Jim Hightower: If You Put $100 Million Into a Race, Don't You Get Naming Rights for the Candidate?

The Texas populist talks about our out-of-control plutocracy.

"Populism" can be defined in a number of different ways - conceptually, it's viewed quite differently by scholars, politicians and the media. But progressive champion Jim Hightower, author of The Hightower Lowdown, cuts to the chase in his inimitable Texas style. For him, populism is simply an analysis of how money intersects with, and distorts our politics.

Hightower's been keeping the plutocrats' feet to the fire for a long time now, but he doesn't recall a time when our elites were so brazen in their entitlement, so predacious in their quest for ever more power over our economy and society.

Park Cities/Central Dallas Democrats: Short forum for runoff candidates and planning for action!

Our July 7th meeting will be a double program. First, we will have a 30-minute forum with the two runoff candidates for judge of the 162nd Civil District Court, Phyllis Lister Brown and Maricela Moore. The questions for the forum will come from YOU, the audience. You might want to write your questions ahead of time to increase the chances of yours being used. Please put your name on the paper or card with your question.

The second part of the meeting will be a presentation by PCCDD officers and campaign representatives on the ways our club will help two candidates between now and November 6th. We are going to devote our time and resources to Robert Miklos' campaign for State Representative in House District 107 and to Katherine McGovern's campaign for U.S. House District 32.

Date: Saturday, July 7th /Time: 10:30 am to noon /Place: Oak Lawn Branch Library, 4100 Cedar Springs Road

Dallas NAACP wants to shut down Texas lottery

Dallas NAACP wants to shut down Texas lottery

The Dallas NAACP chapter wants the Texas lottery to close up shop. Members of the nation's oldest civil-rights group say they are frustrated by poor and minority Texans spending their money on tickets instead of necessities such as rent or health insurance, and they believe that the lottery isn't putting enough money into public education in the state.

 Organizer's Guide to Election Administration

The Organizer's Guide to Election Administration gives you all the info you've been desperately searching for along with rules you didn't even know you needed to know about. Most importantly to us, every piece of information is sourced and dated, so you know exactly how fresh it is and can trace it back to verify its accuracy.

Take a look around, and you'll recognize election administration rules that you love to hate (don't worry, Arizona organizers, the proof of citizenship requirement is inside). You also might start to think about new ways in which election administration can affect your work, like voter challenges at the polling place. And hopefully, our information will help you easily reach out to voters with special needs, like military voters, people with felony convictions, or people who need assistance in the voting booth.

Robert Reich: Mitt Romney and the New Gilded Age

The election of 2012 raises two perplexing questions. The first is how the GOP could put up someone for president who so brazenly epitomizes the excesses of casino capitalism that have nearly destroyed the economy and overwhelmed our democracy. The second is why the Democrats have failed to point this out. The White House has criticized Mitt Romney for his years at the helm of Bain Capital, pointing to a deal that led to the bankruptcy of GS Technologies, a Bain investment in Kansas City that
