All you need is your voter registration certificate or any of the many other acceptable forms of ID under current election law listed here.

2.    The last day to apply for a ballot by mail is November 1, 2011. More information about voting by mail can be found here.

3.    Everyone will have Constitutional Amendments on their ballot. These are amendments to the Texas Constitution. You can read explanations of each amendment here. The Texas Democratic Party has no official position on any of these amendments.

4.    Some of you will have local elections or bond elections on your ballot. For information on additional items that will be on your ballot, contact your County Elections office.

5.    If you plan to vote early in person, contact your County Early Voting Clerk for locations. During Early Voting, you may vote anywhere in the county.

Free screening and discussion of the movie Food Stamped

You are invited to a private screening and discussion of the movie Food Stamped

Food Stamped is an informative and humorous documentary film following a couple as they attempt to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet on a food stamp budget.

Nutrition educator Shira Potash teaches nutrition-based cooking classes to elementary school students in low-income neighborhoods, most of whom are eligible for food stamps. In an attempt to walk a mile in their shoes, Shira and her documentary filmmaker husband embark on the "food stamp challenge" where they eat on roughly one dollar per meal.

Along the way, they consult with food justice activists, nutrition experts, politicians, and ordinary people living on food stamps, all in order to take a deep look at the struggles low-income Americans face every day while trying to put three-square meals on the table.

Can't hit the streets : Occupy the Boardroom

Occupy the Boardroom: 9 Angry, Heart-Breaking Messages to Wall Street's Elites From the 99%

That photograph of well-heeled traders sipping champagne on a balcony high over Zuccotti Park as they look down on the Occupation below is already an iconic image, capturing the haughty detachment with which Big Finance has received this rapidly spreading expression of popular outrage.

The movement is now using a variety of strategies to take its message directly to the "1 percent" - to make sure they can't ignore the protests from the comfort of their sheltered enclaves. A new effort, Occupy the Boardroom, offers those whose economic security has been crushed by the recession a chance to send messages directly to a banking executive of their choice.

The Class War Has Begun

And the very classlessness of our society makes the conflict more volatile, not less.

   By Frank Rich

During the death throes of Herbert Hoover's presidency in June 1932, desperate bands of men traveled to Washington and set up camp within view of the Capitol. The first contingent journeyed all the way from Portland, Oregon, but others soon converged from all over-alone, in groups, with families-until their main Hooverville on the Anacostia River's fetid mudflats swelled to a population as high as 20,000. The men, World War I veterans who could not find jobs, became known as the Bonus Army-for the modest government bonus they were owed for their service. Under a law passed in 1924, they had been awarded roughly $1,000 each, to be collected in 1945 or at death, whichever came first. But they didn't want to wait any longer for their pre-New Deal entitlement-especially given that Congress had bailed out big business with the creation of a Reconstruction Finance Corporation earlier in its session. Father Charles Coughlin, the populist "Radio Priest" who became a phenomenon for railing against "greedy bankers and financiers," framed Washington's double standard this way: "If the government can pay $2 billion to the bankers and the railroads, why cannot it pay the $2 billion to the soldiers?"

Texas 'is just a giant ATM' for 2012 presidential candidates

Texans have some mighty deep pockets for the 2012 presidential race. They have sent more than $16.2 million to presidential candidates this year, including President Barack Obama, Gov. Rick Perry and more than a half-dozen other GOP challengers ranging from Mitt Romney to Ron Paul.

Who's Fueling Rick Perry's Presidential Campaign?

As he seeks the Republican nomination for president, Rick Perry is leaning heavily on his home state of Texas and his connections to the energy sector to bankroll his campaign, according to research by the Center for Responsive Politics. About 57 percent of the money Perry has raised through the end of September for his presidential campaign has come from residents of Texas -- a total of $9.7 million out of the $17.2 million Perry has raised. Meanwhile, Perry has raised the most among all presidential candidates from the energy sector. » Read More

First Texas Did Away With Last Meals for Prisoners; Now it's Axing Lunch on Weekends

Texas! The land where leaders break execution records, where potentially innocent men are put to death, and where death row inmates can't choose their last meal. Now, the state also has the distinction of denying its prisoners lunch on weekends. Really. The Times:
