Memorial Day 2012: President Obama Offers Prayer for Peace

Our Nation endures and thrives because of the devotion of our men and women in uniform, who, from generation to generation, carry a burden heavier than any we may ever know.

On Memorial Day, we honor those who have borne conflict's greatest cost, mourn where the wounds of war are fresh, and pray for a just, lasting peace. The American fabric is stitched with the stories of sons and daughters who gave their lives in service to the country they loved.

Memorial Day Cookout - Today, Monday, May 28th

To finish up the holiday weekend this evening, you are welcome to attend the 3rd Annual DPCC Memorial Day Cookout, which will be held at the Harrington Park Pavilion at 401 W. 16th Street, next to the Plano Senior Recreation Center (just west of N. Central Expressway on 16th Street just north of Outback Steakhouse & Spaghetti Warehouse).

We will cook burgers and hot dogs and sausage that will be provided (with some veggie dogs & burgers, too), and we'll also have fixin's and condiments, water & sodas.   Though not required, you are welcome to bring a side dish, chips, or dessert.  This is a family event, and we will have horseshoes, frisbees, and an updated version of lawn darts. Donations to cover costs are welcome, but are not required.

Come one and come all as we fellowship, have fun, while also remembering those that have sacrificed on our behalf!

Organizing For America (OFA) will hold a Memorial Day Phone Bank, Monday--May 28th, from 6:00 pm until 8:30 pm, at the Dallas County Democratic Party Headquarters (4209 Parry Avenue, Dallas, TX 75223). This will be a time when we call fellow Texans to remind them to vote the next day, May 29th, in the Democratic Party Primary Election.

Have a wonderful holiday weekend. Please contact Emma Nelson with any questions, comments, or suggestions at (972) 351-0907. I know your time is valuable. Thanks again for committing some of it to help re-elect President Obama this November!

Carry the Load Dallas 2012 helps people celebrate a meaningful Memorial Day by organizing and conducting a 20-hour event that honors and thanks veteran and active duty members of the military, law enforcement officers, firefighters and their families for their sacrifices; and, through the event participation and sponsorship, raises money to support nonprofit organizations that serve these heroes.

Join us May 27, 2012 and Memorial Day, May 28 for a life-changing journey for people as they walk or run as long or as little as they can in the 20-hour period . . . Like the service members they honor, they carry more than they have to, longer than they think they can.

Each participant is encouraged to make a donation to help the wounded and the families of the fallen. This year, we'll show our commitment by working in teams and as individuals to "carry the load" for 20 hours and 12 minutes. Some will choose to carry weighted packs as a symbol of their commitment. It's a challenge to carry the load for others, to carry more than you think you can, further than you think you can.

Go to CarryTheLoad.org/Dallas to register to participate, volunteer or make a donation today!

Vote  Tuesday!

Dallas: NOTE: voter turnout has been extremely low this year. This means that your vote counts for even more than usual.

Early Voting for the 2012 Democratic Primary will continue through this Friday, May 25. A list of the days, times, and locations for primary early voting is at this page. If you don't vote early, then you can vote in your local precinct's polling place on Tuesday, May 29, from 7 AM to 7 PM. Note that because of expected low turnout, some locations may have to be combined for that Tuesday, so check your precinct's polling place at this page.

You can see a sample primary ballot at this page. The News voter guide for the primary is at this page. I have not found any League of Women Voters Guide for the primary online. The DCDP has posted a list of primary candidates at this page. It includes websites for all those who have sent them to us, with some obvious omissions. Those not listed there yet even include Barack Obama for President, though this Roundup has linked to him many times, including this one.

Please remember: this year there will NOT be any Precinct Conventions on that Tuesday evening following the Primary Election. Those were held at the Senatorial District Conventions. Once again, thank our Repugnant legislative majority for passing illegal redistricting bills that resulted in all this confusion.

Tarrant County

You can find your voting location online here. Polls reopen 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., Election Day, Tuesday, May 29.

Collin County

2012 Texas Democratic Primary Election Day

Tuesday, May 29th

Polls Open 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Please Note: You Must Vote at Your Assigned Polling Location on Election Day

Primary Election Day, the Promesa Project

In these final days before the Primary Election Day, the Promesa Project is testing an amazing new online tool with the potential to be a game changer in Texas.

The tool matches a target universe in our voter file to a user's Facebook friend list. Once a certain number of friends are matched, users will be able to either call their friends or contact them via Facebook. The list can be updated every day to remove people who have already voted.

Texas' size, population and incredibly expensive media markets make it arguably the most difficult state in the U.S. to campaign in. While we know that there will never be a substitute for person-to-person grassroots engagement, it's not hard to imagine the implications of a tool like this.  It enables that same type of conversation to happen online between a trusted messenger and a targeted voter.

If this sounds like something you'd like to support, you can make a contribution by clicking here.

The tool is currently up and running, and the Promesa Project is the only campaign with access to this tool until after the Primary. Our Promesa Project Fellows are using it to organize Social Media GOTV Banks where they're training others to use it.

All of the activity is geared towards generating data that will help every Democratic Candidate in the General Election. First, our Fellows are getting young Latinos to give their Promesa that they will vote Democratic and talk to their family and friends about voting Democratic. And second, they're turning out young Latinos with no previous primary voting history by asking them to support the DREAM Act referendum on the primary ballot.

Romney's "special adviser" on education mired in an ugly scandal over Houston's dropout rate

With President Barack Obama on a tear in recent weeks to keep interest rates on college loans low-an issue that plays well with young voters-Mitt Romney, the presumptive GOP nominee, on Tuesday unveiled his Education Policy Advisory Group. It features at least ten education experts who served during the George W. Bush administration, most notably Rod Paige, who was education secretary during Bush's first term. The short bio of Paige released by the Romney campaign states that he once was superintendent of Houston's schools. But it fails to mention that Paige, once he was in Bush's cabinet, became mired in an ugly scandal, when the news broke that the Houston school system, the seventh largest in the nation, had falsified its dropout stats during Paige's tenure.
