Please support the NTX Progressive newsletter raffle and read the Pew research study on nonprofit news |
* Now this study isn't exactly about what this newsletter does - because we don't do investigations and journalism but we do inform WHEN NO other commercial "news" outlets are reporting. We reach thousands of NTXProgressives every week !
So who would have known about Bush Lie-bray protests, Monsanto protests and Walmart actions ? All were organized here and reported on afterwards just this year !
SO PLEASE support this newsletter that is delivered FREE - we do not hassle groups for money when they want to post their events-- we do it by fundraising a couple times a year and giving away FABULOUS books twice a year - what could be better help now ? $20 bucks buys a chance and keeps us working.
We have been doing this since 2004 -we are doing something right and filling a real need !
Raffle information here - do it now ! Thanks

Texas tea party leader in Dallas : GOP doesn't want black people to vote |
A tea party leader in Dallas is facing a backlash after saying the Republican Party doesn't want African-American voters to show up at the polls. "I'm going to be real honest with you," Tea Party leader Ken Emanuelson said at a Dallas County Republican Party event on May 20. "The Republican Party doesn't want black people to vote if they are going to vote 9-to-1 for Democrats." An audio recording of his comments were published online Tuesday by the pro-Democrat group Battleground Texas. read on |

Gov. Rick Perry and Tea Party have postponed debate in legislature to 2015, unless public pressure can change minds. Health care advocates and business groups, whose efforts failed to move Gov. Rick Perry and the Texas legislature to expand the state's Medicaid population under the Affordable Care Act, are digging in for a protracted struggle that might extend until 2015 or beyond.

Hon. Craig Watkins: Please Don't Seek The Death Penalty Anymore! |
The State of Texas is set to carry out execution #500 on June 26, 2013. Kimberly McCarthy is scheduled to receive a lethal injection. Please help put an end this barbaric and archaic form of "justice". A majority of Texans, when offered a choice between the death penalty and life in prison without possibility of parole, choose the latter. Help Texas join 18 American states and 140 countries worldwide that have abolished the death penalty! Please sign a petition that requests Dallas DA, the Honorable Craig Watkins, not to seek the death penalty anymore. We can abolish the death penalty in Texas one DA at a time! https://www.facebook.com/endTXdeathpenalty?fref=ts sign here http://www.change.org/petitions/hon-craig-watkins-don-t-seek-the-death-penalty-anymore |
How Section 5 blocked a GOP power grab in Texas | In 2008, Wendy Davis, a city councilmember in Fort Worth, Texas, narrowly defeated a 20-term incumbent to win a state Senate seat. Davis, a Democrat, enjoyed strong support from her district's black and Hispanic voters, who had largely been ignored by her Republican predecessor, and once in office she set about fighting for those who she felt lacked a voice. She worked to kick-start economic growth in poor neighborhoods, pushed for increased public-school funding, and cracked down on predatory lending practices targeting the poor. When Fort Worth kids were forced to crawl under idling trains to get to school, Davis won funding to fix the problem. read on

Texas prohibits nearly 70 percent of its counties from having a fire code |
Texas prohibits nearly 70 percent of its counties from having a fire code Victoria County, a little slice of the Texas chemical coast, has nearly 39 million pounds of concoctions that can poison and nearly 11 million pounds that can catch fire. "A potential for a catastrophic event" is how one federal agency described the risk if they leak. A temptation for terrorists, added another. But Victoria County cannot use a firefighter's basic tool for preventing industrial disaster: a fire code. read on |

| The Big Shrug by Paul Krugman NYTimes |
I've been in this economics business for a while. In fact, I've been in it so long I still remember what people considered normal in those long-ago days before the financial crisis. Normal, back then, meant an economy adding a million or more jobs each year, enough to keep up with the growth in the working-age population. Normal meant an unemployment rate not much above 5 percent, except for brief recessions. And while there was always some unemployment, normal meant very few people out of work for extended periods.

5 Myths About Military Sexual Assault |
On Tuesday the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Judge Advocate Generals of the Armed Forces testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee on various proposals to combat sexual assault in the military. Testimony was offered in the wake of the release of the Defense Department's annual report showing that despite the military's efforts to ramp up sexual assault prevention programs in recent years, rates of sexual assault in the military climbed by 34 percent between 2010 and 2012. A total of 26,000 service members are estimated to have experienced unwanted sexual contact in 2012 compared to 19,300 in 2010. Moreover, less than 3 out of every 100 estimated sexual assaults in the military in 2012 were ever prosecuted-a shockingly low percentage that has shown no sign of improvement.

Did Your Senator Vote to Expand the Government's Spying Power ? | Passed in the wake of Sept. 11, the PATRIOT Act received only one dissenting vote but has since become one of the most controversial bills in recent history. It is the legal basis for a government program exposed by the Guardian on Wednesday that collects the call records of Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint Nextel customers. Every time many Americans make a call, the "NSA gets a record of the location, the number called, the time of the call and the length of the conversation," according to the Wall Street Journal. The program relies specifically on Section 215, which allows the government to compel organizations to give up certain records, even if the records are about individuals who are not terror suspects. here |
