Third World America: How Our Politicians Are Abandoning the Middle Class and Betraying the American Dream
By Arianna Huffington

It's not an exaggeration to say that middle-class Americans are an endangered species and that the American Dream of a secure, comfortable standard of living has become as outdated as an Edsel with an eight-track player.  That the United States of America is in danger of becoming a third world nation.

The evidence is all around us:
Our industrial base is vanishing, taking with it the kind of jobs that have formed the backbone of our economy for more than a century; our education system is in shambles, making it harder for tomorrow's workforce to acquire the information and training it needs to land good twenty-first century jobs; our infrastructure-our roads, our bridges, our sewage and water, our transportation and electrical systems-is crumbling; our economic system has been reduced to recurring episodes of Corporations Gone Wild; our political system is broken, in thrall to a small financial elite using the power of the checkbook to control both parties.
And America's middle class, the driver of so much of our economic success and political stability, is rapidly disappearing, forcing us to confront the fear that we are slipping as a nation - that our children and grandchildren will enjoy fewer opportunities and face a lower standard of living than we did.
It's the dark flipside of the American Dream - an American Nightmare of our own making.

Arianna Huffington, who, with the must-read Huffington Post, has her finger on the pulse of America, unflinchingly tracks the gradual demise of America as an industrial, political, and economic leader.  In the vein of her fiery bestseller Pigs at the Trough, Third World America points fingers, names names, and details who's killing the American Dream.

Texas Democratic Women of Collin County
Monday -September 27, 2010 General Meeting, 6:45pm at the Preston Ridge Campus of Collin College, 9700 Wade Blvd Frisco, Texas, Founders Hall, Shawnee Room F148.
Members Alicia Bergeld and Amy Lawrence will be our highlighted speakers. We look forward to hearing about their personal experiences living and working abroad.
Alicia Bergfeld attended graduate school for International Relations at Webster University in Geneva.  The fall of 2006 was an exciting time to be abroad because of the impact of the 2006 midterm elections. She interned at the International Council of Nurses, an international NGO, and attended numerous conferences at the UN and throughout the city.  One of her most lasting impressions was how much more closely people followed US politics compared to American citizens.

Texas Young Democrats to create one of the largest virtual phonebanks

Sept 28th - Oct. 3rd: Help us reach out to young voters in the state!
In 2008, young voters across the nation came out in record numbers to elect the President, many of them for the first time. We opened a new door for our generation to get involved with our country, yet historically, young people tend to shut the door during midterm elections. With all we worked for in 08, we cannot afford to let that happen.

During September 28th through October 3rd, Young and College Democrats are coming together to create one of the largest virtual phonebanks in the state to reach out to 1st time Young voters. We need to make sure that their voices and vote will help elect candidates locally. Candidates like Bill White, Linda Chavez-Thompson, and local Congressional and State Representatives who will end the rising costs of tuition, increase protections as we enter the workplace, end bad practices from credit card companies, and ensure that our generation will be able to achieve the same and even better dream that our parents hoped for.

In order to accomplish this, we need you to come out and help again! When you sign up to help, you will have to attend a quick webinar to go over the script, processes, and which targeted races you can call into.Click here to sign up to help:

Bring Our War $$ Home Rally - Dallas Oct 2

  When: Saturday, October 2, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Where: St. Luke "Community" UMC, 5710 East R.L. Thornton Frwy., Dallas

On October 2nd we will support the One Nation Working Together rally in Washington DC.with a lcall rally at St Luke Community United Methodist Church. One of the largest coalitions of progressive organizations in our lifetime has come together to demand a people's agenda from our government. This gathering on 10.2.10 provides an important opportunity for peace and anti-war activists to work closely with and support other activists across the progressive political spectrum, to spread our message and voice our demands:
Jobs and economic recovery /Cuts in military spending to fund human needs /Peace abroad and renewable energy at home /Bring the troops and War dollars home now

We must create a people's movement for peace and justice that will transcend the October 2nd event so that a united voice of concerns from our local communities is heard and appropriate actions are taken by our Government officials.

It was the people united that moved the Civil Rights Bill into law.  It was people protesting in millions across the United States in 1969 that brought the Vietnam War to an end, and in the 1920's the passage of the 19th Amendment for woman's rights.  Every human rights law written in the United State of America is as a direct result of people standing in solidarity and demanding justice.
Join us on October 2!

We Haven't Hit Bottom Yet By BOB HERBERT NY Times

Marcus Vogt is 20 years old and homeless. Or, as he puts it, "I'm going through a couch-surfing phase."
Mr. Vogt is a Wal-Mart employee but he was injured in a car accident and was unable to work for a couple of months. With no income and no health insurance, he quickly found himself unable to pay the rent. Even meals were hard to come by.
(His situation is quite a statement about real life in the United States in the 21st century. On the same day that I spoke with Mr. Vogt, Forbes magazine came out with its list of the 400 most outrageously rich Americans.)

More Than 100,000 RSVP For Stewart, Colbert D.C. Rallies On Facebook

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert's planned Washington rallies are still more than a month away, but if Facebook is any indication, they can expect a huge turnout -- one that could eclipse "Restoring Honor," Glenn Beck's evangelical gathering that inspired the Comedy Central duo to do their own. More than 100,000 people have RSVP'd for Stewart's "Rally to Restore Sanity" on Facebook -- and another 1,900 say they "might" attend.
