Texas Will Deny Health Coverage To 1.5 Million Low-Income Residents |
1.5 million low-income Texans may go without health care coverage after lawmakers in the state voted against expanding Medicaid using $100 billion in federal funds offered under President Obama's health care law. The decision comes almost a year after the Supreme Court ruled that the federal government cannot require states to enroll more Medicaid beneficiaries. read on |
Can Al Jazeera Save American News? |
It always seemed a little improbable that Arab sheiks could save American journalism. But in a business as troubled as the vast wasteland of American television news, hope springs eternal, and the Al Jazeera network out of Qatar seemed to offer an opulent oasis. In January, with great fanfare, it acquired the floundering Current TV network from Al Gore and his partners for some $500 million. Then it announced it would replace Current with a new Al Jazeera America network (in addition to its global Al Jazeera Arabic and Al Jazeera English networks), and hire about 800 people in the States. More than 22,000 applied. Headhunting for top executives goes on. read on |

Hon. Craig Watkins: Please Don't Seek The Death Penalty Anymore! The State of Texas is set to carry out execution # 500 on June 26 2013 when Kimberly McCarthy is scheduled to receive a lethal injection. Please help put an end to this barbaric and archaic form of justice. A majority of Texans, when offered a choice between the death penalty and life-in-prison -without-possibility-of -parole, choose the latter. Please help Texas join 18 American states and 140 countries worldwide that have abolished the death penalty! Please sign a petition that requests Dallas DA, the Honorable Craig Watkins not to seek the death penalty anymore. We can abolish the death penalty in Texas one DA at a time! http://www.change.org/petitions/hon-craig-watkins-don-t-seek-the-death-penalty-anymore From Hadi Jawad

| Dallas March against Monsanto May 25th |
Once again don't think just because you didn't see it on the news in Dallas that it didn't happen because it did!
Hundreds of folks marched to Dallas City Hall protesting Monstanto ! More photos here The Facebook group has over 8oo members get involved -save the bees !
Monsanto is a giant agriculture corporation which holds a monopoly over the production of geneticall modified wheat, corn and soy. GMOs or Genetically Modified Organisms are primarily untested but preliminary testing has shown that it causes leaky gut resulting in malnourishment, auto-immune disorders, and neurological disorders amongst a host of other illnesses. Most concerning to me is the link between the consumption of genetically modified wheat corn and soy by children or pregnant women with the development of autism and other neurological disorders in young children. The recent "Monstanto Protection Act" prevents courts from stopping the sale of their GMO patented seeds. Don't let monsanto control our food suply. Buy local, organic, and don't support brands which use genetically modified grains.

Texas Police Tase Overweight Asthmatic to Death in Drug Raid That Uncovers No Drugs |
On May 16th, Forth Worth police entered the home of Jarmaine Darden in search of cocaine. The raid, which does not appear to have uncovered any cocaine, ended with the 34-year-old father dead after he was tased multiple times by police. Family members told CBS 11 that the 350-pound man, who'd been asleep on the couch when police came in, couldn't drop to the ground on his stomach as officers commanded because he suffered from asthma

How Billionaire David Koch Shut Down A PBS Documentary That Offended Him |
Last fall, Alex Gibney, a documentary filmmaker who won an Academy Award in 2008 for an exposé of torture at a U.S. military base in Afghanistan, completed a film called Park Avenue: Money, Power and the American Dream. It was scheduled to air on PBS on November 12. The weekend before Park Avenue aired, Gibney said, it was clear that "something weird had happened." read on |

| The Geezers Are All Right by Paul Krugman NY Times | Last month the Congressional Budget Office released its much-anticipated projections for debt and deficits, and there were cries of lamentation from the deficit scolds who have had so much influence on our policy discourse. The problem, you see, was that the budget office numbers looked, well, O.K.: deficits are falling fast, and the ratio of debt to gross domestic product is projected to remain roughly stable over the next decade. Obviously it would be nice, eventually, to actually reduce debt. But if you've built your career around proclamations of imminent fiscal doom, this definitely wasn't the report you wanted to see. Still, we can always count on the baby boomers to deliver disaster, can't we? Doesn't the rising tide of retirees mean that Social Security and Medicare are doomed unless we radically change those programs now now now? Maybe not. read on | |
