| North Texas Job for Justice : Addressing Low-Wage Work |
Addressing Low-Wage Work Low-wage work is what is keeping millions of Americans on the brink of poverty or below. The majority of good middle-class jobs lost in the recent recession (2007) have come back as low-wage, part-time, temporary jobs, which are not family-sustaining. Many workers are being forced to turn to tax-payer subsidized programs to feed their children, while corporations like Walmart and others are making millions in profits and their CEOs are paid more than 1000x more than the average worker. Congressman Mark Veasey invites us to hear from industry experts, workers, business owners, academics on the need to raise the minimum wage. He is a proud co-sponsor of H.R. 1010, the Fair Minimum Wage Act, which calls for raising the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour. Monday, July 21, 2014 6 PM to 7:30 PM West Dallas Multipurpose Center2828 Fish Trap Rd, Dallas 75212 RSVP to Lorraine Birabil at 214-741-1387 or Lorraine.Birabil@mail.house.gov |

| The Fiscal Fizzle An Imaginary Budget and Debt Crisis by Paul Krugman | For much of the past five years readers of the political and economic news were left in little doubt that budget deficits and rising debt were the most important issue facing America. Serious people constantly issued dire warnings that the United States risked turning into another Greece any day now. President Obama appointed a special, bipartisan commission to propose solutions to the alleged fiscal crisis, and spent much of his first term trying to negotiate a Grand Bargain on the budget with Republicans. That bargain never happened, because Republicans refused to consider any deal that raised taxes. Nonetheless, debt and deficits have faded from the news. And there's a good reason for that disappearing act: The whole thing turns out to have been a false alarm. read on | |
One Man, One Bike, One Camera: Jose Vela's Dallas Cop Block Aims to Guard the Guardians | The first incident that set Jose Vela on the path to having front and rear dash cams installed in his car happened in 2009. He was visiting his old man in Alamo, and his 7-year-old son, who has Down syndrome, wandered off. Vela and his wife searched but couldn't find him. They called the police. Eventually, a resident discovered Vela's son and phoned it in. The family was reunited, but, Vela told Unfair Park, not until the police threatened to arrest him and his wife. Nothing came of it, but Vela learned to be wary of police officers.

Contribution Explorer Shows Who Is Contributing to Politicians | If you've ever wondered who contributed to your Congressional delegation, you could use public records to look it up. Brian Clifton has created a web site that will do all that looking up for you. After you put in a name, the web site lists the total contributions and breakdown by industry. It presents the information in an overview format, so it won't break down the individual or company contributions but it's good for a quick glance. Contribution Explorer pulls data from Open Secrets, which has more details, but Contribution Explorer is much easier to read. If all you want is a general sense of how much money a politician has raised and from what sources, check out the link. congressionalforecast.org |
