Women Say:  BUST THE BANKSTERS!

Calling on all women - and men - across the globe to rise up against the big banks that have caused the current economic crisis.

In observance of this INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY, we'll join the collective efforts initiated by Occupy activists, particularly the women-led campaigns of Women Occupy, Public Citizen and Rainforest Action Network, to hold Bank of America - the biggest of the big banks - accountable for the predatory economic policies that are destroying our families and communities.

Please join us for a peaceful, nonviolent direct action - a march and demonstration to:

BUST THE BANKSTERS!

11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 10, 2012

Inwood Station, 2720 Inwood Rd

Dallas, TX 75235 (SW corner of Inwood Rd & Denton Drive, Mapsco 34Q)

Gather at the Inwood Station parking lot at 11 a.m. to "get it together" for a street-theater march to Bank of America, 5636 Lemon Ave. Join the Pink Police to "arrest" Bank of America and say: BUST THE BANKSTERS! BUST UP THE BIG BANKS! (Even the Dallas Fed. Chair says too-big-to-fail banks should be broken up!) If you can, wear pink (black pants and a pink top if you think you might want to be deputized).

Let's bust out & bust up the banks!

WHY?

--Women have long been the prime targets of predatory bank policies and economic collapse: women are 32 percent more likely than men to receive sub-prime mortgages and Latina and African-American women borrowers are most likely to receive sub-prime loans at every income level.

--Women make up 51% of the world's population but 70% of the world's poor. We perform 66% of the world's work, produce 50% of the food, but earn 10% of the income and own less than 1% of the world's property.

--Our work continues to be unpaid, underpaid and undervalued, making us invisible to economic indicators and ineligible for the rewards reaped by the most "productive" members of society.

--It's time we turned the tables and started going after the big banks! And what better suspect than the biggest of the big banks - Bank of America?

--Bank of America not only leads the pack in illegal foreclosure practices, faulty loans, and tax evasion, it also pillages its customers with exorbitant fees and denies them their right to free speech! Plus, as the official bank of the US military, BofA has been accused of improperly foreclosing on active-duty troops.

--Need more reasons? http://www.womenoccupy.org/2012/02/why-target-bank-of-america-on-international-womens-day/

Democracy Now

Senate Narrowly Defeats Anti-Contraception Bill as Reproductive Rights Come Under Sustained Attack

The U.S. Senate has narrowly rejected an effort to vastly expand conscience exemptions in President Obama's new birth control coverage rule that already allows exemptions for religiously affiliated institutions. The Blunt Amendment, sponsored by Republican Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri, would have let any U.S. employer deny contraceptive health coverage on religious or moral grounds, but it failed in a 51-48 vote largely along partisan lines. In other reproductive rights news, a Virginia bill mandating ultrasound exams for women seeking abortions has cleared its final legislative hurdle and is expected to be signed into law. We speak with Terry O'Neill, president of the National Organization for Women, and Dr. Willie Parker, an abortion provider and board member of Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health. David Cay Johnston: "Romney's Tax Plan is George W. Bush on Steroids"

As presidential hopeful Mitt Romney campaigns ahead of next week's Super Tuesday primary vote, we look at the winners and losers under his proposed tax plan. Romney has vowed tax breaks for all Americans, but a recent analysis by the Tax Policy Center found his plan would mostly benefit the wealthy, while raising taxes on the poorest 125 million Americans. We speak with David Cay Johnston, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who writes about tax issues for Reuters and author of Free Lunch: How the Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at Government Expense (and Stick You With the Bill). WikiLeaks: Leaked Emails Expose Inner Workings of Private Intelligence Firm Stratfor, a "Shadow CIA"

