Closure Of Private Prison Forces Texas County To Plug Financial Gap

The Willacy County Correctional Center is empty now. The tall security fences and dome-like housing units set out on the coastal prairie have no one inside them.

One morning late last month, the prisoners rioted. They set fires and tore the place up. Guards put down the uprising in about five hours. But the destruction was so severe that the sprawling detention compound has been shut down. All 2,800 inmates were transferred.

'Strange Cult Causing Concern': Scientology came to Dallas in 1956. Then, the questions.

Sunday at 7 p.m. Dallas time HBO will air Academy Award-winning director Alex Gibney's Going Clear, his Scientology documentary based on the book by Woodrow Wilson High School Hall of Famer Lawrence Wright, who's chief among the talking heads talking the longest and loudest in the film. Maybe you've read the book; really, you should. Or maybe you played along last year, when it was our summer-reading selection. Or, maybe, everything you know about Scientology comes from Tom Cruise. Or perhaps you just drove by the old Celebrity Centre in East Dallas that one time.

Dallas UNA to host President of U.S. Institute of Peace April 1

Lindborg flyerJoin us on April 1 for a special event with the president of the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), Nancy Lindborg, who will talk about the challenges and importance of peacebuilding in today's world. Having recently returned from a trip to USIP programs in Afghanistan and Pakistan, she will share an on-the-ground perspective, as well as a broader vision of the ways in which conflict management is essential to current U.S. foreign policy priorities. Ms. Lindborg was sworn in as USIP's fifth president in February 2015, having spent her career working on issues of transition, democracy and civil society, conflict and humanitarian response, most recently as the assistant administrator of the Bureau for Democracy, Conflict and Humanitarian Assistance at the Agency for International Development. She served as president of Mercy Corps, which she spent 14 years helping to build into a globally respected organization known for innovative programs in the most challenging environments.

Imaginary Health Care Horrors

by Paul Krugman

There's a lot of fuzzy math in American politics, but Representative Pete Sessions of Texas, the chairman of the House Rules Committee, recently set a new standard when he declared the cost of Obamacare "unconscionable." But his calculation was a bit off - namely, by a factor of more than a thousand. The actual cost per newly insured American is about $4,000.
