Margin Call now showing Angelika

rockwallSet in the high-stakes world of the financial industry, "Margin Call" is a thriller entangling the key players at an investment firm during one perilous 24-hour period in the early stages of the 2008 financial crisis. When entry-level analyst Peter Sullivan unlocks information that could prove to be the downfall of the firm, a roller-coaster ride ensues as decisions both financial and moral catapult the lives of all involved to the brink of disaster. Expanding the parameters of genre, "Margin Call" is a riveting examination of the human components of a subject too often relegated to partisan issues of black and white.

Chris Hedges and Amy Goodman Talk OWS on 'Charlie Rose'

rockwallFrom Truthout: Here we have Truthdig columnist Chris Hedges and Democracy Now! anchor Amy Goodman going beyond sound bites and bullet points to give Charlie Rose their ...Finally, some smart discussion about Occupy Wall Street on a high-profile talk show. Here we have Truthdig columnist Chris Hedges and "Democracy Now!" anchor Amy Goodman going beyond sound bites and bullet points to give Charlie Rose their takes on OWS-what it means, why it's happening and who's taking part.

In their joint interview, Goodman doesn't hesitate to accept Rose's proposition that OWS could be called a new American revolution, telling the PBS host, "I think it's happening as we speak" and noting the response from abroad, while Hedges calls the movement "a return to sanity" and a "confrontation with dead ideas." Hedges cuts through the noise quickly in this clip, summing up the argument he's been making for years in his column by stating, "I think these people are very very clear that we cannot sustain ourselves ... not only as a society but even as a species, if we don't confront the corporate state." -KA

Michael Moore & Cornel West on OWS, Iraq & the Progressive Discontent Obama Faces in '12 Vote

As Occupy protests against inequality and corporate greed continue across the United States and around the world, we're joined by Michael Moore, Academy Award-winning filmmaker and activist, and Princeton University Professor Cornel West. Watch/Listen/Read

Dr. Cornel West: "We Are in a Magnificent Moment of Democratic Awakening"

Princeton University professor and renowned civil rights activist Cornel West was arrested Friday afternoon during a demonstration in Harlem against alleged racial profiling by the New York City Police Department. West joined a protest against the NYPD's stop-and-frisk policy, which critics say disproportionately targets people of color. New York City police carried out 600,000 such searches last year, with 87 percent of the targets being black or Hispanic. West's arrest in New York City comes just a week after he and 18 others were arrested on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court during a protest against the increasing role of money in politics, the same day that the new Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial was dedicated. Watch/Listen/Read

Glenn Greenwald on Two-Tiered U.S. Justice System, Obama's Assassination Program & the Arab Spring

Glenn Greenwald's new book, "With Liberty and Justice for Some: How the Law is Used to Destroy Equality and Protect the Powerful," offers a scathing critique of what he calls the two-tiered system of justice that ensures the political and financial class is virtually immune from prosecution in the United States. Greenwald explores how the media, both political parties, and the courts have abetted a process that has produced torture, war crimes, domestic spying, financial fraud, and even the assassination of U.S citizens. "We the People," Not "We the Corporations" by: Jim Hightower,

rockwallA year from now, Americans will be caught in an unprecedented blizzard of presidential campaign ads. We'll be blinded by the whiteout and buried in the storm's negativity.

For the first time ever, most of this ad blizzard will not come from the candidates, but from ads secretly funded by huge corporations. This is because a five-man cabal on the Supreme Court issued an edict last year that perverts nature itself. In a case titled Citizens United, the five decreed that -- shazam! -- lifeless corporate entities are henceforth "persons" with more electioneering rights than ... well, us real-life persons.

ALEC Exposed in Texas: ALEC 101

rockwallHere at Progress Texas, we are proud to announce a new project: ALEC Exposed in Texas. Nationally, the Center for American Progress has launched ALEC Exposed with the goal of tracking the ways that corporations rewrite state laws behind closed doors that cause direct harm to Americans' way of life. In the coming weeks and months, Progress Texas will launch an effort to expose ALEC's corporate influence right here at home. We've put together this overview to explain who ALEC is and what the ALEC Exposed in Texas project hopes to achieve.

Who Is ALEC?

For those who don't know already, ALEC stands for the American Legislative Exchange Council. They're a conservative group of some 300 corporations and 2,000 legislators who work in coalition to draft model bills designed to help corporate bottom lines.

Occupy Dallas Presentation - Nov.6th 12:15pm at Unitarian Universalist

rockwallThe UUCOC Social Justice Ministry Invites you to attend a briefing and a Q&A on Occupy Dallas.Join us after services* on Sunday, November 6th Mathieu Thiem of Occupy Dallas will join us at 12:15 for an hour-long discussion and Q&A period. Describing himself as a "normal blue collar worker" and "an average part of the 99%, who has an affinity for religion, philosophy and politics," Thiem began with Occupy Dallas, but has since branched out to Ft. Worth, and is corresponding between the two cities.

Thiem will address Occupy's practical goals, as well as its philosophy. The Occupy Movement, though it reflects differing ideas and motives, says Thiem, is about "benefiting from those differences, instead of persecuting and judging each other over them." He added that though the movement began with corporate greed, it has touched upon a greater problem: "The greed of corporations goes deeper than our own pockets, but instead reflects the poverty of our own essential being."

Thiem said in an e-mail that he would like to talk about "basically what the UU church has been talking about for decades," but has now "been recognized on a global scale."

Marc Maron : The Pod Complex

rockwallMarc Maron broadcasts the "WTF" podcast out of his garage studio, affectionately dubbed the Cat Ranch, in Los Angeles.

In 1995, comedian Marc Maron likened the rise of the Internet to the CB radio craze of the '70s. Neither, he said, amounted to much more than some weirdo broadcasting banalities from his backyard shed. "It's all hype!" he ranted on the "HBO Comedy Half-Hour." "I've been on the Internet - there's 12 people out there!"

In 2009, Maron set up recording equipment in his garage (almost a shed) and started talking. Thirty million downloads later, it appears those 12 people have been awfully busy.

Barack Obama and Social Media

rockwallBarack Obama's campaign maintains accounts on a variety of social media platforms, including Twitter, Foursquare, Facebook and now Tumblr.

That's right, Barack Obama is coming to the fast-growing blog site, which completed an $85 million round of funding back in September, according to Reuters.

A tweet from the President's official Twitter feed, controlled by his re-election campaign staff, announced the new Tumblr account on Monday.

The Texas governor has one driving passion: selling off government to the highest bidder

In a voice so subdued and halting that I think he must be sick, he launchesinto his speech, which consists of the following elements: a halfhearted football joke about Texas A&M that would have embarrassed a true fan like George W. Bush, worn bromides about liberals creating a nanny state, a fewlines about jobs in Texas, and a promise to repeal "as much of Obamacare as I can" on his first day in the White House.

"I will try," he says, "to make Washington, D.C., as inconsequential in your life as I can."

First Tuesday Social Action Film Festival presents

Food, Inc.

rockwall

In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli-the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.

Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma, In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield's Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms' Joel Salatin, Food, Inc. reveals surprising-and often shocking truths-about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here.

When: November 1, 7:00pm - 10:00pm

Where: Unitarian Universalist Church

of Oak Cliff

3839 W. Kiest

Dallas, Texas 75233