The whistleblowing website WikiLeaks has begun publishing what it says are 5.5 million emails obtained from the servers of Stratfor, a private U.S.-based intelligence-gathering firm known to some as a "shadow CIA" for corporations and government agencies. The emails were reportedly obtained by the hackers group, Anonymous. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said the files implicate some of the world's largest firms in corporate espionage. Firms with ties to Stratfor include Coca-Cola, Goldman Sachs, Dow Chemical, and sectors of the U.S. government, including the Department of Homeland Security, the Marine Corps and the Defense Intelligence Agency. We speak with Kristinn Hrafnsson, a WikiLeaks spokesperson who has been a key member of the project to release the Stratfor emails. Watch/Listen/Read

The documentary narrates and illustrates, in exquisite but dispassionate detail, the systemic nature of the pervasive negative perception of Arabs and Muslims in America, nurtured in Hollywood and persistently reinforced by other mass media, with special reference to the history of Arab-Israeli conflict and the issues related to America's role in perpetuating it.

For the uninformed and naive American public, this documentary may be an eye-opener. At the very least, it would ignite a much needed public debate on the subject.

7:00 - 8:30 PM Program and Lecture

Cost: Adult $35 Student $15

Where:Unity of Dallas /6525 Forest Lane /Dallas, TX 75230

Register today because Rabbi Michael Lerner is coming to Dallas! The Dallas Peace Center's 8th annual lecture event features best-selling author Michael Lerner, PhD, rabbi of Beyt Tikkun synagogue in San Francisco. Rabbi Lerner is the editor of Tikkun magazine, one of the most respected intellectual/cultural magazines in the Jewish world.

Rabbi Lerner will examine how the mutual demonization and discounting of Israel's and Palestine's legitimate needs drive ongoing antagonism in the Middle East. He will explore the underlying psychological dynamics that fuel the seeming intransigence on both sides.

Lerner speaks to the importance of being both pro-Israel and pro-Palestine, challenges the master narratives in both Israel and Palestine to the extent that they demean the other side, and exposes the false idea that "homeland security" (either for Israel or for the U.S.) can be achieved through military, political, economic, or cultural domination.

Lerner argues that real security is best achieved through an ethos of caring and generosity toward "the other" and presents a Global Marshall Plan whose first location would be the Middle East.

States of Depression

By PAUL KRUGMAN

The economic news is looking better lately. But after previous false starts - remember "green shoots"? - it would be foolish to assume that all is well. And in any case, it's still a very slow economic recovery by historical standards.

There are several reasons for this slowness, with the most important being the overhang of household debt that is a legacy of the housing bubble. But one significant factor in our continuing economic weakness is the fact that government in America is doing exactly what both theory and history say it shouldn't: slashing spending in the face of a depressed economy.

Occupy Lubbock 2012

Occupy Lubbock 2012

William John Cox, Truthout: "Although protesters have been driven from their peaceful occupations of almost every location across the nation, including Wall Street, Los Angeles, UC Davis and Oakland, they have managed to hang on at a busy intersection across the street from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, one of the most conservative cities in the country."

PETITION: TELL RICK PERRY TO REVOKE RUSH LIMBAUGH'S

STATUS AS AN "HONORARY TEXAN"

Rush Limbaugh called Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown law student who was asked to testify at the "No-Girls-Allowed" Congressional hearing Republicans held about women's health, a "slut" and a "prostitute" and went on to say that, "if we're going to pay for your contraceptives and thus pay for you to have sex, we want something for it. We want you to post the videos online so we can all watch."

There is nothing Texan, and nothing honorable, about these comments. Tell Rick Perry to revoke Rush Limbaugh's status as an "Honorary Texan."

Texas sonogram law has some patients unhappy

Women seeking abortions at Whole Woman's Health in south Fort Worth often arrive upset or angry about Texas's new sonogram law, which began being fully enforced three weeks ago, a health center official says. Some are unhappy about the requirement that the physician verbally describes the fetus during a sonogram. But it's the hardship of having to schedule two appointments - one for the sonogram and another for the surgery no fewer than 24 hours later - that draws the most consistent ire.
