The Takeaway: Texas' Lax Civil Forfeiture Laws Make It Easy for Cops to Take Your Stuff

Yiliana Perez was midway through her shift at the Southwestern Women's Surgery Center when her boyfriend showed up. It was a surprise visit. He had dropped her off at the Greenville Avenue abortion clinic, where she works as a medical assistant, at 6:45 that morning, and he wasn't scheduled to pick her up until mid-afternoon. Yet, just before noon, here he was hurrying into the lobby, saying they needed to talk.

Editorial: Our right to photograph police

State Rep. Jason Villalba has produced a solution in search of a problem with a bill designed to make policing easier while reducing public accountability and transparency. The Dallas Republican's bill, HB 2918, would restrict public "filming, recording, photographing or documenting" within 25 feet of police officers doing their work.

A Texas-Size Super PAC Swindle

By the time consultants were done with the oil dynasty head who started his own super PAC to turn the Senate red, the $3 million war chest was drained and fraud allegations were flying.

Throughout the booms and busts of his Fort Worth oil empire and during his brother's notorious murder trial, Kenneth W. Davis Jr. largely kept to himself. At 89, he still does. read on

Dallas High School students help with free tax help

Let Woodrow students do your taxes for free!

Need help with your 1040EZ or 1040 tax forms? Specific students at Woodrow Wilson High School have been certified IRS approved agents and can complete and electronically file IRS tax returns free of charge through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program; only three schools in Texas can say this. As the April 15th tax deadline is fast approaching, the students will set appointments to complete the 1040EZ and 1040 tax forms of taxpayers who sign up for filing assistance.

Call Denise Tucker, directory of Woodrow's National Academy of Finance, at (972)-502-4400 to schedule tax preparation services.

Trillion Dollar Fraudsters

Paul Krugman

Trillion Dollar Fraudsters

Paul Krugman

By now it's a Republican Party tradition: Every year the party produces a budget that allegedly slashes deficits, but which turns out to contain a trillion-dollar "magic asterisk" - a line that promises huge spending cuts and/or revenue increases, but without explaining where the money is supposed to come from.

DCDP Annual Johnson Jordan Dinner Dinner
April 22

Each year the Johnson Jordan Dinner (formerly known as the Jefferson Jackson Dinner) honors the elected officials of Dallas County, including our civil, family, probate and criminal judges, county officials and administrators, and officials who represent the Dallas area on the state and federal level. 2015's Johnson Jordan Dinner will be one of the year's premiere political events, attracting hundreds of citizens, attorneys, professionals, elected officials and members of the judiciary.

The 2015 Johnson Jordan Dinner features a keynote address from Eugene Robinson, a renowned political analyst and journalist whose columns appear in The Washington Post.

Robinson was awarded the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in recognition of his columns that focused on then-Senator Barack Obama in the context of his first Presidential campaign. Robinson appears frequently as a political analyst on MSNBC cable-TV network's programs such as Morning Joe, PoliticsNation with Al Sharpton, The Rachel Maddow Show, The Ed Show, Hardball with Chris Matthews, and Countdown with Keith Olbermann. In addition, he is often a panelist on NBC's public affairs program Meet the Press.

Labor Works to Save Jobs from Outsourcing

Herb Keener of Communications Workers Local 6215 updated the Central Labor Council on our efforts to stop the government and corporate lobbyists from making the Trans Pacific Partnership part of U.S. law. We also oppose any "fast track" undemocratic bill that would let the TPP slide through Congress with little debate, no amendments, and a fast "up or down" vote before anybody even knows what's in it.

Keener told the union reps that advocates for the TPP are lying when they say that labor is divided on the issue. Actually, Keener revealed, every union is totally opposed to it. Like the other so-called "free trade agreements," the TPP supporters promise that it will help American workers, but they were lying all the other times and there's no reason to expect that the TPP will be any different.

Working people across America are writing letters and calling Congresspersons to oppose the TPP. Keener said the Congressional Switchboard number is 202-224-3121. When you get them, ask for your member of Congress and they will transfer. The Council agreed to adopt Thursdays as our special day to make calls.

President Kym Grant of the Dallas AFL-CIO will lead other progressive organizations in publicly protesting the budget proposal at 2 PM Friday, March 27, at the Social Security office at 2530 Malcolm X Blvd in Dallas. Other speakers include John Fullinwider of the Dallas Peace Center, Rosemarie Rieger of North Texas Jobs with Justice, Juanita Wallace of the NAACP, and Gene Lantz of the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans. Everyone is invited.
