(If you can't make the 3-5pm rail-ride, come join us between 5 and 6 at the Mockingbird bridge!)For full details and updates and to RSVP, go to the Facebook event page: http://www.facebook.com/events/232075010202412/

Turn the NDAA into the N-ational D-ay of A-ction A-gainst Guantanamo and indefinite detention! Join us on Wednesday, January 11 to Occupy the DART rails (and a few spots along the way) for some street theater in solidarity with a broad coalition of groups across the nation.

DALLAS - In observance of the 10th year anniversary of the first detainees at Guantánamo, Dallas peace and justice activists will be riding the DART trains and walking to several locations in Dallas while dressed as prisoners. The purpose of the demonstration is to call on the Obama administration to finally put an end to unlawful detentions at Guantánamo, to call for the arrest of Bush Administration officials for war crimes including torture, and to remind the public that people are still in prison without a trial.

The group will board the DART train at Mockingbird Station at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11, ride to the Akard stop and disembark. Then they will process down Akard Street to Commerce, turn west and walk past the Earl Cabell Federal Building. At 4:00 p.m., Dallas human rights leaders will make statements to the public. Then the group will proceed up Griffin St. and west on Pacific to the Rosa Parks Plaza. They will pause there to pay tribute Parks' and Martin Luther King's call for justice, and will then board the DART train at the West End stop and return to Mockingbird Station. From there, joined by others at 5:00 p.m., the group will march to the Mockingbird bridge over Central Expressway and demonstrate there, in the shadow of the Bush Institue, until sundown.

This event is just one of thousands that will be carried out throughout the United States including a rally in front of the White House where activists will make a human chain to the Capitol, representing detainees at Guantánamo.

This peaceful, nonviolent demonstration is endorsed by the Dallas Peace Center, Code Pink Greater Dallas, Amnesty International Group 205, Bill of Rights Defense Committee - Dallas, Pax Christi - Dallas, North Texas Veterans for Peace, and DFW99%.

Deportation of U.S. Teen to Colombia Latest Failure of Immigration System

The family of a Dallas teenager Jakadrien Turner is demanding answers after she was deported to Colombia, despite the fact that she is a U.S. citizen and speaks no Spanish. Turner, a 15-year-old African-American runaway, was living in Houston when she was arrested for shoplifting and gave police a fake name that belonged to a 22-year-old undocumented immigrant from Colombia with warrants for her arrest. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) reportedly discovered Turner's fingerprints did not match those of the Colombian national, but deported her anyway. We speak with Ralph Isenberg, a Dallas businessman who has become an advocate for immigrants; Dallas Reverend Peter Johnson, a longtime civil rights advocate who has worked with the Turner family; and Jacqueline Stevens, a political science professor at Northwestern University who recently published an exhaustive report on U.S. citizens who have been detained and deported. Buddy Roemer: GOP Pres. Candidate Who Backs Occupy, Campaign Finance Reform, Excluded from Debates

We speak with Buddy Roemer, a candidate who is on the Republican ballot in New Hampshire but has not been invited to this weekend's two Republican debates-or any of the past 16 debates-even though he is a former governor of Louisiana and four-term member of Congress. Roemer's campaign is unusual in the Republican field: He has refused to accept campaign contributions more than $100, rejected all donations from political action committees, and has made campaign finance the key plank in his platform. He has also endorsed the Occupy Wall Street movement. Watch/Listen/Read

Defying GOP and Eying Re-Election, Obama Makes Bold Recess Pick of Cordray for Consumer Bureau

President Obama has defied Congress by installing former Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray as the country's first head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, established to protect citizens against the practices of Wall Street banks and lenders. Obama's move defied Republicans, who have refused to allow Cordray's confirmation after failing to stop the bureau's creation in 2010. We speak with Robert Weissman, president of Public Citizen, which supports Obama's appointment. Watch/Listen/Read

As States Take on Citizens United, Lawrence Lessig Offers Bold Plan to Get Money Out of Politics

California and New York City lawmakers are introducing measures today calling for a constitutional amendment overturning Citizens United, the controversial 2010 Supreme Court ruling that characterizes political spending as free speech and opened the floodgates for unlimited corporate spending on election campaigns. Similar measures have passed in Los Angeles, Oakland, Albany and Boulder. We speak with Harvard Law School Professor Lawrence Lessig, author of a new book that examines how money buys results in Congress and fuels campaigns that put the powerful in office. Lessig argues that both Democrats and Republicans suffer from the undue influence of corporate lobbying and unlimited campaign financing, and lays out a strategy to fight it, including a call for a constitutional convention that could propose an amendment for publicly funded elections. "Pity the Billionaire": Thomas Frank on the "Unlikely Comeback of the Right" Ahead of Iowa Caucus

