Texas Democratic Women of Collin County "Pray the Devil back to Hell" |
Two exciting programs sponsored by Texas Democratic Women of Collin County: On Thursday, March 24, 6:30-9:00 p.m., at the Angelika Theater, Shops at Legacy in Plano there will be a screening of the highly acclaimed "Pray the Devil back to Hell," a gripping account of how Christian and Muslim women demanded peace for Liberia after decades of civil war. The women's historic yet unsung achievement are told in this gripping narrative directed by Abigail Disney. The story is proof that moral and non-violent resistance can succeed. Following the movie we will hear from Dr Sandra Spencer, Director of Women's Studies and Global Feminism, at UNT. Tickets for this event are available on the TDWCC website. The program for the regular TDWCC monthly meeting on Monday, March 28 will follow the theme of the movie. There will be a panel discussion on "Religion, Tolerance and Politics" featuring Imam Yaseen Shaikh from the Islamic Society of Collin County, Rev. Dr. David Bachelder from West Plano Presbyterian Church and Rabbi Jeremy A. Schneider from Temple Shalom in Dallas. Join us at 6:45 p.m. at Collin College - Frisco Campus, Rm. F148, Founders Hall. To RSVP for the movie and for ticket information, visit our website www.tdwcc.org. There is no cost to attend our regular meetings and all are welcome. |
Democracy Now |
Former presidential candidate and longtime consumer advocate and nuclear critic Ralph Nader strongly advocates phasing out nuclear power in the United States by calling for public hearings on the status of every single nuclear power plant. Watch/Listen/Read Earlier this week, U.S. State Department spokesperson P.J. Crowley resigned after describing the confinement of accused WikiLeaks whistleblower, Army Private Bradley Manning, as "ridiculous" and "stupid." Manning is being held in "maximum security confinement" at the U.S. Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia. We speak to Daniel Ellsberg, perhaps this country's most famous whistleblower and one of Manning's most public supporters. Watch/Listen/Read One day before the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan and sparked a nuclear crisis, the U.S. Nuclear Regulator Commission announced it would renew the license for Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant. Vermont state legislators had voted to close the plant when its license expires in 2012. The 38-year-old facility has had a series of radioactive tritium leaks and is almost identical to the troubled Fukushima Daiichi plant in Japan. Watch/Listen/Read |

Affordable Care Act Anniversary! |
One year ago this Wednesday, President Obama signed health insurance reform into law. It was a historic moment, more than 100 years in the making. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, children with pre-existing conditions can no longer be denied coverage, insurance companies can't drop your coverage if you become sick, and 32 million Americans will have access to affordable health insurance for the first time. The number of Americans personally benefiting from reform continues to grow -- and, this week, OFA is making sure we can all learn more about what this law does to help our families, friends, and neighbors. Volunteers will attend events around the country to mark the Affordable Care Act's anniversary -- and one of the events is in Dallas this Thursday, March 24th. Can you make it? Back to Our Future: How the 1980s Explain the World We Live in Now--Our Culture, Our Politics, Our Everything by David Sirota List Price: $25.00 Price: $13.15 & eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping on orders over $25. BUY HERE
Product Description Wall Street scandals. Fights over taxes. Racial resentments. A Lakers-Celtics championship. The Karate Kid topping the box-office charts. Bon Jovi touring the country. These words could describe our current moment-or the vaunted iconography of three decades past.
In this wide-ranging and wickedly entertaining book, New York Times bestselling journalist David Sirota takes readers on a rollicking DeLorean ride back in time to reveal how so many of our present-day conflicts are rooted in the larger-than-life pop culture of the 1980s-from the "Greed is good" ethos of Gordon Gekko (and Bernie Madoff) to the "Make my day" foreign policy of Ronald Reagan (and George W. Bush) to the "transcendence" of Cliff Huxtable (and Barack Obama). |

MSNBC's Newest Pit Bull : Lawrence O'Donnell |
Lawrence O'Donnell seems indifferent about his new career as a cable anchor. Howard Kurtz talks to him about his unlikely rise, why people hate him-and why O'Reilly can't get under his skin. Lawrence O'Donnell doesn't sound like he wants to be talking about himself or his prime-time cable show. In fact, he sounds rather indifferent about hosting a show at all. Appearing on cable "was a hobby of mine," the former Hollywood writer says in an interview. "It never occupied more than a few percent of my brain, except when I was doing it live. Screenwriting is my business; this thing was always a sideline." read on |

| The War on Warren By PAUL KRUGMAN NY Times |
Last week, at a House hearing on financial institutions and consumer credit, Republicans lined up to grill and attack Elizabeth Warren, the law professor and bankruptcy expert who is in charge of setting up the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Ostensibly, they believed that Ms. Warren had overstepped her legal authority by helping state attorneys general put together a proposed settlement with mortgage servicers, which are charged with a number of abuses.

Sierra Club - No nukes ! | Nuclear Power: Not the Answer
Our hearts go out to the people of Japan in this time of unspeakable tragedy and chaos. Still reeling in the aftermath of a massive quake and devastating tsunami, the Japanese now face a potential nightmare as they struggle to prevent meltdowns in their damaged nuclear reactors. The disaster has reignited the debate over nuclear power in America and around the world.
The Sierra Club has unequivocally opposed nuclear energy for more than three decades: Nukes are dirty, unsafe, deadly, and costly. Some in Washington, D.C., though, are still saying we should build more of them. Please tell your U.S. senators that a "nuclear revival" has no place in America's clean-energy future.
