A Death in Tehran, FRONTLINE
For a moment this summer, it was the most-watched piece of video in the world: A young Iranian woman's tragic last moments were captured on a cameraphone as she lay dying on a Tehran street, then uploaded to the Web at the height of the protests that followed Iran's disputed presidential election. The video shocked and saddened people around the world, including President Obama, who called it "heartbreaking."

This Tuesday night, in A Death in Tehran, FRONTLINE examines the life and death of the woman at the center of it all--Neda Agha Soltan--the twenty-six year-old Tehrani tour guide whose death became an international outrage, and a potent symbol for the protest movement that threatened Iran's hardline government during those few chaotic weeks in June.  Read on

When the War Comes Home: Iraq Veteran at Fort Hood Speaks Out About Last Week's Mass Shooting

As families and friends mourn the thirteen individuals who were shot dead at the Fort Hood military base in Texas, questions continue to be raised about what might have motivated Thursday's rampage. He had also recently received orders to deploy to Afghanistan. We speak to Private Michael Kern from Fort Hood and independent journalist and author Dahr Jamail.

Hoodwinked: Former Economic Hit Man John Perkins Reveals Why the World Financial Markets Imploded -- and How to Remake Them

John Perkins calls himself a former economic hit man. He has seen the signs of today's financial meltdown before. The subprime mortgage fiasco, the collapse of the banking industry, the rising unemployment rate-these are all familiar to him. Perkins was on the front lines of monitoring and helping create these very events that were once just confined to the Third World. From 1971 to 1981, he worked for the international consulting firm of Chas T. Main, where he was a self-described "economic hit man." He is the author of the New York Times bestseller Confessions of An Economic Hit Man and The Secret History of the American Empire.

Don't You Think It's Time to Reinstate the Laws That Would Have Prevented the Financial Crash?
This week marks the tenth year anniversary of the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933, by the Gramm-Leach-Bliley or Financial Services Modernization Act, marking the moment when we were royally screwed by the banking system. Thank you to all those involved.

It's amazing how downright ebullient, President Bill Clinton was at that signing ceremony on November 12, 1999. an event introduced by then Treasury Secretary (now Obama advisor) Larry Summers, successor to Robert Rubin. Those restricting, anti-competitive Depression era, laws were finally behind us. Awesome.
It's the end of the world as we know it ...

Words We Can Believe In: The Hope-ful Power of LOFTby Richard Greene
Political Communication Strategist Host, "Hollywood CLOUT!" on Air America Radio
Just over one year after we worked our butts off for "Change We Can Believe In" and "Hope" we have found ourselves drowning in "Public Option", "Single Payer" and "Cap and Trade".
And Barack Obama's approval ratings plummet. Feels like politics as usual.
More importantly, Barack Obama's "Magic" seems to be disappearing.

Thom Hartmann | Major Hasan and The Legacy of George W. Bush
If Bill Clinton - or, presumably, Al Gore (or even Ralph Nader) - had been President in 2001, the Ft. Hood massacre almost certainly wouldn't have happened. Because George W. Bush was president, it did. Here's why it's Bush's fault: One of the first lessons aspiring novelists and screenwriters learn is that the goodness of a hero is defined by a single ...

How to pass healthcare reform
The way to fight Republicans is to make them think you like them. It'll scare them into passing the thing
By Garrison Keillor

There are some things we will never understand. Death, for one. I overheard a woman in the drugstore say, "He went into the hospital yesterday and he was eating his supper and then he fell asleep and then he died. I don't get it." She didn't seem grief-stricken, just uncomprehending. (Why did it have to happen now?) The paranoia that has seized the Republican Party is beyond my understanding. So is the physics of cord entanglement: how two power cords set separately in a briefcase become so complexly intertwined in only a few hours. And why do you find the rudest people in first class? Passengers in steerage accept their misery with stoical grace, while the privileged sit in luxury in a cold rage.

A Recovery for Some by Bob Herbert NYT
President Obama's strongest supporters during the presidential campaign were the young, the black and the poor - and they are among those who are being hammered unmercifully in this long and cruel economic downturn that the financial elites are telling us is over.
If the elites are correct, if the Great Recession really is over, then these core supporters of the president are being left far, far behind - as are blue-collar workers of every ethnic and political persuasion. Nobody wants to talk seriously about class in America, but the elites are smiling and perusing their stock portfolios while the checklist of Americans locked in depressionlike circumstances just grows and grows: construction and manufacturing workers, young men without college degrees (especially young black and Hispanic men), teenagers, and those who were already poor when the recession began.

Google: Finding flu vaccine information in one easy place

"This year, it's especially important to have clear information on what you can do to prepare for the flu season. With this in mind, we are happy to share a new feature for the U.S. which allows you to more easily find locations near you for getting both the seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccine. After expanding Google Flu Trends to a total of 20 countries and 38 languages, allowing more people to see near real-time estimates of flu activity, we began brainstorming with the U.S. Department for Health and Human Services (HHS), their flu.gov collaborators and the American Lung Association on the flu shot finder and other ways Google can be helpful to people this flu season.

You can check out the flu shot finder at www.google.com/flushot. The same tool will also be available shortly on www.flu.gov and the American Lung Association websites. It's important to note that this project is just beginning and we have not yet received information about flu shot clinics for many locations. In addition, many locations that are shown are currently out of stock. We launched this service now in order to help disseminate information about locations where vaccines are available, and also to make more vaccine providers aware of the project so that they can contribute."
