Texas Board of Education creates "policies and standards for Texas public schools." Gov. Greg Abbott's choice to head this body setting policies and standards for Texas public schools is a woman whose own children never attended those public schools-they were homeschooled and then sent to a private high school.

But hey, she's a former aide to the state's Republican lieutenant governor.

Hood County issues marriage license to same-sex couple after they filed federal lawsuit

Update at 9:44 a.m.: The Hood County Clerk's office has issued a marriage license to Jim Cato and Joe Stapleton - "handwritten on the same form they said they couldn't use last week," says Jan Soifer, the couple's attorney. But Cato and Stapleton aren't taking the document until they confer with Soifer, who says a statement is forthcoming. http://is.gd/289uL9

The Supreme Court and the Politics of Fear by

Linda Greenhouse NY Times

....I thought of Nixon last week as I watched the parade of Republican would-be presidents outdoing one another in denouncing the "lawless" and "brazen" Supreme Court. With its "hubris and thirst for power," the court threatens "the very foundations of our representative form of government," the most Nixonian of them all, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, warned.

The State's "Do-Nothing" DFW Air Plan is Falling Apart. Here's Our Chance to Have a Real One.

We can get new controls on major polluters of DFW air

Breaking News:The new deadline for the State's DFW Air Plan is now 2017 - instead of 2018

EPA agrees with us that the State's air plan for DFW is inadequate and unlikely to work without more cuts in pollution

EPA can reject the state's plan AND submit a federal plan of its own

Our Job: organizing support for EPA rejection of the state's plan and a better federal alternative

This is an opportunity to require new pollution controls on the Midlothian cement plants, East Texas Coal plants, and DFW gas compressors

For a blow-by blow explanation of the current situation, please read our new blog post here.
