Living in Emergency: Stories of Doctors Without Borders - LIVE with Elizabeth Vargas TONIGHT !

Find a theatre for tonight
HERE

NCM Fathom is partnering with the independent medical humanitarian organization, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), for a special One Night Event featuring the critically acclaimed "Living in Emergency: Stories of Doctors Without Borders" documentary and a live panel discussion with frontline doctors and journalists.

For the first time ever, Doctors Without Borders gave a documentary crew uncensored access to its field operations. "Living in Emergency," gives a rare 'inside look' into Doctors Without Borders through the eyes of four doctors pushed to the edge and forced to confront the limits of their idealism in the face of overwhelming medical needs.

This Live Event will be hosted and moderated by Elizabeth Vargas, Anchor of ABC News 20/20 at the NYU, Skirball Center, in New York City and broadcast to over 440 theatres nationwide.

An Evening with Antonia Juhasz

Wednesday, December 16, 6:00 p.m.

Explosive fuel for the raging debate on oil prices" by Kirkus Reviews, The Christian Science Monitor calls the book "...a brave, groundbreaking case study.... A good first step toward true energy independence is to read this insightful book."  Juhasz is an associate fellow with the Institute for Policy Studies and a senior analyst for Foreign Policy In Focus. She is on the National Advisory Committee of Iraq Veterans Against the War and on the Board of Directors of Coffee Strong, a resource center fro GIs and veterans around Fort Lewis, near Tacoma, Washington.  Join us for dinner (separate tickets) at Romano's Macaroni Grill, 4535 Beltline Road (north side of Beltline, between Midway & Dallas Parkway) at 6:00 p.m. Those who don't wish to have dinner but would like to hear Juhasz speak are welcome to join us at 7:00 p.m.

Annise wins! Texas Wins!

I think the email from Stonewall Democrats said everything that needed to be said :
Annise wins! Texas Wins!

Dallas Stonewall Young Democrats is proud to celebrate the VICTORY of Annise Parker, our next mayor of Houston. Annise won tonight's run-off election and will become the first openly lesbian mayor of the United States of America's fourth largest city!

DSYD members are proud to have supported Annise throughout the general and run-off elections. We gave our money and our time - making thousands of phone calls last weekend to supporters to help get out the vote.

Despite some setbacks for the LGBT community, tonight, as we close to 2009 with an ANNISE PARKER victory, we can truly say...

YES WE CAN!/SI SE PUEDE!

Lords of Finance The Bankers Who Broke the World

by Liaquat Ahamed

It is commonly believed that the Great Depression that began in 1929 resulted from a confluence of events beyond the control of any one person or government. In fact, as Liaquat Ahamed reveals, it was the decisions taken by a small number of central bankers that were the primary cause of the economic meltdown, the effects of which set the stage for World War II and reverberated for decades.
In Lords of Finance, Ahamed-a veteran investment manager who has worked at the World Bank-offers unforgettable portraits of the four men whose personal and professional actions as heads of their respective central banks changed the course of the twentieth century. They are:
· The neurotic and enigmatic Montagu Norman of the Bank of England
· The xenophobic and suspicious Émile Moreau of the Banque de France
· The arrogant yet brilliant Hjalmar Schacht of the Reichsbank
· Benjamin Strong of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, whose facade of energy and drive masked a deeply wounded and overburdened man

Air America Digital Chief Departs

After around a year, Air America's first chief digital officer is leaving the liberal media firm. Michael Bassik's last day with the company is today. He joined Air America last October, and was tasked with helping the beleaguered company become a global media brand with a focus on digital multimedia -- in addition to its original terrestrial radio business.
Perhaps the most significant undertaking during Bassik's relatively brief tenure has been a redesign of the Air America Web site, which the firm launched in beta in October. The redesigned site takes on a look reminiscent of HuffingtonPost, one of its key rivals in the arena of left-leaning digital media; an oversized news image greets the user at the top of both sites, for instance.

The People Speak/Voices of a People's History

Sunday, December 13, The History Channel

This Sunday, Howard Zinn's "The People Speak"-the documentary inspired by his legendary book A People's History of the United States will be broadcast on the History Channel at 8:00pm EST. The History Channel is best-known for WWII documentaries, which has earned it the nickname "the Hitler channel." "The People Speak" made it onto this unlikely site apparently because of the irresistible actors who appear in the documentary, including Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Danny Glover, Marisa Tomei, Morgan Freeman, and Sandra Oh, along with music by Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Eddie Vedder, among many others.

If you missed it watch for repeats here

"We wanted to choose words that had some meaning today,"said Zinn ; "Not from Supreme Court decisions or presidential speeches, but from some people you've never heard of."

There's also a soundtrack on CD, and a big "People Speak" website with video and a classroom study guide. A two-disk DVD will be out in January. The "People's History" book, meanwhile, has now sold two million copies.

Support : Fort Hood's Under the Hood Cafe

But we need your continued support to keep our doors open. The Fort Hood Support Network (FHSN) operates Under the Hood Cafe in Killeen, Texas.   FHSN is a Texas non-profit corporation with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.  Donations may be treated as tax-deductible.

We are especially grateful to our donors who make monthly contributions:  Sam, Alix, Phil, Tom, Victor, Heidi, Jim, Larry, Alice and Carlos.  Knowing we can count on this regular income makes budgeting much easier.  We are also extremely grateful for the fundraisers that have been held in Austin, Dallas, Boston, and San Francisco.  We want to acknowledge the help we have received from Veterans for Peace chapters, the Houston Peace and Justice Center, the Dallas Peace and Justice Center and CodePink.

Here are just a few 2009 highlights:

This Spring, two University of Texas film students produced a short documentary on the coffeehouse.  On Memorial Day, active duty GIs led the first peace march in Killeen since the Vietnam era. In July, Christians for Peace and other area peace activists held a silent march and vigil to the gates of Fort Hood

In August, Victor Agosto and Travis Bishop, faced courts martial for resisting deployment to Afghanistan.  Under the Hood provided a critical support system for these soldiers.  Victor is now out of the Army and has joined the Fort Hood Support Network Board that operates Under the Hood.  The other soldier, Travis Bishop, was sentenced to a year and is serving that time in Fort Lewis.  On July 29, 2009, the day of Victor Agosto's release from the Bell County Jail, Under the Hood hosted Col. Ann Wright (retired).A GI and veterans writing workshop was held at Under the Hood on Veteran's Day, followed by a candlelight vigil at the gates of Fort Hood. underthehoodcafe@gmail.com

Remarks of President Barack Obama -- As Prepared for Delivery
A Just and Lasting Peace
Acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize

Your Majesties, Your Royal Highnesses, Distinguished Members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, citizens of America, and citizens of the world:
I receive this honor with deep gratitude and great humility. It is an award that speaks to our highest aspirations -- that for all the cruelty and hardship of our world, we are not mere prisoners of fate. Our actions matter, and can bend history in the direction of justice.
And yet I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the considerable controversy that your generous decision has generated. In part, this is because I am at the beginning, and not the end, of my labors on the world stage. Compared to some of the giants of history who have received this prize -- Schweitzer and King; Marshall and Mandela -- my accomplishments are slight. And then there are the men and women around the world who have been jailed and beaten in the pursuit of justice; those who toil in humanitarian organizations to relieve suffering; the unrecognized millions whose quiet acts of courage and compassion inspire even the most hardened of cynics. I cannot argue with those who find these men and women - some known, some obscure to all but those they help - to be far more deserving of this honor than I.

Paranormal Flexibility
By CHARLES M. BLOW NYT

The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life released a report on Wednesday that is bound to stir conversation about the increasingly complicated cacophony of spirituality in America - a mash-up of traditional faiths, fantasy and mythology.
Entitled "Many Americans Mix Multiple Faiths," the report points out that many Americans are now choosing to "blend Christianity with Eastern or New Age beliefs" and that "sizable minorities of all major U.S. religious groups" said that they have had supernatural experiences, like encountering ghosts.
For the first time in 47 years of polling, the number of Americans who said that they have had a religious or mystical experience, which the question defined as a "moment of sudden religious insight or awakening," was greater than those who said that they had not.

Texas Populist Jim Hightower Makes Progressive 'Hall of Fame

Texas Populist Jim Hightower Makes Progressive 'Hall of Fame,' as Nation Magazine Gathering Grapples with Conflicted Feelings about President Obama

The annual Nation Institute dinner in New York City on Monday, where the $100,000 Puffin Prize for Creative Citizenship was awarded, turned into a revealing Rorschach test of how progressives feel about President Obama nearly a year after the inauguration that made many of them downright giddy. Needless to say, the giddiness has dissipated.
Obama's escalation of the war effort in Afghanistan was a prime preoccupation of many of the attendees; a mix of leaders, advocates and wealthy donors who support the great investigative work of the Nation Institute and many other progressive causes.
