The 10 Things Keith Olbermann Should Consider Next

From Fox News to ESPN to Commissioner of Major League Baseball, there are options

The abrupt departure of Keith Olbermann from MSNBC on Friday night will no doubt get sorted out in time. Pushed or quit? Yet more squabbling with management (which he tends to win)? Or perhaps a memo from Comcast? Olbermann is under contract - or was - so getting rid of him didn't come cheap. We can only hope whatever deal the two sides made did not include a gag order on Olbermann about said deal.

This is a man with things to say. And there are a lot of ears that want to hear those things. Even if (particularly if?) it has to do with this strange cutting of ties that has left - do not kid yourself on this point - MSNBC more irrelevant than ever before in its history.

But until that sorting out happens, here are 10 career path decisions that Olbermann should consider

On Anniversary of Citizens United Ruling, Common Cause Calls on Justice Dept. to Investigate Scalia and Thomas over Conflicts of Interest

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, that opened the floodgates for unlimited corporate spending on election campaigns. We speak with Bob Edgar, the president of Common Cause, which has filed a petition with the U.S. Department of Justice urging it to investigate whether Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas should have recused themselves from the case last year because of a conflict of interest. HAS AMERICA LOST ITS MARBLES?

  • Television sensation Glenn Beck warns of White House plots to institute fascism, communism, and other terrifying "isms."
  • Radio titan Rush Limbaugh charges that a racist Obama regime encourages black schoolchildren to beat up white kids.
  • Evangelical luminary James Dobson frets that Christians will be arrested for thought crimes and people will be allowed to marry donkeys.
  • Protesters in knickers and colonial-style hats march on Washington with signs that order Hitler-like caricatures of President Obama to return to Kenya.

As madness reigns, pundits, politicians, and cab drivers debate the source of the hysteria. Some blame ignorance; some blame racism; some blame the economy.

After poring over mountains of political screeds and heedlessly subjecting himself to countless hours of Fox News, author Michael Wolraich discovered the secret formula that turns ordinary men and women into fire-breathing, smoke-blowing, right wing maniacs. It's "persecution politics" . . again.

Progressive Profiles: With New TV Show, Radio Talker Thom Hartmann Brings Substance to Style

This is the first in a series of profiles of leading progressives in Washington, D.C.

It's 9pm in the middle of a busy week and Thom Hartmann, the nation's most popular progressive talk radio host, is just sitting down to dinner with his wife Louise at a crowded Washington restaurant.

As host of "The Thom Hartmann Program" (heard on 120 affiliates, according to the show's Web site), Thom did his customary three hours of radio earlier in the day, and just wrapped up an episode of his hour-long daily cable television program, "The Big Picture," which airs on RTTV and was just picked up by Free Speech TV, which runs the show over the Dish and DirecTV networks. (It's also available from iTunes in podcast form.) It's a typical 14-hour day for Hartmann, but he's hardly worse for the wear. At 59, he looks at least 10 years younger, and his energy is still bubbling over. Louise, just back from a day at the hospital with a friend who rushed there in an emergency, begs off the interview, wanting nothing more than a quiet meal after a stressful day.

10 Most (and 10 Least) Tolerant States in America

For each state we considered the number of hate crimes according to the FBI, the extent of hate-crime statutes, the number of complaints of discrimination filed through the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, the extent of fair-housing and fair-workplace laws, the percentage of residents that support same-sex marriage, the extent of legal rights for same-sex couples, and the percentage of residents that are accepting of various religions. Each state was given a score out of 100 points. Ties were broken based on hate-crime statistics--if the total points matched, the state with fewer hate crimes in the last year ranked higher.

The Competition Myth

By PAUL KRUGMAN

Meet the new buzzword, same as the old buzzword. In advance of the State of the Union, President Obama has telegraphed his main theme: competitiveness. The President's Economic Recovery Advisory Board has been renamed the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. And in his Saturday radio address, the president declared that "We can out-compete any other nation on Earth."

This may be smart politics. Arguably, Mr. Obama has enlisted an old cliché on behalf of a good cause, as a way to sell a much-needed increase in public investment to a public thoroughly indoctrinated in the view that government spending is a bad thing.

Article Headline

Adele M. Stan, AlterNet: "Hartmann is a true believer in the power of media to convert the skeptic to the progressive point of view, and his radio guests are mostly conservatives, whom he debates with gusto, armed with an historian's knowledge of America's distant and recent past.... Indeed, 'The Thom Hartmann Program' is an unusual mix of substantial subject matter with the high energy and on-air calls from listeners that define the tried-and-true talk radio format."

