As Wisconsin Republicans passed Gov. Scott Walker's anti-union bill in the State Senate, a bill in Michigan goes even further. In the measure, emergency financial managers would be allowed to break union contracts, dismiss elected officials, and even disincorporate entire municipalities. Michigan Senate Republicans approved the bill yesterday, and protests are expected in the Lansing State Capitol building today. We speak to filmmaker Michael Moore. Watch/Listen/Read As a wave of anti-union bills are introduced across the country following the wake of Wall Street financial crisis, many analysts are picking up on the theory that award-winning journalist and author Naomi Klein first argued in her 2007 bestselling book, The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism. In the book, she reveals how those in power use times of crisis to push through undemocratic and extreme free market economic policies. Watch/Listen/Read |

The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education By Diane Ravitch List Price: $26.95 Price: $17.79 & eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping on orders over $25. BUY HERE
Diane Ravitch-former assistant secretary of education and a leader in the drive to create a national curriculum-examines her career in education reform and repudiates positions that she once staunchly advocated. Drawing on over forty years of research and experience, Ravitch critiques today's most popular ideas for restructuring schools, including privatization, standardized testing, punitive accountability, and the feckless multiplication of charter schools. She shows conclusively why the business model is not an appropriate way to improve schools. Using examples from major cities like New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Denver, and San Diego, Ravitch makes the case that public education today is in peril. |

| Get Up, Stand Up by Bob Moser Texas Observer |
Some liberals love nothing better than a good protest. I've never been one of them. Don't get me wrong: I've yelled against plenty of wars and sashayed through my share of Pride parades. I've protested executions and Ten Commandments monuments and international torture-training schools. But it's never been my idea of a rocking good time. I don't like holding signs with slogans any more than I like mouthing the lyrics to folk songs I'm supposed to have memorized, or responding in unison to the inevitable questions of seemingly every protest rally: "What do we want? ... When do we want it?" Somehow, that 1967-era protest shtick always leaves me feeling like we're never going to get what we want, no matter how much we chant for it. But there's a time to kvetch about style points, and there's this time. It's a time when Texas has a $27 billion budget deficit and a right-wing Legislature determined to balance the ledger by depleting schools and services. It's a moment when every Texan who believes in building a better future rather than a second-world society needs to be getting up and out and organized. It's a moment to stamp and holler and insist. To make the Tea Party's rallies look like polite, lightly attended little affairs. To stand up or be streamrolled. Read on |

Jim Hightower | The Corporate/GOP Attack on America's Middle Class |
Jim Hightower, Truthout: "The most revealing comments by politicians are rarely revealed. This is because they're made in unrecorded conversations, when politicos let their guard down. However, in a recent sting, blogger Ian Murphy recorded a revealing phone call he made to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. Murphy pretended to be David Koch, the far-right-wing billionaire who pumped more than a million dollars into Walker's election last year. The governor is very busy, but he spent 20 minutes regaling the fake David Koch with details of his effort to kill the collective bargaining rights of state workers." Read the Article |

| Confessions of a Recovering Op-Ed Columnist By FRANK RICH NY Times | THE first political columnist I ever encountered, after a fashion, was Walter Lippmann. It happened on a snowy afternoon when I was a kid of 11 or 12 growing up in Washington during the J.F.K. years. My wallet had somehow slipped out of my pocket as I trudged past the National Cathedral on my way home from school. Hours later, my mother barged into my bedroom, interrupting my full-scale sulk to announce a miracle. "I just got a call from Walter Lippmann's maid," she said, sounding more excited than the circumstances warranted. "They found your wallet on Woodley Road in front of Walter Lippmann's house!" read on | |
