Justice Department, Texas Face Off In Court Over Voter ID Law

The Justice Department and the state of Texas faced off at trial Monday over the state's new voter identification law, which the Obama administration claims violates the federal Voting Rights Act.

In opening arguments before a three-judge panel in federal district court in Washington, D.C., a lawyer for Texas argued that the photo ID requirement was intended to limit voter fraud, not to curb turnout of legally registered voters.  read on NPR

Colbert-ese: Northwestern University Researchers Develop Language Based On Stephen Colbert

Truthiness. Freem. Wordinistas. These are just a few of the words coined by Stephen Colbert since The Colbert Report debuted on Comedy Central in 2005. Colbert has used the power of his audience to spread his cultural influence far and wide, even in Hungary, and Colbert has even attracted the attention of the academic world. Now researchers at Northwestern University have developed a whole new language based on the Colbert character's style of speaking for some linguistic studies.

As Romney Evades on Tax Returns, New Report Reveals Loopholes, Offshore Havens Behind His Fortune

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney is on the hot seat over where he stashes his vast personal fortune, estimated at up to $250 million. We speak with reporter Nick Shaxson, whose new Vanity Fair article, "Where the Money Lives," delves into the murky world of offshore finance and reveals loopholes that allowed Romney to skirt tax laws and store millions in foreign tax havens. The article has sparked the latest round of questions about Romney's taxes and offshore accounts, amplified by Romney's refusal so far to release more than one year's worth of tax returns. Texas, Justice Dept. Square Off over Voter ID Law as Part of Dispute That Could Decide 2012 Election

The Justice Department and the Texas legislature are squaring off in court today over the state's controversial voter ID law. The law requires voters to show photo identification at the polls, and Texas hopes to implement it before the November election. The DOJ blocked Texas' voter ID law in March, saying it will disenfranchise at least 600,000 voters - a disproportionate number of which are Latinos and other minority groups. Currently, 16 states have passed restrictive voting laws that have the potential to impact the 2012 election, including vital swing states such as Florida and Pennsylvania. We speak with Robert Notzon, the legal redress chair for the Texas State Conference of the NAACP and co-counsel in a lawsuit challenging Texas' voter ID law; and Ari Berman, who covers voting rights for The Nation and Rolling Stone magazines. Holding Glenn Beck's Mercury One charity accountable

Author and entertainer Glenn Beck brings his circus to Arlington on July 28.

Fine.

Just don't fib about it.

He says his Cowboys Stadium event will be a charity evening of "reflection" and inspiration.

But don't ask questions about the "charity."

Beck's event is named Restoring Love. It's a three-day Beckfest of revivals, Tea Party rallies and publicity stunts, all to restore the American spirit while also reviving love and attention for Beck, his books and his $40-million-a-year publishing and webcast empire.

Officially, the event raises money for Beck's cause, Mercury One.

According to records, Mercury One was founded eight months ago in New York and now operates from a Dallas postal box.

Product Description

A powerful and original argument that traces the roots of our present crisis of authority to an unlikely source: the meritocracy.

Over the past decade, Americans watched in bafflement and rage as one institution after another -  from Wall Street to Congress, the Catholic Church to corporate America, even Major League Baseball - imploded under the weight of corruption and incompetence. In the wake of the Fail Decade, Americans have historically low levels of trust in their institutions; the social contract between ordinary citizens and elites lies in tatters.

Think we need an amendment to roll back Citizen's United ? Here's how : The Article V Convention to Propose Constitutional Amendments

The Article V Convention to Propose Constitutional Amendments: Contemporary Issues for Congress

CRS - The Article V Convention to Propose Constitutional Amendments: Contemporary Issues for Congress, Thomas H. Neale, Specialist in American National Government, July 9, 2012

*             After three decades of inactivity, various contemporary developments could contribute to a renewal of congressional interest in the Article V Convention alternative. The emergence of Internet and social media-driven public policy and issue campaigns has combined with renewed interest in specific constitutional amendments, and the Article V Convention procedure in general, as a means of bypassing perceived policy deadlock at the federal level. The Tea Party Movement, MoveOn.org, and Occupy Wall Street are cited as technology-driven issue advocacy groups that could provide a model for convention advocates. The Article V Convention concept enjoys support from several advocacy groups, and has been the subject of a recent academic conference and a range of "op-ed" articles publicizing the once-obscure alternative."

Policy and the Personal
By PAUL KRUGMAN

A lot of people inside the Beltway are tut-tutting about the recent campaign focus on Mitt Romney's personal history - his record of profiting even as workers suffered, his mysterious was-he-or-wasn't-he role at Bain Capital after 1999, his equally mysterious refusal to release any tax returns from before 2010. Some of the tut-tutters are upset at any suggestion that this election is about the rich versus the rest. Others decry the personalization: why can't we just discuss policy?

And neither group is living in the real world.

First of all, this election really is - in substantive, policy terms - about the rich versus the rest.

Tell Perry to say 'yes' to funds to help Texas uninsured

Did you see Rick Perry's interview on Fox News? He had the nerve to say that every Texan has access to health care when 1 in 4 Texans are currently uninsured. Either Perry doesn't know there is a problem or he doesn't care. The Affordable Care Act could fix this problem immediately. We need your help telling Rick Perry that Texans deserve quality, affordable health care.

If you haven't already, sign our petition telling our state leaders to stop making excuses and start working to provide health care to Texas. If you have signed the petition, now is the time to share it with friends and family.

Then, call Governor Perry using this toll free number - 1-888-530-9422 - and tell him to "stop planning for failure and use Texas taxpayer funds to help the millions of uninsured Texans and not other states like Massachusetts."

Rick Perry and conservatives in Texas are playing politics with people's lives. They aren't offering any solutions to real problems and are going on national television saying nothing is wrong. You can't fix a problem you are completely ignoring. Let's make our voice heard and make it impossible for him to ignore us. Your calls make a difference. We will make sure when you sign our petitions, it makes a difference. Let's fight for the 25% of Texans who do not have insurance and that our Governor chooses to ignore.