With host: Len Ellis

Welcome to Peace Begins With Me, a monthly dialogue to promote peace through personal responsibility. News Flash!! We live in a society, in a culture, in a world surrounded by violence. Like a drop of water in the ocean, violence is so prevalent, so much a part of our daily lives, we many times don't even recognize it or are aware of it. Hence the impetus for this program, to raise our awareness of violence, and provide ways to deal with conflict and violence in our lives. From language to abuse to fighting and to the ultimate expression of violence - war - we always have choices of how we are going to deal with not only our fellow human beings, but with all of life.

We may wish that it was easy, that some day our leaders will simply proclaim "peace" and that would be the end of violence. But our leaders are a reflection of our consciousness, they represent and manifest all our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Until each of us can be at peace, to act in a nonviolent way, we are part of this culture of violence. The challenge is to create, then grow, a culture of peace.

And where are our leaders going to learn the skills required to model peace? To promote peace? I guarantee you that at the stroke of midnight some hand will not be waived and all of a sudden every leader on this planet will know how to live a nonviolent life - not gonna' happen!

What: Masterful tale of how an oil refinery ticks

When: Saturday, January 22, 2011 1:00 PM

Where: REI /4515 LBJ Fwy /Dallas, TX 75244 /972-490-5989

Masterful tale of how an oil refinery ticks - 13 DAYS: THE PYTHAGORAS CONSPIRACY

Now is your chance to hear how oil refineries really work from an oil company executive who has written a masterful thriller detailing the way a refinery ticks without boring the reader or introducing too much technical jargon. And while the retorting of crude oil is part of the story, the characters and their human relationships are what make this book so readable and interesting. It reads like books by Michael Crichton, Tom Clancy, and John Grisham.

The author, L. A. Starks, http://lastarksbooks.com/, earned a chemical engineering bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, from New Orleans' Tulane University. This was followed by a finance MBA from the University of Chicago. She worked more than a decade for well-known oil companies in engineering, marketing, and finance from refineries to corporate offices which prepared her to write 13 DAYS: THE PYTHAGORAS CONSPIRACY (Brown Books Publishing Group, 2006) about a plot to sabotage oil refineries and the woman who must discover and stop it.

Ms. Starks donates a percentage of 13 DAYS' revenues to a New Orleans rebuilding fund.

Let's make this 'Progressive book of the week' ! You can purchase the book here

No One Listened to Gabrielle Giffords

By FRANK RICH NY Times

OF the many truths in President Obama's powerful Tucson speech, none was more indisputable than his statement that no one can know what is in a killer's mind. So why have we spent so much time debating exactly that?

Barry Blitt

The answer is classic American denial. It was easier to endlessly parse Jared Lee Loughner's lunatic library - did he favor "The Communist Manifesto" or Ayn Rand? - than confront the larger and harsher snapshot of our current landscape that emerged after his massacre. A week on, that denial is becoming even more entrenched. As soon as the president left the podium Wednesday night, we started shifting into our familiar spin-dry post-tragedy cycle of the modern era - speedy "closure," followed by a return to business as usual, followed by national amnesia.

It's All About Priorities

ACLU and Texas Legislature

The 82nd Legislature

The following 140 days will be pivotal for legislators and their priorities. And it will be for us, too.

You already know immigration - one of our strategic campaigns - will be a contentious issue, and we will be there fighting to ensure the rights of all Texas residents. But we have more on our plate. Here is a quick rundown of some of the ACLU of Texas' legislative priorities for this session.

For a full list of what we're working on during this session, be sure to download the 2011 ACLU of Texas Bill Book (PDF), copies of which will soon be in the hands of every single state representative and senator.

EDUCATION

The ACLU of Texas' Focus on Learning in Texas Classrooms campaign shapes our legislative agenda on education. We will support reforms to end the so-called school-to-prison-pipeline, which too often funnels schoolchildren away from the classroom and into the criminal justice system.

VOTING RIGHTS

We will push for higher standards for certification of electronic voting machines and require a paper trail. We will also seek to address problems with provisional ballots, and we will support voter education programs.

As you can see, we have work to do, work for which we need your help. Please take a moment to forward this email to a friend and encourage them to sign up to receive more legislative alerts like these by subscribing to ACLU of Texas e-alerts.

Tom DeLay Sentenced to Three Years in Prison

While DeLay heads to jail, his legacy of arrogant and ruthless partisanship thrives

Tom DeLay was sentenced to three years in prison for his role in an illegal scheme to launder almost $200,000 in corporate campaign donations. A Texas Judge sentenced DeLay to three years in prison on charges of conspiracy to launder money. He was sentenced to an additional five years in prison on the charge of illegally laundering money, but that sentenced was reduced to ten years on probation.  (Source: Austin American-Statesman, January 10, 2011)
