...bringing North Texas news and discussion since 2004

April 13,  2015

Dear nancy,

Good Afternoon!

We're off ! Guess the 2016 campaign started today!

Tons of important direct action events happening in Dallas this week - go to any you can! Also plan on attending some of the wonderful Democratic club events that NEED your support, the events are all organized in the calendar below!

Be looking for a Spring Fundraiser kick-off email later this week. This newsletter needs your help, we've delivered a free weekly progressive newsletter for 9 years and over 520 newsletters. The only way we can afford to keep doing this is the bi-annual fundraisers. The cost of sending this newsletter rises and rises but I've not found a more secure, easy for subscribers to change subscription email product than Constant Contact-- but it ain't cheap and the more subscribers we have the more expensive its gets ....

I need your help, so get your checkbook/ PayPal account ready and as always the prizes are AMAZING .

Thanks,
Nancy Cunningham

Major Texas corporations are making the case for #LGBT rights

Major Texas corporations are making the case for #LGBT rights

With more than 20 anti-LGBT bills pending in the Texas Legislature, a coalition of major employers in the state - including Dell, Samsung and Southwest Airlines - is making the business case for fair treatment of gay, bisexual and transgender people.

More than 50 businesses have joined the coalition, called Texas Competes, by signing a pledge saying LGBT inclusion is essential to maintaining the Texas brand, attracting top talent and new companies to the state, and supporting a healthy tourism industry.

It pays to save energy. You can get a number of rebates, credits and other incentives by making energy-efficient upgrades to your home. This huge, interactive database lists all of them by state.

The government, and some utility companies, offer savings for certain energy upgrades. You might get a discount on CFL bulbs, for example. Or you might get a rebate for installing solar panels. It depends on where you live, and what's offered.

It Takes a Party

by

Paul Krugman

So Hillary Clinton is officially running, to nobody's surprise. And you know what's coming: endless attempts to psychoanalyze the candidate, endless attempts to read significance into what she says or doesn't say about President Obama, endless thumb-sucking about her "positioning" on this or that issue.

EBJ, VOTE 'NO!' ON FAST TRACK OF TPP

Outside Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson's office, 3102 Maple Avenue, Dallas, TX 75201

Rally with the North Texas Coalition of Progressive Activist Organizations and Unions urging U.S. Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX30) to "VOTE 'NO!' on FAST TRACK of Trans-Pacific 'Partnership'."

COME TELL REP. EDDIE BERNICE JOHNSON TO "VOTE 'NO!' ON FAST TRACK OF TPP!"

If the Trans-Pacific "Partnership" and other similar "trade" bills (TTIP, TISA...) are so great, why are they being kept secret, even from our elected representatives who must vote on them? And why/how can they be asked to vote "yes" or "no" on a huge treaty that they have not had access to see, read or amend?

REGULAR ORDER of business should and MUST be applied to this treaty. Shortcuts must NOT be taken. Our elected representatives and senators must save our freedoms/sovereignty from these corporate thieves. They MUST VOTE "NO!" ON FAST TRACK TPA, then do their job and demand to see the TPP draft.

SHARE..............AND ATTEND.

There is not a single other issue as important today.

Dallas Gas Drilling

HB 40, the bill to take away the right of a municipality to regulate oil and gas drilling is now in Calendars Committee. The good news is that it can literally stay there until the session runs out May 31st. The bad news is that it has been passed out of committee and can now be sent to the floor for a vote. We have 3 local Democrats on the Calendars Committee:

Rep. Roberto Alonzo--512-463-0408

Rep. Helen Giddings--512-463-0953

Rep. Eric Johnson-----512-463-0586

Please call today or tomorrow and express your strong opposition to this bill. Even if we are in the minority, opposition matters at this point as it can delay things. And now delay is in our favor as the clock is ticking. Just tell them that you hope they will vote to NOT send this bill to the House floor. Remind Rep. Alonzo that his sister, Monica Alonzo, on the Dallas City Council, voted for our Gas Drilling Ordinance 2 years ago.

There will be many more of these if HB 40 passes into law:

All About Bats

Kate Rugroden, Director of Special Projects for Bat World Sanctuary, brings The Essential Bat to the Dallas Sierra Club. This family friendly program features live native-species bats, and is an opportunity for people to see these tiny creatures up close. The program, based on her book, The Essential Bat, introduces the audience to these extraordinary creatures and the many ways in which they affect human life through lecture/discussion, artifacts, and live native-species bats. During the program, attendees are introduced to bats in the media, bats as cultural icons, and ways to help protect bat species. Special attention is given to White Nose Syndrome, a fungal disease that is devastating bat populations throughout the U.S. For more information about The Essential Bat or Bat World, please visit www.batworld.org.