Bestselling author and Harper's Magazine columnist Thomas Frank argues that as President Barack Obama fails to provide a coherent, progressive economic alternative, the right has staged an unlikely comeback - despite the ongoing fallout from the 2008 financial crisis for which its trademark policies were largely responsible. Frank's new book is called Pity the Billionaire: The Hard-Times Swindle and the Unlikely Comeback of the Right. We also speak with The Nation correspondent John Nichols about the Occupy movement in Iowa.  Watch/Listen/Read

On the air-Nevada progressives to launch a radio station

rockwall

Bob Fulkerson, executive director of the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada (PLAN), has long been an advocate of reviving the federal "fairness" doctrine, a policy that allows federal regulators to police the content of broadcasting and require broadcasters to provide time for certain points of view.

Now, Fulkerson may have found a more direct way to get a different viewpoint on the air. PLAN has been granted a radio station broadcasting license by the Federal Communications Commission.

The development could put a different point of view on the air in a field mostly dominated by conservative talk.

"We have three years to go on the air. ... We're going to talk to the folks at KVMR in Nevada City [Calif.] in January to see how they've been able to do successful community radio," Fulkerson said. "I was thinking of calling it Radio Free Nevada but then realized the young folk wouldn't get the metaphor."

America's Unlevel Field

NY Times

By PAUL KRUGMAN

rockwall

Last month President Obama gave a speech invoking the spirit of Teddy Roosevelt on behalf of progressive ideals - and Republicans were not happy. Mitt Romney, in particular, insisted that where Roosevelt believed that "government should level the playing field to create equal opportunities," Mr. Obama believes that "government should create equal outcomes," that we should have a society where "everyone receives the same or similar rewards, regardless of education, effort and willingness to take risk."

Portrait of (and podcast with) an artist entrepreneur: Marc Maron

rockwall

If you are a comedy nerd, chances are you have already listened to Marc Maron's podcast, WTF with Marc Maron. If you haven't, I suggest you do, but not just because Maron uses the podcast to settle old feuds, bare souls and, of course, talk comedy with some of the biggest comedic voices of the past quarter century.

That all makes for great listening, but the real reason Maron's podcast deserves a listen from digital media and technology execs is because it shows how someone like Maron, who was "in a compromised position and a little desperate" when his terrestrial radio show was canceled by Air America, has been able to resurrect and build a career through the power of Internet distribution and community, as with an increasing number of other artist-entrepreneurs.

Some Rick Perry for you ...

Rick Perry Shows His Ass, Hires Joe Arpaio

Way back when, during his first debate appearance, Gov. Rick Perry said something to the effect that you would have to be heartless to discriminate against a kid who was applying to enter the Texas university system just because their parents brought them into the country illegally. This created an instant "not-hating-Latinos-for-Jesus-enough" problem for Perry, and his poll numbers dropped like a stone. So far, aided by actual debate gaffes, his numbers have not recovered. So, how about a bold move that says fuck-you to the Latino community louder than anything else could?

While Rick Perry Wages Doomed Campaign, 'Obscure' State Senator Runs Texas

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) has diverted his attention from his state to run for president, even as Texas suffers a debilitating drought, historic wildfires, and slumping economy. "Perry-alone among the Republican candidates-has a moral obligation to govern," Richard Parker wrote in the New Republic in October. "And whether America loves or hates Rick Perry the presidential candidate, the fact is we Texans need our governor back home. Now."

But today, despite his disappointing showing in the Iowa caucuses last night and diminishing prospects of capturing the GOP nomination, Perry announced that he would continue his campaign.

Google Adds Elections Hub to News Portal

Google.com/Elections: "From the nineteenth century's pamphlets to the twentieth century's TV ad revolution, our elections have always been shaped by how we communicate and consume information. There's no question that the Internet is set to deliver more political information, opinion and news than any other medium throughout the 2012 U.S. elections. The web offers candidate and issue info to voters; networking and fundraising platforms for campaigns; and research and productivity tools for journalists. Today, just in time for the Iowa Caucuses, we're launching google.com/elections, an election hub where citizens can study, watch, discuss, learn about, participate in and perhaps even make an impact on the digital campaign trail as it blazes forward to Tuesday, November 6, 2012."
