This is how this newsletter funds itself. We never turn away any progressive groups if they want to announce an event but cannot pay to sponsor an ad. This is how you can support local progressive / Democratic media and this newsletter and WIN PRIZES !

This year we have increased our membership, begun tweeting and promoting progressive events using Twitter and blogged the Occupy Dallas movement.

You can donate using Paypal here You can also mail me a check email me and I will send you the address.

Clean Elections Texas - Special guest talking about activism

Saturday, February 18, 2012, 4:00 PM

Spring Creek Barbeque

270 N Central Expy, Richardson, TX (map)

Come meet CETex board member from San Antonio, Nick Lee. Nick is also the organizer for Clean Elections Texas-San Antonio.

We are going to talk about getting the word out about public funding of elections during the upcoming primary season (which may be really long!) and leading up to introducing public funding legislation for our legislative session in 2013. It seems far away, but we need to start now! We want your suggestions and opinions as we begin to sketch out our strategy for the next year.

Let's talk about introducing candidates and elected to the idea of conducting a campaign season without the need of "dialing for dollars" and of being in office without a funding "monkey" on your back. It's being done in other cities and states. Why not Texas?

Come and bring a friend!

Apple, Accustomed to Profits and Praise, Faces Outcry for Labor Practices at Chinese Factories

Protesters visited a half-dozen Apple stores around the world to deliver petitions calling for reforms in the working conditions at factories run by Apple's suppliers in China. The protests come on the heels of recent revelations of harsh conditions and onerous work environments at Apple's controversial Chinese supplier Foxconn, where more than a dozen employees have committed suicide. We're joined by New York Times reporter Charles Duhigg, who helped break the story about the human costs of Apple products for workers in China. We're also joined by Mike Daisey, whose acclaimed one-man show, The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs, is based partly on his visits to Apple's Chinese factories and his interviews with the workers there. As Contraceptives Rule Enters GOP Race, Will Reproductive Rights Affect 2012 Election?

Rick Santorum's three-state victory comes after a week of heavy Republican campaigning against a new Obama administration rule requiring health insurance plans, including those provided by Catholic-affiliated hospitals and universities, to offer free birth control methods. Reproductive rights groups have hailed the measure, which was fueled by research showing birth control is necessary for women's health and well-being. The row over contraceptives comes as a top official at the breast cancer charity Komen has resigned after a controversial decision to defund Planned Parenthood backfires. We look at how reproductive rights could become major issues in the 2012 race with three guests: Michael Brendan Dougherty of Business Insider and The American Conservative, Loretta Ross of the SisterSong Reproductive Justice Collective, and Jon O'Brien of Catholics for Choice. West Memphis 3: Freed Death Row Prisoner Makes Film about 18-Year Battle to Prove His Innocence

We turn now to the case of the West Memphis Three, the young men in West Memphis, Arkansas, who were imprisoned for the 1993 slayings of three eight-year-old boys after an investigation largely fueled by unsubstantiated rumors of a Satanic ritual. The new documentary, West of Memphis, was co-produced by none other than one of the convicted youths at the heart of the story, Damien Echols. Echols and his two co-defendants were released last August after spending nearly two decades in prison, all the while proclaiming their innocence. Democracy Now! recently spoke with Echols in a rare extended interview at the Sundance Film Festival. We also spoke to Echols's wife, Lorri Davis, and the film's director, Amy Berg. Michelle Obama, 'Top Chef' stars take health message to Dallas kids

First lady Michelle Obama brought her anti-obesity message to southeast Dallas on Friday, complete with cheering students, past Top Chef contestants and Dallas Cowboys players.

Obama's visit to the Kleberg/Rylie Recreation Center was part cooking contest and part pep rally. She's on a three-day nationwide tour to mark the second anniversary of her Let's Move initiative, which focuses on childhood obesity.

The program has various components, including one in which Dallas ISD's standout status was the draw for the first lady's stop in Dallas.

Crashing the Gates: How a Handful of Progressive Activists Brought Liberal Talk-Radio Back to the Nation's Capitol

The District of Columbia, Gallup tells us, is the most progressive region in the country - 40 percent of those living in the nation's capitol identify themselves as liberals. It's got a commanding lead - Massachusetts is the only state to hit the 30 percent mark.

But if you're stuck in traffic on the infamous Beltway and want to tune into some political talk, you've only had the option of listening to right-wing bloviators like Limbaugh and Hannity. Since Air America Radio's demise in 2009, Washington has been without a liberal alternative to right-wing hate-radio.

At MSNBC, a Professor as TV Host

Week seven of Melissa Harris-Perry's introductory course in African-American studies at Tulane University includes a lecture about "the hollow prize" - a theory that African-Americans tend to be elected as mayor only after a city has tipped into economic decline.

One day last summer, when Ms. Harris-Perry was filling in for Rachel Maddow on MSNBC, she recast the class lecture as a television segment, invoking Detroit; her adopted home, New Orleans; President Obama; and tax policy.

"I've given that lecture a million times - a million times," Ms. Harris-Perry said in a recent interview. "But I do it once on Rachel's show, and it was everywhere the next day. It was up on Web sites, people were e-mailing me - that, for me, was a really clear indication of how powerful television is.

Paul Quinn College turns a football field into a farm to end a food desert.

The football games ended years ago at Paul Quinn College. The Tigers' purple jerseys were packed away, marking the conclusion of a tradition that dated back almost a century. In 2006, the football program was canceled to save money as enrollment declined and financial troubles mounted at the private, Christian, historically black college in Dallas.

Then, in 2010, Michael Sorrell, president of Paul Quinn, had an idea for transforming the struggling college and, at the same time, helping the surrounding community of Highland Hills: Convert the idle football field into an organic farm. The goal was to provide healthy food to a low-income community that has no supermarket. Today Paul Quinn sells produce from the farm to restaurants and to Cowboys Stadium, and offers fresh produce to residents of its South Dallas neighborhood. In the process, students are learning to be stewards of their community.

Severe Conservative Syndrome

By PAUL KRUGMAN NYTimes

Mitt Romney has a gift for words - self-destructive words. On Friday he did it again, telling the Conservative Political Action Conference that he was a "severely conservative governor."

As Molly Ball of The Atlantic pointed out, Mr. Romney "described conservatism as if it were a disease." Indeed. Mark Liberman, a linguistics professor at the University of Pennsylvania, provided a list of words that most commonly follow the adverb "severely"; the top five, in frequency of use, are disabled, depressed, ill, limited and injured.
