Democratic Party of Collin County : Plano Balloon Festival

Have fun and help inform people about ACA !

Democratic Party of Collin County has a double booth at this year's Plano Balloon Festival -- an event that normally draws 100,000 or more attendees -- and we will have Democratic candidates with us throughout the festival.

If you'd like to be included as a volunteer or team captain during the Festival taking place next Friday, September 20th through Sunday September 22nd, please indicate your interest and for when you would like to volunteer by emailing us at balloonfest@collindems.us .  New at this year's festival, we have individual tickets and parking passes we can distribute ahead of time to our volunteers, making entry much easier!  Please include your postal address when you email that you would like to volunteer, so we may send you your ticket and parking pass.

For those of you that are deputy voter registrars, you are needed to help with our voter registration efforts, and we could always use those that have skills creating balloon animals for the kids as well!

At our booth this year, we will have information about the Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare"), and the enrollment in the exchanges that begins October 1st.  We are excited to help inform the public about this landmark healthcare law that local volunteers at the DPCC headquarters made countless calls to help get passed!

We will be setting up our booth on Friday during the day, leading up to the festival's beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, and we have volunteer shifts available through the weekend.

Email to sign up for a spot!

Just What Texas Needed: More Really Bad Doctors

Rick Perry was down in the Rio Grande Valley yesterday touting his sell-out to really bad doctors and really greedy insurance companies. He calls it tort reform, but what is really is should be called "If a drunk doctor amputates the wrong foot, you're just totally screwed. Hell, we'll probably make you pay him money and double your insurance rates because now you still have that other foot that needs amputating."

Ten years ago, we were promised lower insurance rates and better medical care with hot and cold running doctors if we just pass tort reform. So we did.

Select Driver License Offices Open Saturdays to Issue Election Identification Certificates

DPS will hold special Saturday hours at five Tarrant County DPS offices beginning this weekend through the November election to issue Election Identification Certificates (EICs) to voters who have no other forms of photo ID. These select offices will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. beginning September 14 through November 2, to allow residents to apply for EICs only. No other transactions will be conducted during Saturday business hours. In addition to the Saturday hours, applicants may apply for an EIC at all Texas driver license offices during regular business hours Monday - Friday.

Most residents already have an acceptable form of photo identification needed for voting and will not need or qualify for an EIC. If an applicant already has any of the following documents, they are not eligible to receive an EIC:

*             Texas driver license - unexpired or expired less than 60 days at the time of voting

*             Texas personal identification card - unexpired or expired less than 60 days at the time of voting

*             U.S. passport book or card - unexpired or expired less than 60 days at the time of voting

*             Texas concealed handgun license - unexpired or expired less than 60 days at the time of voting

*             U.S. Military identification with photo - unexpired or expired less than 60 days at the time of voting

*             U.S. Citizenship Certificate or Certificate of Naturalization with photo

To apply for an EIC, applicants must visit a driver license office and complete an Application for Texas Election Certificate (DL-14C).

For more information on the requirements, exemptions and process for obtaining an EIC, please visit: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/DriverLicense/electionID.htm.

Rich Man's Recovery

By PAUL KRUGMAN

A few days ago, The Times published a report on a society that is being undermined by extreme inequality. This society claims to reward the best and brightest regardless of family background. In practice, however, the children of the wealthy benefit from opportunities and connections unavailable to children of the middle and working classes. And it was clear from the article that the gap between the society's meritocratic ideology and its increasingly oligarchic reality is having a deeply demoralizing effect.

The Best Map Ever Made of America's Racial Segregation

DFW Map

Last year, a pair of researchers from Duke University published a report with a bold title: "The End of the Segregated Century." U.S. cities, the authors concluded, were less segregated in 2012 than they had been at any point since 1910. But less segregated does not necessarily mean integrated-something this incredible map makes clear in vivd color.
