Democracy Now

Occupy Everywhere: Michael Moore, Naomi Klein on Next Steps for the Movement Against Corporate Power

How does the Occupy Wall Street movement move from "the outrage phase" to the "hope phase," and imagine a new economic model? In a Democracy Now! special broadcast, we bring you excerpts from a recent event that examined this question and much more. "Occupy Everywhere: On the New Politics and Possibilities of the Movement Against Corporate Power," a panel discussion hosted by The Nation magazine and The New School in New York City, features Oscar-winning filmmaker and author Michael Moore; Naomi Klein, best-selling author of the "Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism"; Rinku Sen of the Applied Research Center and publisher of ColorLines; Occupy Wall Street organizer Patrick Bruner; and veteran journalist William Greider, author of "Come Home, America: The Rise and Fall (and Redeeming Promise) of Our Country."  Watch/Listen/Read

Reporter Greg Palast Exposes How U.S. "Vulture" Funds Make Millions By Exploiting African Nations

American "vulture" investors, including a top funder of the Republican Party, have demanded that African nations pay over half a billion dollars for old debts - for which the investors paid only a few million. One New York vulture speculator, Peter Grossman of FG Capital Management, is demanding $100 million from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Greg Palast reports from the Congo, Bosnia and New York in the joint investigation by the BBC, the Guardian and Democracy Now! Watch/Listen/Read

Seymour Hersh: Propaganda Used Ahead of Iraq War Is Now Being Reused over Iran's Nuke Program

While the United States, Britain and Canada are planning to announce a coordinated set of sanctions against Iran's oil and petrochemical industry today, longtime investigative journalist Seymour Hersh questions the growing consensus on Iran's alleged nuclear weapons program. International pressure has been mounting on Iran since the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency revealed in a report the "possible military dimensions" to Iran's nuclear activities, citing "credible" evidence that "indicates that Iran has carried out activities relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device." In his latest article for The New Yorker blog, titled "Iran and the IAEA," Hersh argues the recent report is a "political document," not a scientific study. Watch/Listen/Read

North Texas Progressive Book Suggestion-Three Must-Read Books

on Protest Suggested by Barabara Ehrenreich

rockwall

When police raided Zuccotti Park in New York last week, they hauled off the 5,000 books from the Occupy Wall Street People's Library. About 1,000 have since been discovered in a Manhattan sanitation garage, but the others may be compost by now. Among them: Herman Melville's "Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall-Street" (1853), Jonathan Lethem's "The Ecstasy of Influence" (2011) and four copies of my son Ben Ehrenreich's new novel, "Ether" (2011), which I know was there because I took them to Zuccotti Park myself in mid-October.

New York City's assault on innocent books is arousing widespread revulsion. Stating that "people who would ransack and trash a library or a book collection put themselves on the moral level of book-burner," Common Cause is demanding that Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration replace all the stolen and ruined books - in duplicate. There's also been some talk at the Freedom Plaza encampment in D.C. about re-creating the Occupy Wall Street library out of books donated from people around the country, and possibly making it mobile.

Empire Building -The Koch brothers have bankrolled a broad attack on progressive government programs from Texas Observer

rockwall

Their grandfather's history in Texas helps explain why.

Charles and David Koch are the most powerful right-wing billionaires of our time. They have spent hundreds of millions bankrolling a broad attack against Social Security, organized labor, financial regulations, environmental protection and public education. The brothers plan to spend at least $200 million trying to elect right-wing, anti-government Republicans in 2012, according to Politico. They seem hell-bent on dragging America back to the dark days of unregulated capitalism. The history of their grandfather in Texas may help explain why.

Little has been written about Harry Koch. He's the least-known member of the Koch family, which has been marching under the same laissez-faire banner for the past three generations. Harry Koch emigrated to America in 1888, settled in a North Texas railroad town and became a newspaper publisher and aggressive corporate booster. He advocated for railroad and banking interests, amassing wealth and helping big business fight organized labor and squelch reforms

President as Piñata By Nicholas Kristof NYTimes

A YEAR before President Obama faces re-election, take a look at what has happened to other Western leaders confronting voters in this economic vortex.

Spain's Socialist government was defeated in a crushing landslide vote a week ago, leaving the party with its fewest members of Parliament since democratic elections were introduced in 1977. That's the pattern for incumbents from Ireland to Finland, Portugal to Denmark: Spain's was the eighth government to topple in Europe in two years.

In this economic crisis, Obama will face the same headwinds. That should provide a bracing warning to grumbling Democrats: If you don't like the way things are going right now, just wait.

Top 25 Rick Perry jokes of the presidential campaign

rockwall

NOT THE BRIGHTEST BULB IN THE ROOM

"It turns out that Texas Gov. Rick Perry got a D in Principles of Economics. So he can't be president, but he can get a job on President Obama's economic team."

-- Jay Leno, NBC

"Rick Perry said America's revolutionary war was fought in the 16th century. When told it was actually the 18th century, Perry apologized and said, 'I never said I was a geology major.'"

- Conan O'Brien, TBS

"In a new videotape message, Texas Gov. Rick Perry urges his supporters to follow him on 'Tweeter.' After hearing about it, John McCain laughed and said, "What an idiot! It's 'The Tweeter.""

-- Conan O'Brien, TBS

Records for 4.9 million Texas military clinic and hospital patients stolen

News release: "The loss of computer tapes by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) may have placed TRICARE patient data at risk. There is no evidence that any of the data has actually been accessed by a third party, and analysis shows the chance any data was actually compromised is low, but proactive measures are being taken to ensure that potentially affected patients are kept informed and protected. SAIC is a contractor for the TRICARE Management Activity. On September 14, TMA learned that an SAIC employee reported that on September 12 computer tapes containing personally identifiable and protected health information (PII/PHI) of 4.9 million military clinic and hospital patients in Texas, or those patients who had laboratory exams sent to the military hospitals in Texas, were stolen. The data contained on the tapes may include names, Social Security numbers, addresses and phone numbers, and some personal health data such as clinical notes, laboratory tests and prescriptions. There is no financial data, such as credit card or bank account information, on the backup tapes."
