Rachel Maddow seizes her moment |
You Were Expecting Olbermann? Rachel Maddow seizes her moment as the face of MSNBC at an uncomfortable crossroads. The woman at the whiteboard, in a brown hoodie, white T shirt, and jeans, scribbles away as the debate careens from John Boehner to abortion rights to Silvio Berlusconi's teenage gal pal. It is part graduate seminar, part stand-up comedy, as Rachel Maddow challenges the 17 mostly female staffers on every suggestion for that night's show. While Maddow strafes such favorite conservative targets as the billionaire Koch brothers ("They're doing a good job of marginalizing all criticism of them as hysterical"), her sharp tongue doesn't spare Democrats. She says that Hillary Clinton, during the Egyptian protests, "pulled a full Baghdad Bob: 'Pay no attention to that burning barricade behind me.'?" read on |

Democracy Now |
Public employees, labor activists and students have been filling the hallways of the Wisconsin State Capitol for the past 11 days. Hundreds have slept inside the Capitol building each night. So many people are staying here that protesters have begun building impromptu dining areas, a lending library and a medic center. Democracy Now! senior producer Mike Burke and John Hamilton receive a tour of the building from an activist who's stayed at the Capitol building for nine straight nights. Watch/Listen/Read A British judge ruled today that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange can be extradited to Sweden to face questioning on allegations of sexual crimes. We speak to constitutional law attorney and legal blogger Glenn Greenwald about the Assange case, allegations of torture by the U.S. Army to alleged whistleblower Army Private Bradley Manning, and a recently disclosed plot by three private intelligence firms to target WikiLeaks and its supporters, including Greenwald, who has publicly defended the organization. Matt Taibbi explains how the American people have been defrauded by Wall Street investors and how the financial crisis is connected to the situations in states such as Wisconsin and Ohio. | Texas Democratic Party launches new website, GOPpricetag.com |
Today, your Texas Democratic Party launched a new website, GOPpricetag.com, to provide Texans an honest picture of the painful local effects of the $27 billion budget hole Republicans have dug here in Texas. Republicans have controlled Texas state budget policy for at least a decade, but they've refused to take responsibility for their actions and act in the best interests of Texans, choosing instead to put politics ahead of sound public policy. Today, Texans are learning that GOP politics comes with a massive price tag, and Republicans are asking Texas families to foot the bill. On GOPpricetag.com, you'll find news stories and facts, as well as stories from real, everyday Texans, detailing the painful effects Republican neglect is having on families and communities. In every story, the message is clear - we can't afford the painful price of Republican politics. The stark reality you'll see on GOPpricetag.com may not be pretty, but unfortunately, it is true. And now, more than ever, it's critical that Texans know the exact cost we're being forced to pay for Republican politics. Please take a look at our new website. Then, join our effort to make Texans aware of what Republicans are doing to our state: |

| Why Wouldn't the Tea Party Shut It Down? By FRANK RICH NY Times |
NO one remembers anything in America, especially in Washington, so the history of the Great Government Shutdown of 1995 is being rewritten with impunity by Republicans flirting with a Great Government Shutdown of 2011. The bottom line of the revisionist spin is this: that 2011 is no 1995. Should the unthinkable occur on some coming budget D-Day - or perhaps when the deadline to raise the federal debt ceiling arrives this spring - the G.O.P. is cocksure that it can pin the debacle on the Democrats. read on | |

Read new post : Egypt and Black History Month February is Black History Month. For all black authors, there is some sort of unwritten rule that it is blasphemy not to comment on Black History in February. Well, I will not commit blasphemy this month. In many schools, history is taught as a bunch of isolated facts that are seldom related to reality. Students are forced to digest facts like... Read

Supporting the Protesters in Madison- how you can help! | Orders for pizza have been pouring in from around the globe to feed the folks in Madison who are protesting in support of workers' rights ... Ian's Pizza has suspended normal business to handle the volume of orders for pizza to be sent to demonstrators. There's more we can do. The UW Teaching Assistants' Association is helping inside the Capitol and they have a list of supplies they need. (They also have a paypal button, if you're so inclined.) The UW Teaching Assistants' Association also has a page listing other local businesses which have donated food and supplies. I have an especial fondness for co-ops, part of the great midwestern tradition of progressive grassroots action, so i would like to give a shout-out to the Willy Street Coop. I talked to a nice young man there (hi Dan!) and he said they are doing gift cards as well as food donations. I know if i were at the Capitol, as much as i love pizza, i'd sure love some fresh fruit & veggies, trail mix, etc. And coffee! Don't forget the coffee! Here's the list of local vendors from the UW Teaching Assistants' Association's website: Capital Centre Market (608) 255-2616 Cargo Coffee (608) 268-0597 Community Pharmacy (608) 251-3242 Fromagination (608) 255-2430 Himal Chuli (608) 251-9225 Ian's Pizza (608) 257-9248 Just Coffee (608) 204-9011 Ma Cha (608) 442-0500 Marigold Kitchen (608) 661-5559 Mermaid Cafe (608) 249-9719 Regent Street Market (608) 233-4329 Steep n' Brew (608) 256-2902 Underground Kitchen (608) 514-1516 Union Cab (608) 242-2000 Weary Traveler (608) 442-6207 Willy Street Coop (608) 251-6776 Zu Zu Cafe (608) 260-9898 Donations to protesters (coffee , pizza and water ) AFSCME Union donations http://www.defendwisconsin.org/

Report: Army deployed psy-ops against Franken, other senators | DFL Sen. Al Franken was one target of an illegal psychological warfare campaign led by a US Army unit in Afghanistan, according to a story published in the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine. The unit was assigned to Afghanistan to "assess the effects of U.S. propaganda on the Taliban." But they were soon ordered by Lt. Gen. William Caldwell, who's in charge of training Afghan troops, to use their expertise to influence visiting lawmakers and pressure them into providing more funding for the war effort. read on
