Texas Democratic Party

Early Voting will continue throughout this weekend, making the next 2 days very important to our Party. With that in mind, I'm writing to ask you to help us Get Out the Vote for Democrats in your community. Will you call your county party and tell them you'd like to volunteer? Find your county party's contact info here: http://www.txdemocrats.org/people/county-parties/

Depending on where you live, volunteer jobs may range from calling voters to knocking on doors to handing out information by a polling location. Think how proud you will be to know you were on the front lines of our success in 2010!

As a reminder, Bill White's website features an easy-to-use polling location locator: http://billwhitefortexas.com/ev/

Rally to Restore Sanity - Dallas Texas Satellite Rally

Time Saturday, October 30 10:30am - 3:30pm
Location Lee Harvey's   www.leeharveys.com
1807 Gould Street /Dallas, TX
That's right. Dallas, Texas. No kidding. Dallas.
This is for all the people who would like to travel to Washington DC  to show your support for restoring sanity to civil discourse, and who think shouting is annoying, counterproductive, and terrible for your  throat; who feel that the loudest voices shouldn't be the only ones that get heard.
Think of the Dallas event as Burning Man, but with the dance music, art cars, and nudity; ...replaced by tolerance, satire, and sanity.Feel free to bring a sign that reflects your sane or satirical point of view, and we're live-simulcasting the Washington rally on the patio.
At 2pm, after the broadcast, guest speakers Dallas City Councilmember Angela Hunt, Human Rights Initiative Award winner Bill Holston, and intellectual satirist Rawlins Gilliland.
Ride your bike, share a ride, bring a friend! This is a family friendly non-partisan event. Food, drinks, and full bar service available. For more information or press inquiries contact Reid Robinson

WikiLeaks Prepares Largest Intel Leak in US History with Release of 400,000 Iraq War Docs

The whistleblowing group WikiLeaks is preparing to release up to 400,000 US intelligence reports on the Iraq War. The disclosure would comprise the biggest leak in US history, far more than the 91,000 Afghanistan war logs WikiLeaks released this summer. We speak to the nation's most famous whistleblower, Daniel Ellsberg, who leaked the secret history of the Vietnam War in 1971, just before he heads to London to participate in the WikiLeak press conference.

Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz: Foreclosure Moratorium, Government Stimulus Needed to Revive US Economy

As the Obama administration rejects a foreclosure moratorium and austerity protests grip Europe, we assess the state of the US and global economy with Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, author of Freefall: America, Free Markets, and the Sinking of the World Economy. Stiglitz backs calls for a foreclosure moratorium and says opponents of a new government stimulus "don't understand basic economics." On war, Stiglitz says Iraq and Afghanistan are "the first wars in America's history financed totally on the credit card."

Big Oil Goes to College: BP, ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell Fund & Influence Research at Major Universities

Over the past five years, ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP, Royal Dutch Shell and ConocoPhillips have given millions of dollars to support energy research at top US universities. The private funds might fill a gap left by declining public investment, but a new report from the Center for American Progress warns that they also pose the risk of hijacking the universities' research agenda and compromising academic independence. In the largest deal, British oil giant BP has a $500 million collaboration with three major publicly financed research institutions: the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Frontline PBS new season

Last week : FRONTLINE presents its season premiere, Death by Fire, a chilling re-examination of the case of Cameron Todd Willingham, a man whose controversial life and death is now at the center of the national death penalty debate. With unique access to those closest to the case, FRONTLINE meticulously examines the evidence, beginning with the findings of several top arson investigators who each reached the same conclusion:

This Tuesday night, FRONTLINE joins forces with the independent non-profit newsroom ProPublica to tell the story behind one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history. It's a story of one company's ambitious rise from an also-ran in the oil business to an industry giant, thanks to an aggressive series of mergers and acquisitions that critics contend sacrificed safety at every turn.

The dramatic story behind the most audacious power grab in American history

The financial crisis that exploded in 2008 isn't past but prologue. The stunning rise, fall, and rescue of Wall Street in the bubble-and-bailout era was the coming-out party for the network of looters who sit at the nexus of American political and economic power. The grifter class-made up of the largest players in the financial industry and the politicians who do their bidding-has been growing in power for a generation, transferring wealth upward through increasingly complex financial mechanisms and political maneuvers. The crisis was only one terrifying manifestation of how they've hijacked America's political and economic life.

Falling Into the Chasm

This is what happens when you need to leap over an economic chasm - but either can't or won't jump far enough, so that you only get part of the way across.

If Democrats do as badly as expected in next week's elections, pundits will rush to interpret the results as a referendum on ideology. President Obama moved too far to the left, most will say, even though his actual program - a health care plan very similar to past Republican proposals, a fiscal stimulus that consisted mainly of tax cuts, help for the unemployed and aid to hard-pressed states - was more conservative than his election platform.

A few commentators will point out, with much more justice, that Mr. Obama never made a full-throated case for progressive policies, that he consistently stepped on his own message, that he was so worried about making bankers nervous that he ended up ceding populist anger to the right.

2010 U.S. Election and Voting Resources

It's that time again! Fall is here and that means Election Day (November 2nd) is around the corner. While candidates are busy giving speeches, filming commercials, and making appearances, the American public is also busy deciding whom to vote for. The ipl2 has created a special collection of election and voting resources to assist voters in this important democratic mission.

Special Collections - Election and Voting Resources
http://www.ipl.org/div/election/

Included in this collection are the following three websites.

One way to get up to date information on elections across the nation is through Project Vote Smart. Their interactive project, VoteEasy, provides a unique view of the issues and snapshots of the candidates in your area.

Project Vote Smart
http://www.votesmart.org/
Information for voters on political leaders, their positions on issues, and campaign finance, and encourages active participation in democratic processes through voting.

If you are having trouble deciphering political television ads and campaign statements, FactCheck.org can help you sort the fact from the fiction.

FactCheck.org
http://factcheck.org
Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania puts out this website to monitor the factual accuracy of statements made by and advertisements on behalf of major U.S. polictical figures.
