Michigan Residents File Lawsuit Challenging Emergency Law Installing Unelected City Managers

A group of Michigan residents have filed a suit challenging a controversial new state law that allows the governor to appoint an unelected emergency manager or corporation to take over financially distressed towns and cities and effectively fire elected officials. Michigan now has unelected emergency managers running the schools in Detroit, as well as the cities of Pontiac, Ecorse and Benton Harbor. We speak to longtime Detroit resident, Edith Lee-Payne, one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit, and John Philo, legal director of the Maurice & Jane Sugar Law Center for Economic and Social Justice, which filed the lawsuit against the state of Michigan.  Watch/Listen/Read

Former CIA Agent Glenn Carle Reveals Bush Admin Effort to Smear War Critic Juan Cole

Former top CIA counterterrorism officer Glenn Carle has revealed the Bush administration sought damaging personal information on Juan Cole, an academic and prominent critic of the Iraq war, in an attempt to discredit him. Carle says the Bush White House made at least two requests for intelligence about Cole, whose blog "Informed Comment" rose to prominence after the Iraq invasion. Carle refused to carry out the request. In a joint interview, Carle and Cole join us to discuss the explosive revelation and why Cole is now calling for a congressional investigation. Glenn Greenwald: Why Was Rep. Weiner Forced to Resign While Bush and Cheney Walk Free?

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) resigned Thursday after House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and others said the scandal he created by sending lewd photographs of himself over Twitter had caused a distraction to Democrats preparing for the 2012 election. "He was forced out of office over-it wasn't even rising to the level of a sex scandal," says our guest, Salon.com political blogger Glenn Greenwald. "The Democratic leadership ... all acted to force him out of office. And yet, throughout the Bush years, when you had torture and illegal eavesdropping and the war in Iraq, that left hundreds of thousands dead, Nancy Pelosi said impeachment is off the table." In the wake of the financial crisis, investors are faced with a stark choice: entrust their hard-earned dollars to the Wall Street casino, or settle for anemic interest rates on savings, bonds, and CDs. Meanwhile, small businesses are being starved for the credit and capital they need to grow. There's got to be a better way.

In Locavesting: The Revolution in Local Investing and How to Profit from It, Amy Cortese takes us inside the local investing movement, where solutions to some of the nation's most pressing problems are taking shape. The idea is that, by investing in local businesses, rather than faceless conglomerates, investors can earn profits while building healthy, self-reliant communities.

Texas Is a Shining Example of Right-Wing Governance in Action and That's Why It's a Complete Basket-Case

Conservatives claim the "Texas Miracle" is a model for the nation, but it's actually a blueprint for winning the race to the bottom.

Conservative mythology now holds up Texas as a shining example of right-wing governance in action. Republicans would have us believe that gutting the state's social safety net, denying workers the right to bargain collectively and relentlessly cutting taxes unleashed a torrent of "job creation" and, ultimately, prosperity.

Al Franken: Fighting for America's Middle Class, Netroots Nation 2011

On Saturday, June 18th, I was given the honor of speaking at Netroots Nation 2011 in Minneapolis, the 6th annual convention of progressive grassroots leaders and activists. I was the opening speaker at Saturday's Morning Keynote session, which focused on how to save the middle class and build progressive infrastructure. I had an amazing time at the conference and met a ton of passionate activists and progressives.

Shock Doctrine: 'Emergency Finance Managers' and the Right-Wing's Power Grab

Emergency financial managers are being put in place by democratically elected governors throughout the country.

The onslaught of radical policies from the wave of Tea Party-supported right-wing state politicians swept in in the 2010 elections has been nearly overwhelming. Nearly every state that saw a Republican takeover of the statehouse or legislature has faced attacks on collective bargaining, immigration, reproductive freedoms, or health care. New power grabs have popped up constantly, and copycat bills have sprung up in their wake as if an official playbook has been passed around the country.

Stonewall Democrats Summer Fundraiser

Time  Tuesday, June 28 · 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Location    2916 Throckmorton St.

Stonewall Democrats of Dallas and the Dallas Stonewall Young Democrats are commemorating the 42nd anniversary of the historical Stonewall Riots with a private fundraising event where attendees will have the opportunity to meet two very high profile Democrats.

Our first speaker will be Boyd Richie, chairman of the Texas Democratic Party, who will speak about the importance of the upcoming 2012 election and how critical it is for our community to prepare for it.

In addition, Daniel Hernandez, the legislative intern whose quick thinking and composure during a crisis helped save Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' life following her shooting, will speak about his involvement in Democratic politics and his motivation behind getting involved at such an early age.

In addition to these fantastic speakers, the event will feature a private dinner followed by a VIP reception. For information on tickets to the event and sponsorship opportunities, please visit DallasSYD.org/StonewallFundraiser.html.

Sponsor contributions will help ensure the continued work of both SDD and DSYD in electing pro-equality candidates in 2012 and beyond.

The fight for equality continues and our community needs your support!

Following the fundraisers, Stonewall Democrats of Dallas and Dallas Stonewall Young Democrats will host a general public event with Daniel Hernandez so that all members of the LGBT community can hear his amazing story. It will take place from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Dallas Brick. Suggested donation is $10.
