Donations to cover costs are welcome, but the admission to this event is free, as is our tradition. If you would like to help with setup beginning at 3:00 p.m. that afternoon, please email us at social@collindems.us. Additionally, Maury Marcus, one of our Precinct Chairs, urges folks to attend Sunset At Memorial Park at 7:00 p.m. tonight. He writes: "You will find the presentation and the statues by David Newton to be tearfully moving tributes to those who have given the last full measure. We will have a reading of the names of those from Plano whom we lost in the wars of the 20th and 21st centuries. I will be one of the readers, and I will be present as an AT&T Veteran. You can get more information at this address: http://PlanoSunsetMemorial.webs.com We, who live, must stand in awe of those who are gone, whose boots we are not fit to wash. And we must maintain a duality: speak well of the fallen, but never of war." _____________________ Feel to stop by Harrington Park Pavilion for a meal with us and some casual time before heading to the Memorial Day event at Sunset at Memorial Park. (It is advisable to take chairs to the 7:00 p.m. ceremony.) Come one and come all as we fellowship and have fun, while also remembering and honoring those that have sacrificed on our behalf! Texas 'Merry Christmas Bill' is 'a bunch of bullsh*t' says atheist TV host |
On Friday of last week, the Texas legislature passed the so-called "Merry Christmas Bill," a fusillade by conservative lawmakers in the "War on Christmas." The law is designed as a legal firewall to protect educators or other public officials who wish to openly celebrate Christmas in the state, but fear legal action from secular groups. Raw Story spoke with Russell Glasser, co-host of the Austin public-access TV show "The Atheist Experience," who said that the law is a way for Christian lawmakers to burrow further into their illusion of constant persecution and win the votes of "people who don't live in Austin." "There's a million idiotic little bills going through the Texas legislature all the time," Glasser said, which sometimes makes it hard to keep track of exactly what the state's Republican lawmakers are attempting to do. read on |

| The Obamacare Shock By PAUL KRUGMAN | The Affordable Care Act, a k a Obamacare, goes fully into effect at the beginning of next year, and predictions of disaster are being heard far and wide. There will be an administrative "train wreck," we're told; consumers will face a terrible shock. Republicans, one hears, are already counting on the law's troubles to give them a big electoral advantage. No doubt there will be problems, as there are with any large new government initiative, and in this case, we have the added complication that many Republican governors and legislators are doing all they can to sabotage reform. Yet important new evidence - especially from California, the law's most important test case - suggests that the real Obamacare shock will be one of unexpected success. read on

Memorial Day Message from Denton County Democrats | Cookouts, swimming, family, friends and tax-free shopping. That is what Memorial Day means for many Americans. But for families who's loved ones that served or are serving in the military, especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, it means much, much more. We honor those who have ensured our freedom by fighting on foreign lands, but let us not forget those who still fight and give their lives for freedom and equality right here at home. They are soldiers without uniforms and armor, but fight on at great personal expense, never the less. While great freedom leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King are honored with special holidays, the millions who carry on now to extend liberty and justice to all should be honored as well. From voter rights to immigration reform to marriage equality and everything in between, the fight goes on - whether you participate or not - someone is out there protecting your rights - right here at home. Enjoy your holiday this weekend. But as you do, stop and reflect on those who sacrifice - the brave men and woman who have fought and continue to fight for our freedom - both in wars abroad and at home in the United States of America. Happy Memorial Day! Phyllis Wolper - Chair
