Hundreds march at Dallas bridge to honor Selma, highlight modern civil rights struggles

Half a century after a historic march in Selma, Ala., for voting rights, local activists say there's still work to be done.

"It's not like there's no longer a need for a civil rights movement," Dallas resident Sandy Rollins said

Obama's Veto of Keystone XL Bittersweet for Texans Forced to Allow the Pipeline on Their Land

As expected, President Obama vetoed the Republican bill attempting to allow TransCanada to finish constructing the Keystone XL tar sands export pipeline. While the veto received praise from environmentalists, along with encouragement to reject the pipeline entirely, the veto provides little consolation to those in Texas who already have the southern route of the pipeline moving Canadian tar sands under their land.

The Environment at the State Capitol

Zac Trahan, Program Director for Texas Campaign for the Environment, will lead an interactive discussion about potential environmental bills during the 2015 Texas Legislative Session. It has always been difficult to pass good environmental legislation at the State Capitol, but this year is shaping up to be the toughest challenge yet. Sierra Club is working with groups like Texas Campaign for the Environment and many others to pass the best bills possible and to defeat negative environmental bills that would result in more pollution, not less.

Since the City of Denton Banned Fracking, Texas GOP Moves to Pre-empt Local Control

Candice Bernd, Truthout: Texas lawmakers have introduced bills aimed at gutting municipalities' regulatory authority as a reaction to the city of Denton's ban on fracking. But citizens are fighting what has become a larger Republican strategy of pre-emption of local power across the nation.

Pepperoni Turns Partisan

Paul Krugman

If you want to know what a political party really stands for, follow the money. Pundits and the public are often deceived; remember when George W. Bush was a moderate, and Chris Christie a reasonable guy who could reach out to Democrats? Major donors, however, generally have a very good idea of what they are buying, so tracking their spending tells you a lot.

Lynching and Memory in Dallas, Texas

Embrey Human Rights Program and others launch the online exhibit project Dallas Untold: Lynching and Memory in Dallas, Texas. This project was created by Dr. Christopher J. Dowdy.

As the exhibit explains: "On March 3, 1910, a crowd of approximately 5,000 people lynched an African-American man in broad daylight in an intersection in the heart of downtown Dallas. His body was hung on the Elks Arch, a decorative structure that welcomed visitors to the city. Within a year, the arch was gone. Why? What does this disappearance teach us about the shape of violence and racism in Dallas? Dallas Untold is an online exhibit that draws from multiple archives in Dallas, bringing photographs, documents, and other primary sources together to enrich the conversation about the meaning of this absence."

5-time-married Texas lawmaker scrawls complaint against judge who allowed same-sex marriage

Texas lawmaker, currently in his fifth marriage, has submitted a hand-written complaint against a Texas judge - the wrong judge as it turns out - over a recent ruling allowing two women to get married after 30 years.

In an op-ed, in the Star-Telegram, Bud Kennedy explains that recently elected Texas House Rep. Tony Tinderholt's complaint against District Judge David Wahlberg is not only misdirected, but may not have a legal foot to stand on.
