Organizing for America :  Final March for Reform is going strong

The Final March for Reform is going strong -- yesterday, OFA supporters made the phones ring off the hook in Congressional offices on Capitol Hill and across the country. But for every member of Congress, there are eight anti-reform lobbyists swarming Capitol Hill -- and the upcoming vote is still too close to call.

So in these crucial, final days, we must make sure the voices of constituents break through the lobbyist attacks. And here's the plan to make it happen:

As the next step in the Final March for Reform, OFA supporters like you will be gathering at volunteer phone banks across the country. We'll be calling supportive voters in critical districts nationwide, asking them to reach out to their representatives and express their strong support for reform. A local OFA organizer will be on hand at every event, and no experience is required.

Here's how to join in: First, RSVP for an event near you -- there's one in Dallas, on March 17th. Before you go, make sure to invite friends to come with you, or help them find an event in their area on our website. Then join with local supporters at your event and reach out to as many voters as you can -- each call makes a vital difference.

RSVP here to get started. Here are the details for the event nearest you:What: Final March for Reform Phone Bank
Where: 4312 McKinney Ave. #16 Dallas, TX 75205
When: Wednesday, March 17th 7:00 PM

In Plano
Monday, March 15th
6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

105,000 Tattoos: Iraqi Artist Wafaa Bilal Turns His Own Body into a Canvas to Commemorate Dead Iraqis & Americans

The official death toll from the war is 100,000, but it is widely estimated to be much higher, perhaps even as high as one million. In his latest piece of artwork, Iraqi American artist Wafaa Bilal tries to grapple with the enormity of these numbers. It's a twenty-four-hour live tattooing performance called "..and Counting" that began at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts gallery in New York Monday night. By tonight Bilal's back will be tattooed with the names of Iraqi cities, 5,000 red dots representing dead American soldiers and 100,000 dots in invisible ink representing the official death toll for Iraqis. The dots representing the Iraqi death toll will only be visible under ultraviolet light.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich Takes on Democratic Leaders with Insistence on Public Option, Call for Afghan Withdrawal

Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich joins us to discuss two House debates in which he's played a central role this week. The Ohio Democrat is threatening to vote against his party's healthcare reform package because it does not contain a robust public option. Meanwhile, Kucinich's bill to force the withdrawal of all US troops from Afghanistan was taken up on Wednesday. After a rare three-and-a-half-hour debate on the war, the majority of House Democrats joined with Republicans to defeat the measure.

Doris "Granny D" Haddock (1910-2010): Remembering Legendary Campaign Finance Reform Activist

Doris "Granny D" Haddock, one of the leading fighters for campaign finance reform in the United States, died on Tuesday at the age of 100. In 1999, just shy of her ninetieth birthday, Granny D walked 3,200 miles across the country to promote campaign finance reform. She is widely credited for galvanizing the public support that helped pass the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Act in 2002. We replay an excerpt of a 2004 interview with Granny D in the midst of her campaign for the US Senate against New Hampshire incumbent Judd Gregg.

Hightower: Why Obama and Dems Seem Uncapable of Taking a Firm Stand on Anything
The Obama-ites seem incapable of firm stands. They excite us by boldly addressing our economic woes. But when it comes time to follow through -- it's droopsville.

Jonathan Safran Foer spent much of his teenage and college years oscillating between omnivore and vegetarian. But on the brink of fatherhood-facing the prospect of having to make dietary choices on a child's behalf-his casual questioning took on an urgency His quest for answers ultimately required him to visit factory farms in the middle of the night, dissect the emotional ingredients of meals from his childhood, and probe some of his most primal instincts about right and wrong. Brilliantly synthesizing philosophy, literature, science, memoir and his own detective work, Eating Animals explores the many fictions we use to justify our eating habits-from folklore to pop culture to family traditions and national myth-and how such tales can lull us into a brutal forgetting. Marked by Foer's profound moral ferocity and unvarying generosity, as well as the vibrant style and creativity that made his previous books, Everything is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, widely loved, Eating Animals is a celebration and a reckoning, a story about the stories we've told-and the stories we now need to tell.

Jonathan Safran Foer, "Eating Animals" and Frank Bruni, "Born Round" Frank Bruni; Jonathan Safran Foer

Jonathan Safran Foer explores the policies of factory farming and the politics of vegetarianism.  Mr. Foer reports from the field and the dinner table as he looks into the current systems that deliver food from farm to fork.  Jonathan Safran Foer is joined in discussion by former New York Times restaurant critic, Frank Bruni, who is the author of Born Round: The Secret History of a Full Time Eater at the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan, New York City.
Jonathan Safran Foer is the author of the novels Everything is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.  For more information, visit eatinganimals.com.

