BIN LADEN IS DEAD Qaeda Leader Killed by U.S. Forces in Pakistan

Rachel Maddow: 'I'm definitely not an autocutie' Guardian UK

t's 10.05pm on a rainy Tuesday night in the MSNBC studio in the now famous New York address, 30 Rock, and Rachel Maddow - one of the highest profile news anchors in America and certainly one of the most popular with liberal viewers - has just finished another edition of her nightly eponymous prime-time show.

Instead of regurgitating the pervasive but ultimately low-impact tales that make up the menu of so much TV news coverage in America (Donald Trump, Tea Partyists, etc etc), Maddow focused on stories that both affect people and require hard-nosed reporting, such as how the Republican party is trying to make it harder for people to register to vote in the upcoming election, and why (hint: 68% of first time voters in the last election voted for Barack Obama.)

Johann Hari: Frenzy around Britain's Royal Wedding "Should Embarrass Us All"

Up to two billion people around the world tuned in to watch the British royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, a story which has dominated TV news for weeks. The wedding buzz offers a chance to look at the monarchy, Britain's domestic policy, and how its colonial legacy around the world affects foreign affairs today. While all eyes were on the wedding procession and the first kiss, Democracy Now! spoke with Johann Hari, a columnist at The Independent of London, who says the royal wedding frenzy should be an embarrassment to us all. Guardian Newspaper Editor Defends Publishing WikiLeaks' Secret Guantánamo Files

More than 750 "secret" Guantánamo prisoner "assessment" files released by the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks cover almost every prisoner since the U.S. military base was opened in Cuba in 2002 and reveal the United States believed many of those held at Guantánamo were innocent or low-level operatives. Today The Guardian published a new series of reports based on the files that show how a single star informer at Bagram base won his freedom by incriminating at least 123 other prisoners. We're joined from London by The Guardian investigations executive editor, David Leigh. Watch/Listen/Read

Julia Child's passion for French cuisine began when she and her husband, Paul, moved to Paris in 1948. The couple met in Ceylon in 1944 when both were in the Office of Strategic Services, precursor to the CIA, and they married two years later. To tell their story, Conant (The Irregulars) combed through numerous archives to fill in the deep backgrounds of their OSS friends. Opening with OSS origins and the 1943 OSS recruits, the narrative follows the WWII trajectory of Julia Child, who volunteered for a post at the OSS base in India. At Mountbatten's mountaintop headquarters, the team included Julia, Paul, and the flamboyant Jane Foster. With the end of WWII, Jane flew to Java to record the war crimes testimonies of American POWs, while Paul and Julia's romance heated up in China and France. The couple fell under suspicion when Jane was targeted with accusations of espionage, having "left a trail of Communist ties the FBI followed like breadcrumbs" (though Conant found no conclusive evidence that Jane was a Soviet spy). The bulk of this book is mostly about Jane, making the title somewhat misleading, but Conant's vivid tapestry of the 1940s skillfully interweaves interviews, oral histories, memoirs, and recently unclassified OSS and FBI documents with unpublished diaries and letters. The adventurous young OSS recruits spring to life throughout this meticulously researched, authoritative history.

When conservatives choose God over science

It's tempting to respond with ridicule, but bite your tongue -- and be ready to admit that we don't know everything

By Alyssa Battistoni

When Texas Gov. Rick Perry officially declared three days last week to be "days of prayer" in response to the wildfires and droughts that have been plaguing the state, many progressives reacted with a mixture of disbelief and ridicule.

Calling for prayer while refusing to recognize the EPA's regulations on greenhouse gases seemed like an act of willful ignorance, as if Texas were sticking its fingers in its ears and humming as loud as it could to drown out what amounts to a warning of a future climate-change-induced catastrophe.

Film: The Power of Community

power-of-community1 2

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half - and food by 80 percent - people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles, as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people. They share how they transitioned from highly mechanized agriculture to using organic farming and urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis.

The film opens with a short history of Peak Oil, a term for the time when world oil production will reach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever. Cuba, the only country that has faced such a crisis, is an example of options and hope.

The 1st Tuesday Film Festival is produced by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Oak Cliff. This film is cosponsored by the Dallas Peace Center and Transition Dallas. Films are free, but donations are welcome to defray costs.

Texas whine: Why does Obama love Alabama more?

By Andrew Leonard

Last year, Rick Perry was talking secession. Now, with fires raging, a handout doesn't look so bad

With God apparently unmoved by Texas' official declaration of three days of prayer for rain, Gov. Rick Perry has turned his attention to another awesome potentate -- President Obama.

Specifically, Perry wants Obama to declare a federal state of emergency, which would allow Texas to recoup some 75 percent of the funds it is spending to combat devastating wildfires. But Perry is griping that despite having sent in his application on April 25, Obama still hasn't acted. Meanwhile, tornado-racked Alabama was lavished with immediate state-of-emergency love.

Springtime for Bankers

By PAUL KRUGMAN

Last year the G.O.P. pulled off two spectacular examples of bait-and-switch campaigning. Medicare, where the same people who screamed about death panels are now trying to dismantle the whole program, was the most obvious. But the same thing

happened with regard to financial reform.

The Texas Observer Final Friday forming locally!

Final Friday was started as First Friday about 40 years ago and had various hosts and venues over the decades. For many years before her death, Molly Ivins hosted the once-a-month party at her home. In its last iteration, Final Friday moved from house to house each month with several different hosts throughout the year.

With the beginning of a new decade, because the monthly party has always had a strong association with The Texas Observer and we now have a NEW Texas Observer (in print and online), we decided to rename the event:

Like the original parties of the late '60s and early '70s, The Texas Observer Final Friday will be gatherings of Texas progressives---writers, artists, musicians, activists, and a bunch of other folks who care about civil liberties and social and economic justice.....and having a good time on the final Friday of the month.

[If you are from Houston or Fort Worth, McAllen or Texarkana, El Paso or Beaumont....or anywhere else in Texas, start your own Texas Observer Final Friday. If you want to host or add yourself to an email list in your city, email your contact information to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and we'll help get you started. And when you get it going, we'll occasionally send Observer editors and contributors to entertain the assembled throngs.]

Frisco, Collin County:

Date:  Friday, April 29, 2011

Time:  6:30 p.m. until at least 9:30

Location: Third Base Sports Bar & Grill

We'll have our inaugural of this official party event this Friday, April 29th, starting at 6:30 p.m and running to at least 9:30 p.m. (This is a casual come-when-you-can kind of thing, so don't feel like you'll miss the show if you can't be there right at 6:30.)

We'll be rotating around to different parts of the county at different venues.  (For our next event we have a location in Downtown Plano scoped out).
