CRUDE: a film by Joe Berlinger
starting Friday, November 6th - one week only!
"A fascinating and important story. CRUDE does an extraordinary job of merging journalism and art." -Christiane Amanpour, CNN Chief International Correspondent
The inside story of the infamous "Amazon Chernobyl" case, Crude is a real-life high stakes legal drama, set against a backdrop of the environmental movement, global politics, celebrity activism, human rights advocacy, the media, multinational corporate power, and rapidly-disappearing indigenous cultures. Cameras rolled as the conflict raged in and out of court, and landed on the cover of Vanity Fair. Some of the film's subjects sparked further controversy as they won a CNN "Hero" award and the Goldman Award, the environmental equivalent of the Nobel Prize.

Bush the Motivator Meets Motivated Protesters
George W. Bush was scheduled to be one of the "inspirational speakers" at a "Get Motivated!" seminar at the Fort Worth Convention Center Arena. The irony was not missed by many of us that Bush and his administration were less than inspirational. Or, more to the point, much of what they had inspired was illegal, immoral, or criminally negligent -- and that George W. Bush should be in The Hague, rather than being celebrated while inspiring others to be like he is.

The sizeable group of people who were ready to go to Fort Worth on Monday morning to demand accountability of Bush & his cabal waned along with the sunshine, as warnings permeated the news about thunderstorms, high winds, flash-flooding, and freeway stoppages in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex. In the end, only "Intrepid Nel" and I were able to make it there. By the time we sloshed our way downtown from the suburbs in traffic, found a place to park (all the lots were full), did a wardrobe & prop check, stopped for a bathroom break, and walked the eight blocks in the rain, we had already missed Colin Powell. Not to worry, Bush's appearance was still to come. We climbed the stairs to find a huge arena, filled with thousands of wildly cheering "fans." It was similar to walking into a professional football arena during a play-off game. Literally, the crowd roared. It would have been fun, if they were cheering for peace, or justice, but given the nature of the seminar, we felt like fish-out-of-water and found it pretty intimidating.

North Texas Progressive Book Suggestion

She was a groomed for a gilded life in moneyed Houston, but Molly Ivins left the country club behind to become one of the most provocative, courageous, and influential journalists in American history. Presidents and senators called her for advice; her column ran in 400 newspapers; her books, starting with Molly Ivins Can't Say That, Can She?, were bestsellers. But despite her fame, few people really knew her: what her background was, who influenced her, how her political views developed, or how many painful struggles she fought.Molly Ivins is a comprehensive, definitive narrative biography, based on intimate knowledge of Molly, interviews with her family, friends, and colleagues, and access to a treasure trove of her personal papers.

Written in a rollicking style, it is at once the saga of a powerful, pugnacious woman muscling her way to the top in a world dominated by men; a fascinating look behind the scenes of national media and politics; and a sobering account of the toll of addiction and cancer. Molly Ivins adds layers of depth and complexity to the story of an American legend-a woman who inspired people both to laughter and action.

Franken's Skills Inspire Senate Map Drawing Competition

Former Air America host, newly elected Minnesota Senator, and ex-self-help guru Al Franken's cartography skills are drawing attention from one of the nation's most prestigious journals.
Franken recently gained notoreity for his ability to draw a map of the 48 continental states freehand and from memory, and the astounding parlor trick has inspired Nation Geographic to test the talents of other US Senators.
Politico broke the story.
Last week, National Geographic magazine sent letters out asking senators to freehand draw a map of their own state "from memory" and to "point out at least three places in your state that are important to you and, briefly, why

Franken Slapdown
The Franken Slapdown That Everyone's Talking About Al Franken, like many Americans, is sick and tired of listening to conservatives throw up strawman arguments about health care reform intended to scare Americans into accepting 47 million uninsured fellow citizens, increasing out-of-pocket costs and skyrocketing personal bankruptcies due to health care costs--all the while decrying "socialized" medicine. How sick?

Two Santa Clauses or How The Republican Party Has Conned America for
Thirty Years by Thom Hartmann

This weekend, House Republican leader John Boehner played out the role of Jude Wanniski on NBC's "Meet The Press."

Odds are you've never heard of Jude, but without him Reagan never would have become a "successful" president, Republicans never would have taken control of the House or Senate, Bill Clinton never would have been impeached, and neither George Bush would have been president.

The Dallas Democratic Forum presents David Plouffe, Barack Obama's 2008 Campaign Manager & his new book
 THE AUDACITY TO WIN
The Inside Story and Lessons of Barack Obama's Historic Victory

Come hear the ultimate insider's tale revealing both the strategies that delivered Obama to office and how the candidate and campaign handled moments of great challenge and opportunity.

Plouffe's book chronicles the arrival of a new moment in American life at the convergence of digital technology and grassroots organization, and the exciting possibilities revealed by a campaign that in many ways functioned as a $1 billion start-up with laser-like focus and discipline.

David Plouffe served as the campaign manager for Barack Obama's primary and general election victories in 2008.  Plouffe began his political career working for Senator Tom Harkin's reelection campaign. Later he managed Bob Torricelli's campaign in NJ and served as Democratic leader Dick Gephardt's Deputy Chief of Staff and as a strategist for Gephardt's Presidential bid. Before becoming campaign manager for Obama, Plouffe worked on the 2006 campaign of Deval Patrick for Massachusetts Governor. He is a Senior Adviser to AKP&D Message & Media, a leading Democratic consulting firm in Washington DC, Chicago and New York.

The Defining Moment
By PAUL KRUGMAN NYT
O.K., folks, this is it. It's the defining moment for health care reform.

Past efforts to give Americans what citizens of every other advanced nation already have - guaranteed access to essential care - have ended not with a bang, but with a whimper, usually dying in committee without ever making it to a vote.

But this time, broadly similar health-care bills have made it through multiple committees in both houses of Congress. And on Thursday, Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House, unveiled the legislation that she will send to the House floor, where it will almost surely pass. It's not a perfect bill, by a long shot, but it's a much stronger bill than almost anyone expected to emerge even a few weeks ago. And it would lead to near-universal coverage.

As a result, everyone in the political class - by which I mean politicians, people in the news media, and so on, basically whoever is in a position to influence the final stage of this legislative marathon - now has to make a choice. The seemingly impossible dream of fundamental health reform is just a few steps away from becoming reality, and each player has to decide whether he or she is going to help it across the finish line or stand in its way.

Call out Sarah Palin

We've put together a short Facebook note cataloging just some of Sarah Palin's many distortions and the facts that prove her wrong. But we need your help to "share" the note and make sure she doesn't get away with her outrageous lies.

If Sarah Palin wants to spread lies on Facebook, we'll call her out in the very same place. And when thousands of folks share our note and expose her lies, it will be clear that those who lie about reform will be held accountable -- no matter where they spread their misinformation.

The more we push back with the truth, the more Sarah Palin and others like her will have to think twice before they promote lies, and the less they'll be able to derail progress.

Even if you don't have a Facebook account, you can still help us call out Sarah Palin. Visit Call 'em Out: Sarah Palin to watch our video detailing her lies and to call Palin's political organization and say, "stop lying."

Rising health care costs are crushing American families and squeezing small businesses. Reform will reign in costs and cut the deficit in the long run -- that's why it's so important, and why Sarah Palin's lies are so malicious.

We're not letting it stand. We're calling Sarah Palin out:
