December 7,  2009

Greetings!

Good Morning !

Here is another batch of Holiday parties and events that you are invited to attend and also make sure this weel that you listen to Air America's own Jack Rice broadcasting live from Afghanistan. Since Al Franken's calls from Iraq during his USO tours in '05 and '06 we've not had antyhing like this on AAR.

Please consider sponsoring a week of this newsletter, our subscribers numbers grow every week.  Please also post a note to any local progressive online email group, Facebook or maybe even Twitter and encourage others to subscribe to this great newsletter ! This is only as great of a way to get information to progressives across North Texas as we make it, and I need your help!

Please don't think,  we already have  a Dem club Facebook or email list , we don't need to get involved! Wrong- this newsletter reaches folks NOT on your list and maybe even progressives that don't call themselves Democrats but who will get involved for the right candidate or issue. We also reach across geographical lines and urge to folks to get involved all over the  Metroplex!

Newsletter sign up box can be found here: http://www.northtexasprogressive.org/

Blood and Treasure: Is Afghanistan worth the sacrifice?

From The Texas Observer

Texans have paid dearly for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The highest cost is tallied in casualties. As this issue went to press, 467 Texas men and women had lost their lives since the United States invaded Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003-9 percent of the total American casualties. That death toll keeps climbing as the Obama administration shifts troops and resources from Iraq to Afghanistan (see chart here). In recent months, an average of one Texan per week has been killed in the "graveyard of empires." (For some of their stories, click here).

Of the 27 Texas soldiers who've died in Afghanistan thus far in 2009, 13 were victims of improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Eight Texans were killed in combat. Six died as the result of what the military calls "non-hostile" or "non-combat" incidents-catch-all terms for unspecified causes of death including suicide, homicide, vehicle accidents and disease. Such cases are under investigation. Families do not know, and may never know, what happened.

Eliot Spitzer: Geithner, Bernanke "Complicit" in Financial Crisis and Should Go

In an extended interview, we speak with former New York governor Eliot Spitzer about the financial crisis and how it was handled by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. Bernanke and Geithner "actually built and participated in creating the structure that now has collapsed," Spitzer says and calls on them to be replaced. Spitzer also talks about the scandal that erupted last year that forced him to resign as governor. "I have no doubt there were many people who were opposed to me, very powerful forces, who were happy to see me go," Spitzer says. "Whether they participated, I'll let others figure that out. I resigned because of what I did."

Amy Goodman Detained at Canadian Border, Questioned About Speech...and 2010 Olympics

While traveling to Vancouver, Canada to speak at the Vancouver Public Library at a benefit for community radio stations, Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman and her two colleagues were detained by Canadian authorities. Amy was questioned extensively about the speech she intended to give; their car was gone through by armed border guards, and their papers and laptop computers were scoured. The armed interrogators were particularly interested in whether she would be speaking about the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.

*** Vancouver Observer: Amy Goodman Gets Brilliant Story Idea from Canadian Border Guards *

Read the Vancouver Observer article about Amy Goodman's detention at the Canadian border: "Well, it's official. Suspicion of criticizing the 2010 Olympics gets you on a watch list at the Canadian border. Want to come to Canada and discuss the environmental shame that is the tar sands? Go ahead. Want to meddle in Canadian military policy in Afghanistan? Fill your boots. Want to criticize the Government's position on Global Warming? Whatever, dude."

The Tyranny of Oil: The World's Most Powerful Industry--and What We Must Do to Stop It  (Hardcover)

by Antonia Juhasz
$17.81 & eligible for free shipping with Amazon Prime

From Publishers Weekly: Starred Review. In this thorough, readable takedown of Big Oil, the most profitable industry in the world, Juhasz (The Bush Agenda) exposes the ways in which a half dozen oil companies have achieved control over American families and U.S. politics, triggering environmental and humanitarian catastrophes they have no intention of resolving. Within 10 years of Standard Oil's founding in 1870, John D. Rockefeller monopolized the refining, marketing and output of U.S. oil; ever since 1890's Sherman Antitrust Act split the company into small constituent parts, oil players have scrambled to evade regulation, regather into ever-larger corporations and regain the ability to set prices and control output. Debunking industry claims over recent oil price escalation, Juhasz exposes how Big Oil has used techniques like speculative futures markets and the "Enron Loophole"--along with massive operations opacity--to reap record profits year after year while growing their political influence; indeed, Juhasz locates the current "oiligarchy" making "the most pressing decisions of our time" from inside George W. Bush's White House, crafting policy and advocating war. Calling for a "Separation of Oil and State," this excellent, wide-ranging study of disastrous monopoly capitalism should shake up notions that major energy players are interested in any alternative to more oil, money and power.

America Without a Middle Class

America's Disappearing Middle Class
"Today, one in five Americans is unemployed, underemployed or just plain out of work. One in nine families can't make the minimum payment on their credit cards. One in eight mortgages is in default or foreclosure.

One in eight Americans is on food stamps. More than 120,000 families are filing for bankruptcy every month. The economic crisis has wiped more than $5 trillion from pensions and savings, has left family balance sheets upside down, and threatens to put ten million homeowners out on the street."

Bill White Announces for Governor

Bill White Announces for Governor
Popular Houston mayor a "game changer" in Texas Governor's race
Bill White officially announced his candidacy for Governor today in front of several hundred supporters in Houston, Texas. White laid out his vision for a better Texas while clearly pointing out Rick Perry's failures as Governor. White's speech today was well received and even called the "best speech" White has ever given by one supporter. Washington Post political writer Chris Cillizza said, "White gives Democrats a legitimate chance of winning the Texas governorship next year, a prospect that was unimaginable as recently as a few weeks ago."  We have included some of the Austin American-Statesman coverage and a link to the announcement below.
Houston Mayor Bill White launched his Democratic campaign for governor Friday with a speech that focused heavily on consumer issues and took aim at GOP Gov. Rick Perry... He said he's fine with holding students and teachers accountable, but that voters should hold Perry accountable for the state's high rate of high school dropouts.