Think Again: Listen Up, Progressives: Talk Radio Matters

By Eric Alterman, Danny Goldberg

Did you know that when the White House and members of the media mention "code words like 'diversity' and 'equality'" what they are really proposing is "communist revolution?"
Did you know that Osama bin Laden's remarks about global warming are almost identical to "those of the average, run-of-the-mill leftist, like Obama or Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi or the entire Democrat Party?" Or that the "global warming scam" is "an effort by the left to destroy capitalist economies?

DVD-Day for "Capitalism: A Love Story"Michael Moor on with Rachel and you can chat live with him !

DVD-Day for "Capitalism: A Love Story" has finally arrived for all you good folks who just couldn't figure out how to fit in a trip to the movie theater between your three part-time jobs -- or simply weren't able to afford the $10 for the small popcorn at your local rip-off cine-mall when my film was released last fall.
What's with you people?! I make these movies for you to see on a big screen, in the dark, with 200 strangers who want to hoot and holler along with you. Those of you who did see it -- thank you!! You helped to make it the 8th-largest grossing documentary of all time (and, as of Sunday morning, "Capitalism" had sold more tickets than Best Picture winner, "The Hurt Locker").
But for those of you who didn't get to the theater, what's your excuse? Didn't want to sit through 20 minutes of TV ads up on the screen before the movie started? Don't like sitting next to people who have 6 important cell calls to make during the film? Feet get stuck to the floor after two hours of people spilling their 164 oz. sodas, thus preventing you from getting up when the film's over? Jeez, what babies!
Well, starting today, you can now OWN your very own DVD (or Blu-ray) copy of my latest action/romance/horror film, "Capitalism: A Love Story" -- and watch it in the comfort of your soon-to-be-foreclosed home! Get it cheap at Amazon

Join Al Gore tonight

Can you join me this Monday, March 15th at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time, for an urgent conversation about passing strong clean energy and climate legislation in 2010?

A bipartisan group of Senators is close to announcing a bill that may be our best hope for kickstarting a clean energy revolution and beginning to solve the climate crisis -- but big oil, big coal and their allies in Congress are kicking into high gear to strip it of any meaning or power.

That's why I'm hosting a live strategy conference call on Monday just for Repower America supporters. You are critical to this fight, so I hope you will join me as I outline our upcoming efforts to push for strong legislation this year -- and discuss how you can get involved and make a difference.
Join me and your fellow Repower America supporters this Monday at 7:30 pm ET -- RSVP right now.

Slush Fun :At least one Texan has benefited from Rick Perry's Enterprise Fund.

For the past six years, Texas Gov. Rick Perry has lorded over a controversial stash of taxpayer money known as the Texas Enterprise Fund, dispensing huge sums-$345 million and counting-to large corporations, ostensibly to spur job growth. Critics call it the governor's slush fund. "He takes from us so that he can play with his corporate slush fund and award his friends' businesses," said Debra Medina, one of Perry's two challengers for the GOP gubernatorial nomination, at a recent candidate's debate.

Franken comic book biography coming soon

It's hard to remember, but there was a time when Al Franken was just a comic and writer. Today, though, he is a rising political star.
Franken is also set to become the latest subject in Bluewater Productions' Political Power line of biography comics. Political Power: Al Franken will be released to comic shops across the country in May 2010.
Franken made history in 2008, when he defeated Republican incumbent Norm Coleman to become the junior U.S. Senator from Minnesota. Of course, this victory did not come easily. In a race that was decided by a razor-thin margin and involved a recount and several appeals, all the way to the Minnesota Supreme Court, which ruled in Franken's favor. Franken was finally sworn in on July 7, 2009 after Coleman declined to take the controversial case to the U.S. Supreme Court and instead conceded after a hard-fought, eight-month ordeal.
Political Power: Al Franken will trace the Senator's rise from Saturday Night Live writer, a position he often used to skewer politicians, to radio talk show host to viable Senate candidate.

TurboTax announces Glenn Beck ad pull via Twitter

Glenn Beck is a performance artist of the highest order. Whenever I have happened upon a little clip of him online, I feel that he has studied just about every successful TV evangelist. He seems to mimic their hand gestures, their little eye rolls. And just like the finest TV evangelist, he also seems to succeed in making a lot of money.
But for how much longer can his act be lucrative? Tax-preparation software company TurboTax on Wednesday became the 120th company to take its ads away from Beck's variety show on Fox.
Companies such as Kraft, Mercedes, Geico, Verizon, and AT&T have already decided that Beck's invective can tend toward the objectionable and therefore should not enjoy their advertising. TurboTax decided to announce its decision in a tweet on Twitter.com/turbotax
