70 Years On, Crowd Gets Close to the Birthplace of the Atomic Bomb - NYT |
**our own NTX State Representative and local activist Lon Burnam is interviewed WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, N.M. - The stretch of New Mexico desert would seem endless if not for the mountain range looming high in the distance. It is the kind of place where drivers keep an extra close watch on their fuel gauge, and the closest neighbors are small towns, tiny specks of civilization, dozens of miles away. Yet on Saturday morning, the two-lane road winding toward the White Sands Missile Range was clogged with minivans, cars and motorcycles, a snake of vehicles stretching for miles, inching its way through a checkpoint. Decades ago, the remoteness of this area in south-central New Mexico attracted scientists looking to test the most destructive weapon mankind had ever created, sending up a radioactive cloud that blistered the sky. Trinity Site, as it became known, was where the first atomic bomb was detonated in 1945, just weeks before two atomic bombs were unleashed on Japan, effectively ending World War II. Read on

Dallas watch groups, council members fume at lack of crime data |
For the last 11 years, Dallas police have relied heavily on crime watch and community leaders to help maintain what they say is an unprecedented period of crime reduction. But that strong relationship may be in jeopardy, some of those leaders believe, because of changes last year to a new records system that crime watch officials say has knocked the legs out from under them. They say the new system has taken away what they need most: details about crimes where they live. Read on |
Dallas Peace Center's Civil Rights Committee is committed to protest Texas executions April 9 Action Dallas |
Texas has found a new drug dealer: Four executions scheduled in April In early March this year the Texas Department of Criminal Justice revealed it only had enough lethal injection drug pentobarbital on hand to carry out two scheduled executions. But by the end of the month prison officials reported they had acquired enough of the drug to carry out all four executions set for April 2015. Some drug habits apparently are just too hard to kick. According to former appellate judge, Gerald Heaney, " Imposition of the death penalty is arbitrary and capricious. Decision of who will live and who will die for his crime depends less on the nature of the offense and the incorrigibility of the offender and more on inappropriate and indefensible considerations: the political and personal inclinations of prosecutors, the wealth, race and intellect of the defendant, the race or economic status of the victim, the quality of the defendants counsel, and the resources allocated to defense lawyers". The Dallas Peace Center's Civil Rights Committee is committed to protest Texas executions! When: 5:30 PM Thurs April 9, Wed April 15, Thurs April 23, Tue April 28 Where: Mockingbird Bridge at Central Expwy. https://www.facebook.com/pages/End-Texas-Executions/739995772783742 |

Join us Wednesday, April 8 at 7PM at 1408 N Washington Ave, Dallas. "MAPB formed to unite mothers who have lost their children to police violence. Every year families lose children and other loved ones to police killings. An alarmingly disproportionate number of African American and Hispanic men killed by policemen are unarmed. In virtually every case, officers that kill unarmed Black and Brown men are never charged with a crime." | Power and Paychecks Paul Krugman | On Wednesday, McDonald's - which has been facing demonstrations denouncing its low wages - announced that it would give workers a raise. The pay increase won't, in itself, be a very big deal: the new wage floor is just $1 above the local minimum wage, and even that policy only applies to outlets McDonald's owns directly, not the many outlets owned by people who bought franchises. But it's at least possible that this latest announcement, like Walmart's much bigger pay-raise announcement a couple of months ago, is a harbinger of an important change in U.S. labor relations. Maybe it's not that hard to give American workers a raise, after all. read on | |
Magnolia at the Modern: Film Screening - 'The Merchants of Doubt' - Fort Worth | Magnolia at the Modern: Film Screening - 'The Merchants of Doubt' - Fort Worth Fri, 04/03/2015 (Ongoing) - Sun, 04/05/2015 (Ongoing) Magnolia at the Modern 3200 Darnell Street Ft Worth, TX
Inspired by the acclaimed book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway, Merchants of Doubt takes audiences on a satirically comedic, yet illuminating ride into the heart of American spin. Filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the curtain on a secretive group of highly charismatic, silver-tongued pundits-for-hire who present themselves in the media as scientific authorities - yet have the contrary aim of spreading maximum confusion about well-studied public threats ranging from toxic chemicals to global warming. pharmaceuticals to climate change.

Dallas Police Training | Dallas Reporters, Politicians Humiliate Themselves in Police Shooting Training The Dallas Police Association would like it known that you, the civilian outraged by recent police shootings and/or the proposal to legislate where someone can stand to film cops, are wrong. Policing, they want to make clear, is a tough job occupied by human beings who must make split-second, life-and-death decisions, increasingly while being shadowed by some camera-toting asshole bent on YouTube stardom. more >> read on

Texas RFRA bill | Did you know that Texas lawmakers are right now pushing "religious freedom" proposals that are far more radical than what Indiana just passed? The rest of the country is just now waking up to these reckless laws, but they're not new to the Texas Freedom Network. I've stood in a hearing room at the Texas Capitol in the last two legislative sessions, lobbying against these same license-to-discriminate laws. More info here

Nuclear Savage screening | Adam Jonas Horowitz shot his first film in the Marshall Islands in 1986, and was shocked by what he found there, in this former American military colony in middle of the Pacific Ocean. Radioactive coconuts, leaking nuclear waste repositories, and densely populated slums were all the direct result of 67 Cold War U.S. nuclear bomb tests that vaporized islands and devastated entire populations Tuesday April 7 @ 7pm Unitarian Universalist Church of Oak Cliff 3839 W. Kiest Blvd Dallas TX. 75233 FREE to attend. Community Discussion (usually intense)will follow.
