Breaking News: DOJ to Ask Court to Reinstate Voting Rights Act in Texas |
Holder cites "evidence of intentional racial discrimination" in Rick Perry's state. Attorney General Eric Holder announced on Thursday the first step the Justice Department will take to restore the voting rights gutted by a Supreme Court decision neutering a key prong of the Voting Rights Act. In remarks prepared for the National Urban League's annual conference, Holder announced that the Justice Department "will ask a federal court in Texas to subject the State of Texas to a preclearance regime similar to the one required by Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act" - effectively restoring the safeguards against voter suppression in Texas that were stripped by the five Republican justices' decision in Shelby County v. Holder. read on

| Hiroshima in History and Nuclear Weapons Today |
The U.S. dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, and the second on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. For decades, these dates have been adopted as times to pause to remember the victims, and also to remember that the threat posed by nuclear weapons remains with us. also are a time to reflect on the broader dangers created by the global spread of nuclear technology as a means to generate nuclear power. Despite the inherent risks of nuclear power generation, demonstrated decisively by the 2011 catastrophe at Fukushima, the immense global nuclear industry continues to push for new nuclear deals, always claiming that the next generation of nuclear power plants will be safe and affordable, despite a record of broken promises stretching back to the dawn of the atomic age. Eight nations acknowledge having nuclear weapons today: United States, Russia, United Kingdom, France, China, Pakistan, India, and North Korea. Israel is also known to possess nuclear weapons. South Africa once possessed nuclear weapons, but dismantled its stockpile after the end of apartheid. Iran is widely reported to be developing the capacity to build nuclear weapons. Albert Einstein once said, "The release of atom power has changed everything except our way of thinking." We need a new way to think about nuclear technology. The Dallas Peace Center is presenting two programs in August exploring the past and future of nuclear weapons and nuclear power: Saturday, August 3: Hiroshima Memorial Commemoration 1945-2013 Free and open to the public 1-3 p.m., at SGI-USA Buddhist Center 2600 N. Stemmons Fwy., Suite 190, Dallas 75207 (between the Inwood and Medical District Dr. exits) Original Japanese Dance, Incense Offering, and Reflections from Hiroshima Bomb Survivors Co-Sponsor: SGI-USA www.SGI-USA.org |
A New Study Says It's Harder to Get Ahead in Dallas than in Most of America |
The New York Times opens its sweeping, front-of-the-webpage piece on upward mobility in America with an anecdote about Stacey Calvin, a woman in Atlanta who spends hours each day on buses and trains commuting to and from her part-time job at a daycare center, barely making it home on time to greet her three children after school. That's a function, the Times' David Leonhardt writes, of "the economic geography of Atlanta." It's a thriving metropolis with a growing population and plenty of good jobs, but it's starkly divided by income. "The low-income neighborhoods here often stretch for miles, with rows of houses and low-slung apartments, interrupted by the occasional strip mall, and lacking much in the way of good-paying jobs." read on |

| Stranded by Sprawl By PAUL KRUGMAN NY Times | Stranded by Sprawl By PAUL KRUGMAN Detroit is a symbol of the old economy's decline. It's not just the derelict center; the metropolitan area as a whole lost population between 2000 and 2010, the worst performance among major cities. Atlanta, by contrast, epitomizes the rise of the Sun Belt; it gained more than a million people over the same period, roughly matching the performance of Dallas and Houston without the extra boost from oil. read on | |
