North Texas Progressive Newsletter
...bringing North Texas news and discussion since 2004

September 9 ,  2013

Dear nancy,

Good Afternoon!

Whew -- this is one of the best newsletters in a long time - just so much going on right now ! Two fantastic screenings you can attend, have a cocktail or a beer with a fellow liberal and attend some of the fantastic Democratic group events !

Check out the great videos and photos of actions by ocal Walmart workers and anti -war protestors.
Remember --just because YOU NEVER see it on local media doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I almost always am Tweeting about local actions,  so follow @NTXProgressive and send me a tweet or an email about your events and I will help you get the word out !

Make sure you get The Wonk Gap ( Krugman article ) around,  so many of your friends and neighbors listen to Republicans and they really have no idea what will be available to them and their families on Oct 1st so you will have to educate them about Obamacare ( ACA) !

Make sure I know what your groups are doing ! If you have advertising budget make sure you support this newsletter with a $20 donation !

Thanks,
Nancy Cunningham

For the usually pro-military North Texas lawmakers in Congress, the prospect of a U.S. strike in Syria to punish the Assad regime for allegedly using chemical weapons against its own citizens is a very hard sell.

They are largely lining up against a strike in Syria, some vehemently so, as the six U.S. House members who represent portions of Tarrant County and the state's two senators consider looming congressional votes.

How safe are we? What do we sacrifice to feel safe? And who pays the ultimate price?

Two Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists examine one of the most sensitive post-9/11 national security investigations-a breathtaking race to prevent an al-Qaeda bomber from launching Osama bin Laden's final attack on American soil.

In Enemies Within, Matt Apuzzo and Adam Goldman lay bare the complex and often contradictory state of counterterrorism and intelligence in America through the pursuit of Najibullah Zazi, a terrorist bomber who trained under one of bin Laden's most trusted deputies. Zazi and his coconspirators represented America's greatest fear: a terrorist cell operating inside America.

The nationwide day of protests at 15 cities across the country, including Dallas, is being billed by organizers as the largest since Black Friday in November, when several thousand people turned out at Wal-Mart stores to demand better pay and better jobs.

The Wonk Gap
by Paul Krugman NY Times

On Saturday, Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming delivered the weekly Republican address. He ignored Syria, presumably because his party is deeply conflicted on the issue. (For the record, so am I.) Instead, he demanded repeal of the Affordable Care Act. "The health care law," he declared, "has proven to be unpopular, unworkable and unaffordable," and he predicted "sticker shock" in the months ahead.

So, another week, another denunciation of Obamacare. Who cares? But Mr. Barrasso's remarks were actually interesting, although not in the way he intended. You see, all the recent news on health costs has been good. So Mr. Barrasso is predicting sticker shock precisely when serious fears of such a shock are fading fast. Why would he do that?
